Decibel Geek 446: Vinny Appice Remembers Holy Diver - Albums Unleashed May 04, 2021
    Show notes

Legendary drummer Vinny Appice joins us this week to examine the making of Dio's Holy Diver album. Coming off success with Black Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio was in a tough spot. While the band was in a good place professionally, interpersonal relationships were severely hampered. While in Sabbath, Dio was offered a solo record deal and decided to snap it up and bring drummer Vinny Appice with him. What resulted is an absolute masterpiece of metal music.

Holy Diver was released May 25, 1983 and immediately gained traction in a growing rock and metal scene. Powered by the singles 'Holy Diver' and 'Rainbow in the Dark,' the album is loaded with timeless songs. The rhythm section of Vinny Appice and Jimmy Bain combined with guitarist Vivian Campbell's soaring leads and Dio's majestic vocals produced an album that sounds as amazing today as it did upon its release.

In this discussion Vinny shares his memories of this album and era. From their split with Sabbath to the formation of the band to the recording of the album, you'll hear about it all. There are some great behind the scenes stories in this chat about the making of the album at the legendary Sound City Studios. Additionally, you'll get stories from Vinny about the songwriting and recording process for Holy Diver.

The chat wraps up with some other entertaining stories from this era including backward track recording, performing seances, and Ronnie's addiction to....video games. It's a great view into the making of a metal classic. We hope you enjoy Holy Diver - Albums Unleashed and SHARE with a friend!

Make It Stop: Jack White - Boarding House Reach May 03, 2021
    Show notes

We're reaching, and retching this week as we take a deep dive into Jack White's version of a musical midlife crisis, 2018's Boarding House Reach. Vocoder, hot topic spoken word poetry and RAPPING all make an appearance on this bloated collection of song stems, incoherent rambles, and riffless meandering sonic slogs that sound like the last gasps of a former musical genius. Most damning of all is the fact that more than half the songs aren't even songs at all - a far cry from the tight, furtive garage rock of Mr. White's heyday. It's sure to disappoint you as much as it did us, so reach around and hold on tight. It's bound to be a bumpy ride.

Performance Anxiety: Rob Marshall (Humanist, Mark Lanegan) May 01, 2021
    Show notes

I’ve mentioned this list I made early on of “unicorn” guests. Well today I get to check another one off the list. Rob Marshall is one of the most incredible people I’ve had on this show. He’s an amazing guitarist, but more importantly, he’s a great human. He began making walls of sound with Lyca Sleep & Exit Calm. When that period ended, he began writing for & with Mark Lanegan, culminating in the his project called Humanist. And that album is a masterpiece. If you haven’t heard it, stop this podcast and listen to it. Seriously. I get some great behind-the-scenes stories of how it all came together; like how the centerpiece of the album is a 9 minute improv with otherworldly vocals. Follow Rob @HUMANIST on social media. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Support us with a cup of coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. And now I’m truly honored to welcome Rob Marshall to Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.

Songfacts Podcast: "Whoomp! There It Is": DC Glenn of Tag Team Apr 30, 2021
    Show notes

DC Glenn is one half of the hip-hop group Tag Team, who wrote and recorded the smash hit, "Whoomp! There It Is," revived in a brilliant Geico commercial ("Scoop! There It Is") that exploded on social media.

You may not know that there was a competing song called "Whoot, There It Is" that was released first in 1993. In this episode, DC talks about that rivalry and explains what inspired "Whoomp!"

The song has become part of the soundtrack to our most joyous moments, and for DC, it's part of a bigger and sometimes complex story, especially the finances. So do as I did: Sit back and enjoy DC Glenn as he tells the ongoing tale of one of hip-hop and pop culture's most recognizable tunes.
