What Difference Does It Make: Jorge Perez Navarro loves the 80s Apr 24, 2021
    Show notes

Many of you know Jose Perez Navarro as the original anchor of Contacto Deportivo or as the play by play announcer for World Cup games since 2002. What you may not know, is his career started in radio back in his hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico. He is particularly passionate about music from the 80s which is why we happily invited Jorge Perez Navarro into our virtual What Difference Does It Make studios. The original idea was to talk about songs 30 to 21 from the 1984 year end chart from radio station KROQ in Los Angeles. We manage to do that but we mainly touch on Jorge's love of Air Supply, Elton John and music from the late, great Jim Steinman.

Love That Album 144: Jeff Apter on "Behind Dark Eyes: The True Story of Jon English" Apr 23, 2021
    Show notes

Growing up, before even becoming a fan of rock music, there was one name I knew very well – Jon English. He made a huge name for himself in the Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar as Judas – Tim Rice may have declared him the finest performer of the role.

Welcome to episode 144 of Love That Album

I welcome music writer and biographer Jeff Apter to the show. He's just had his latest book published, “Behind Dark Eyes: The True Story of Jon English”. We talk about Jon's career as song interpreter, songwriter, actor (on TV and stage), rockstar, composer, and family man. There are many musicians who go into acting (and vice versa) but few went into everything with the gung ho that Jon did. Did I mention he was also hugely funny?? I'm not referring to his appearances on All Together Now – anytime he was on a stage with the Foster Brothers or as an actor, he owned the audience with his humour as well as THAT singing voice.

Jeff has released what I believe is a terrific biography that is respectful and devoted without being enslaved to the subject. The exultation of success and the disappointment at having the work he prized the most largely ignored are covered. We had a great conversation about all aspects of Jon and his work. If you're a fan or you're new to him, I hope you get something out of this episode.

If you're looking for Jon's music on physical media, you can pick up his albums in multi cd packs labeled as Anthology. There's also a great comp called Six Ribbons – The Ultimate Collection.

If you prefer streaming, there's that option as well.

My huge thanks to Jeff for his time. You can order the book from https://www.booktopia.com.au/behind-dark-eyes-jeff-apter/book/9781925868463.html or if you're outside of Australia https://www.bookdepository.com/Behind-Dark-Eyes/9781925868463. You can check out Jeff's other work at http://jeffapter.com.au

The Hook Rocks New Music Spotlight: Tommi Holappa From Greenleaf Apr 23, 2021

The band is Greenleaf and the new album is Echoes From A Mass. The veteran groups latest is full of energy and melody with a darker lyrical tone. Guitarist Tommi Holappa explains how the outside reality affected their music but how they were able to keep the bands signature sounds. Like many bands, the creative process acted as a bubble from the outside world keeping bands connected to their craft. Please enjoy the episode!

Rock and Roll Heaven: Heavy Hitter - David Bowie Pt 5 Apr 22, 2021
    Show notes

Five Parts is not nearly enough to sum up the life and career of David Bowie. The man transcended music, making an impact in film, fashion, and the entire scope of entertainment. And yet, in this chapter, Bowie will have his greatest accomplishment... meeting the love of his love.

Celebrate David Bowie with us in this, the Final Chapter of the Bowie Saga. His status was undeniable and his untimely departure tragic. And yet, as Rosencrans and Guildenstern put it best, "Every exit is an entrance somewhere else."

This could not have been more appropriate for this groundbreaking artist. Thank you, David.
