Imbalanced History: Genesis To Exodus: The Gabriel Era Oct 10, 2022
    Show notes

Artists making music without rules or limits set the tone for the advent of the Progressive Rock era!

Genesis didn't set the world on fire at the start (not unlike other progressive pioneers), but their influence grew and changed through their early phase, even after Peter's solo departure. Like some of their contemporaries, the lineup that made the band's mark isn't the one they start out with.

The Imbalanced Boys dig into that aspect, among other things related to the days from inception through Peter Gabriel's answering of his solo calling. Hopefully it will inform newer fans of this band, and set the table for what's next in their amazing history.

No Filler: Rewind: Dark and Dazey - The Music of Cock & Swan Oct 10, 2022
    Show notes

Following last week's episode on Bowery Electric, we pull from the No Filler vaults with our episode on Seattle shoegaze group Cock & Swan. They pick up where Bowery left off with a similar blend of shoegaze and downtempo. Johnny Goss and Ola Hungerford have a knack for creating these wonderfully dark & dazey, lusciously lo-fi tunes, often with jerky, slightly odd rhythms.

Prisoners of Rock and Roll: Listen Up Y'All, It's the Beastie Boys Oct 10, 2022
    Show notes

The Beastie Boys are so important to music because they never stopped evolving. They started as a hardcore band before putting down their instruments and becoming part of the golden age of hip hop.

After being one of the first and most successful acts on Def Jam, they split with the label and took creative control of their music and their image. They picked up their instruments again and built a new sound on a foundation of dense samples and parts of rock, hip hop, jazz, funk, a sense of humor and some awesome videos.

In episode 49 of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re taking a look at the career and music of the Beastie Boys. The way they combined rap and rock. Their collaboration with Swiss filmmaker Nathaniel Hornblower. The female Beastie Boy in the early years. How they invented the term mullet. And more.

Our show is sponsored by our home base of McCusker's Tavern at 17th and Shunk Streets in Philadelphia. We are proud supporters of our friends at Boldfoot Socks. We are just one of the dozens of awesome shows on the Pantheon Podcast Network.

Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew Episode 34 "Automatic For The People" Oct 08, 2022
    Show notes

On the 34 Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the highly acclaimed eighth studio album by R.E.M., "Automatic For The People." The album went to Number 2 on the Billboard charts, went 4 X platinum and sold over 18 Million copies worldwide.

R.E.M. known for college music had just exploded with their last album "Out Of Time" with the help of the single, "Losing My Religion." They decided to make this new album to sound like nothing else contemporary and filled with non-R.E.M.-type songs. The result was this masterpiece filled with songs about, loss, death, mortality, transition and more.

The album was a group effort with guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry using all sorts of instruments and sounds to make the music while songwriter and vocalist extraordinaire, Michael Stipe provided the moving vocals and lyrics to this essential album of the 1990's.

Considered by many as perhaps R.E.M.'s best album, the album contains many of R.E.M.'s best songs, like Everybody Hurts, Man On The Moon, Nightswimming and Find The River and more. The album featured six singles and videos, which were played on MTV on heavy rotation.

As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 32 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew.

This was Zeus' pick and this album led to the rankings changing a lot by all three ARC members. We are talking 90's Alternative Music so if you believe...

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Keith Richards - Main Offender 30th Anniversary Edition Review Oct 07, 2022
    Show notes

Keith Richards made Talk is Cheap in 1988 as a response to Mick Jagger's efforts as a solo artist and the sniping the two had engaged in via the press in the mid-80s. But the Glimmer Twins made up, recorded Steel Wheels in 1989 and launched one of the biggest tours in rock history, reestablishing the Stones as a viable touring act.

However, Keith didn't want to give up this fabulous band he'd created with Steve Jordan (now in the Stones), Charlie Drayton, Ivan Neville, Waddy Wachtel, Sarah Dash and Bobby Keys. So while the Stones paused before Voodoo Lounge, Keith & the X-Pensive Wynos released Main Offender. Wicked As It Seems was a bit of a hit on rock radio and inspired Mick to work with Keith to create Love Is Strong off Voodoo Lounge.

It's a great album and the band did tour to support it. We're reviewing the 30th anniversary edition which includes a live performance from England in 1993. Truth be told this one has been on the shelf for a while as the 30th anniversary edition was released in March 2022 but we've been busy with interviews, live concert reviews and lots of fun stuff. So ahead of its official anniversary on October 19, we offer our review of Main Offender 30th Anniversary Edition.
