Rock's Backpages Ep. 109: Simon Reynolds on Melody Maker + Saint Etienne + Heaven 17 + Lee 'Scratch' Perry Sep 07, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode we're thrilled to host Simon Reynolds, beamed in from his adopted Southern California. One of the most outstanding music writers of the past three and a half decades, Simon talks to us about his formative pop years; his own early fanzines Margin and Monitor; and the sea-change he (and others) brought to Melody Maker in the late '80s.

Simon's fascinating and passionate Pitchfork piece 'Worth the Wait' (2014) is the springboard for a general discussion of the peak years of the MM, the NME and the general phenomenon of the UK's weekly music press. The conversation turns to what's been lost in the digital/internet era, but also what's been gained.

One of Simon's fellow Melody Maker scribes was Bob Stanley, which affords us the excuse to rhapsodise about Bob's neo-retro meta-pop trio Saint Etienne. With their latest album I've Been Trying To Tell You due for imminent release, Simon and Barney reminisce happily about the impact of their glorious 1991 debut Foxbase Alpha.

The week's new audio interview — Adam Blake's 1988 conversation with Heaven 17 — takes us even further back in pop time, to the Sheffield group's 40-year-old (and still highly impressive) Penthouse & Pavement album... and to a more general discussion of proto-synthpop and the first edition of the Human League. We hear two clips of (mainly) Martyn Ware speaking: one about the challenges of promoting themselves, the other about their scorn for the Top 40 radio fodder of the day (with particular venom reserved for Messrs. Stock, Aitken & Waterman). There's a brief but related digression on the previous week's audio, Steven Daly's 1990 interview with hitmaker-for-hire Diane Warren.

From there it's a not-so-seamless segue to the sad losses of maverick Jamaican producer Lee "Scratch" Perry and Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, with attendant discussions of dub & roots reggae — and of the central importance of Mr. Watts to everything that was great about peak-period Stones.

Mark talks us out with his thoughts on (and quotes from) new library pieces about Dylan at Forest Hills, Bowie at Winterland, Donna Summer and the Smiths, and Jasper concludes matters with remarks on St. Vincent and the wonderful cover of Marvin Gaye's I Want You.

Many thanks to special guest Simon Reynolds; find his blog at blissout.blogspot.com.

Pieces discussed: Worth the Wait, Saint Etienne, Heaven 17 audio, Diane Warren audio, Lee "Scratch" Perry (Vivien Goldman), Lee "Scratch" Perry (Simon Reynolds), Charlie Watts, Kim Fowley, David Bowie, The Faces, AC/DC, Donna Summer, Bob Dylan, Laura Nyro, The Smiths, St. Vincent, Marvin Gaye and Tessa Violet.

Is it Rolling Bob? Talking Dylan: Daniel Radosh Sep 06, 2021
    Show notes

Comedy writer Daniel Radosh initiated the Twitter hashtag #BD969, celebrating every officially released Dylan song, as well as posting four Spotify playlists for The 80th Birthday: Bob Dylan For Beginners. We discuss these gems and open up the contentious topic of Dylan’s album cover art, from best to worst and everything in between. Other albums covered include 1974’s Planet Waves (“it feels like it’s about to spring on you and scratch your eyes out”) and Rough and Rowdy Ways (“very danceable!”).

Daniel, who has written a book on Contemporary Christian Rock, considers Oh Mercy “a Christian album from a different perspective” and introduces us to Larry Norman (Father of Christian Rock), whose song Righteous Rocker #1 clearly inspired Bob’s Gotta Serve Somebody. Join us for a righteously inspirational episode!

Daniel Radosh is an American journalist. He is a senior writer/producer for The Daily Show with Trevor Noah on the Comedy Central TV network. Previously, he was a staff writer for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and a contributing editor at The Week. He also writes for The New Yorker, Entertainment Weekly, Esquire, GQ, Mademoiselle, McSweeney's Quarterly Concern, New York Magazine, The New York Times, Playboy, Salon and Slate.

Daniel’s blog, Radosh.net, was named one of the "top 25 blogs" by Time magazine. His book, Rapture Ready! Adventures in the Parallel Universe of Christian Pop Culture, was published in 2008. In 2029, Daniel co-created the satirical political TV sitcom Liberty Crossing.

Shout It Out Loudcast: 'Revenge' Sep 06, 2021
    Show notes

This week Tom & Zeus review the 1992 legendary non makeup KISS album, Revenge. It's album review time and this is the14th KISS studio album (including the 1978 solo albums) reviewed so far. This Gold album is the first to feature Eric Singer, who joined the band after tragic loss of KISS fan favorite, Eric Carr. The album is dedicated to beloved drummer.

This is the beginning of the "Revenge Era" KISS, where the "Demon" is back! A focused Gene Simmons along with Paul Stanley in his prime, Bruce Kulick now comfortably and confidently at his best and a hungry Eric Singer, a non makeup KISS, is perhaps at its peak. Gone is the bright glam look and sound and now replaced with dark, black leather and heavier music.

The band released 5 singles and videos including fan favorite Unholy, which is the first single and video to feature Gene Simmons as the lead vocalist since I Love It Loud. Revenge also boasts the return of two KISS legends, producer extraordinaire, Bob Ezrin and the talented and never dull, guitar whiz, Vinnie Vincent.

As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and the album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed.

This episode will make you want to TAKE IT OFF!

    God Bless Eric Carr!
