Rock's Backpages Ep. 107: David Bates on making hits + Julian Cope audio + Dusty Hill R.I.P. Aug 11, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode, Barney, Mark & Jasper invite legendary A&R man David Bates to tell them about his long & distinguished career in music — particularly the years he spent working at Phonogram with the likes of Tears For Fears, Def Leppard & Robert Plant.

David reminisces about hearing the Beatles on the radio in 1962, and how that took him eventually to DJ'ing & to working at Richard Branson's first Virgin megastore in the '70s. A clip from our 1990 Was (Not Was) audio interview prompts recall of the droll duo & of David Geffen, after which our guest talks about the "torturous" process of overseeing Tears For Fears' eye-wateringly expensive Seeds Of Love album. He also recalls reuniting Robert Plant with Led Zep bandmate Jimmy Page for 1994's live No Quarter album.

From there we segue into the week's new audio interview, which features Julian Cope — frontman with David's first major Phonogram signing the Teardrop Explodes — talking to a roomful of French music journalists about 1991's Peggy Suicide album. Two clips from this highly entertaining press conference prompt memories of the inimitable "Saint Julian" from our guest, who also joins in with the RBP team's tribute to ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill, God rest his beard.

Mark concludes the episode with quotes from his favourite library additions over the past fortnight, including pieces about Joe South and Earth, Wind & Fire, and Barney & Jasper respond with remarks on interviews with Seth Lakeman and Christina Aguilera.

Many thanks to special guest David Bates; find his playlists at dbfinestkind.com.

Pieces discussed: David Bates on life as an A&R man, Was (Not Was) audio, Tears for Fears' Seeds of Love, Julian Cope, Julian Cope audio, John Sinclair, Dusty Hill, Record shops and Hammond B3s, Earth, Wind and Fire, Jerry Lee Lewis, Joe South, Television, Chuck E. Weiss, Seth Lakeman, Christina Aguilera and Arctic Monkeys.

Performance Anxiety: Jay Reifel Aug 11, 2021
    Show notes

This week we take a left turn. I invited a chef to be my guest this week. His name is Jay Reifel and he just beat Bobby Flay! With a mincemeat pie. And that’s why I reached out. His supper club, Edible History, takes recipes from ancient manuscripts and recreates them to give diners a literal taste of history. But he didn’t start out as a chef. We talk about his early life, somehow dual enrolling in high school & college and finding an interesting loophole; writing movies in LA; and eventually leaving to bake bread in the midwest.

We also discuss how bread is like puppies, whipped cream guilt, ordering herbs from witches, and a whole lot more. Jay gives us a little behind the scenes peek at how cooking competitions are created, as he has been on both Chopped and Beat Bobby Flay. Check out Brooklyn-based Edible History on social media. Go to ediblehistorynyc.com to check out some amazing menus. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. Rate & review us, please! Merch is available at performanceanx.threadless.com. We love coffee and you can treat us, if you like, at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. This story takes some really interesting twists & turns, like a pretzel. So grab a mead and a plate of table cheese or fruits & nuts, and settle in to Jay Reifel on Performance Anxiety; a proud member of the Pantheon Podcast family.

Shout It Out Loudcast: "Smashes, Thrashes & Hits" Aug 10, 2021
    Show notes

This week Tom & Zeus review the 1988 KISS compilation, "Smashes, Thrashes & Hits!" This is the first compilation for KISS in the United States, since Double Platinum in 1978. The album also featured two new Eighties-style tracks with hilarious videos, not in a good way.

The album is certified double platinum and is the best selling KISS album since Nielson Soundscan began in 1991. Most of the rest of the tracks were remixed to controversial results, including a new Eric Carr-sung Beth.

The guys breakdown the new songs and videos, the song selections and the remixes. They then rank the album cover and the album as a whole against previously reviewed compilation albums.

    Watch out for those panties!

Performance Anxiety: Steve Dawson (Dolly Varden, Funeral Bonsai Wedding) Aug 09, 2021
    Show notes

Steve Dawson grew up listening to a transistor radio instead of satellite radio and streaming platforms. And that informs the music he writes today. After playing in Dolly Varden for years and releasing albums as a solo artist, Steve stepped away from music. But after taking a class with Richard Thompson and Patty Griffin, he felt the time was right to come back. Some of the work he created in that class made its way onto Steve’s new album, At The Bottom Of A Canyon In The Branches Of A Tree. But there’s an entire lifetime of stories Steve shares with us, like the inspirations for several of his albums, and how he got the name for his band Funeral Bonsai Wedding, and how he came to write a book about songwriting. Follow Steve @stevdawso on Instagram. Pick up At The Bottom Of A Canyon In The Branches Of A Tree on bandcamp or wherever you get new music. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. Rate & review. Merch can be purchased at performanceanx.threadless.com. Coffee can be donated at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Inside The Banjoverse: Lisa Canny - Irish Tenor Banjo, Harp, Singer, Songwriter Aug 09, 2021
    Show notes

I had a lot of fun interviewing the effervescent Lisa Canny, she's high energy, high achieving, genre defying and very funny. A Mayo native, Lisa is a 7 time national champion on multiple instruments, yet despite spending her nascent years steeped in traditional Irish music she has gone on to create fascinating music fusing her Irish roots with hip hop and pop sounds. Now based in London, Lisa has a very refreshing take on the music industry and, as it turns out, life in general!

    No Filler: Quantic - The 5th Exotic - Jazzy, Soulful, Funk-Infused Trip-Hop Aug 09, 2021
    Show notes

On this episode we explore the album that solidified Quentin's love for downtempo music: Quantic's The 5th Exotic. From start to finish, Will Holland (aka Quantic) skillfully fuses elements of jazz, soul, funk, dub, and hip-hop all into one seamless trip-hop journey. And the record came out just as the producer turned 21, signaling the start of a very prolific career for one of the busiest artists in the industry. We also explore two of his side projects, The Quantic Soul Orchestra and Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro, where he ditches the computer and sequencer for a live band, making music that sounds just like the records he himself samples. Grab a good pair of headphones for this one!

    Tracklist:

    1. Introduction + The Fifth Exotic
    2. Life In The Rain
    3. Time Is The Enemy
    4. The Quantic Soul Orchestra - West Pier Getdown
    5. Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro - Más Pan
    6. Slim - Water (courtesy of Soma FM's Groove Salad)
