Tunes & Tumblers: "Songs For While I'm Away" Director Emer Reynolds Talks The Documentary About Phil Lynott Nov 24, 2021
    Show notes

Century Club is your weekly shot of what's new in music. Every week, the Tunes & Tumblers team bring you a mini pairing of a recent release and a craft shooter to keep your quarantine interesting. Make all the shots to enter the esteemed club yourself.

We're back, fam! All the way back to the mid-80's to celebrate the latest nostalgic club bop from chameleonic pop prodigy Charli XCX. Her latest single "New Shapes" features the one-two punch of powerhouse singers Christine and the Queens and Caroline Polachek and we have the perfect pregame shot to get you off the couch and onto the dancefloor.

Because the news is too depressing nowadays, we've kept the TnT network station shuttered and instead are turning to the comforting world of the written word with our new segment Bands and Bookworms. Ryan chooses a book for our reading pleasure and leads us on an informative, strange, and utterly hilarious journey. Up first, we dive into Ryan Werner's zine "Brainwashing Miss Teen Nosebleed USA: A Book of One Sentence Album Reviews." I think that title says it better than we can.

Stick around to the second half of the episode for an exclusive interview with LA pop punk artist Crooked Teeth. We talk the catalog of pop punk that defined the childhoods of geezers like us along with his upbeat, headbanging new single "First World Problem." Tune in not just for the talk, but for the song in its entirety. Lock the door and jump on the bed surrounded by Paramore and My Chemical Romance posters. Cheers!

The Real Me: Nathan Hooper Nov 23, 2021
    Show notes

The Real Me follows the stories of young songwriters and performers with cancer who found hope, healing and connection through music.

Presented by Teen Cancer America, the national non-profit founded by rock icons Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who, “The Real Me” highlights the moving experiences of cancer patients in TCA’s Play It Back program, which matches them with music professionals to write, perform and record fully produced studio versions of their original songs.

    Now up...Nathan Hooper!

Nathan Hooper is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He was born in Nashville, TN and loves all kinds of music. He has played drums since he was four and has played the guitar and bass since the fifth grade. Before Cancer, Nathan played in percussion ensemble, the jazz band at his school and a rock band with some of his friends. Some of his favorite bands/artists include Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, Foo Fighters, Los Lobos, and Ween. Nathan enjoys seeing live music concerts. While in Nashville, he saw Peter Frampton at the Nashville Symphony and The Who in their 2015 North American Tour. One artist that he would love to sit in with is Beck. Nathan is a one-man band for sure. A creative force, Nathan is a prolific creator whose vision is as strong as his ability. As they say, “if you can learn an instrument, you can learn anything.” Nathan will likely add to the list of instruments he already mastered, he’s that kind of dedicated artist. Play It Back has helped Nathan by giving him opportunities to write songs with a producer and learn the music production process.

No Filler: Human In The Machine - Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion Nov 23, 2021
    Show notes

After the success of Person Pitch, Noah Lennox took those lessons learned with him back into the studio with the rest of Animal Collective to create another touchstone record of the 2000s. This time, the melodic electronica that felt more man than machine was refined and amplified to an infectious, hypnotic, and deeply human electronic record. The record improves even more on their trademark harmonies with Noah and Avey Tare sounding better together than ever, and the lyrical themes very much a continuation of Noah's lean toward introspection in Person Pitch. One of the greatest records from the 2010s that could only have spawned from the hive mind of Animal Collective, join us as we fawn and gush over the many reasons we love this record.

See Hear 91: Interview with Scott Barber, director of "This Is Gwar" Nov 22, 2021
    Show notes

What happened to heavy metal in the eighties? It bred Dokken, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, W.A.S.P., Motley Crue and many other hair metal bands. Meanwhile in Richmond ,Virginia, an art student and punk musician connected while part of an art collective to form a metal band that combined theatre, chops, a sense of humour, and plenty of bodily fluids.

Welcome to episode 91 of See Hear Podcast.

Scott Barber is the director of a wonderful documentary about Gwar, a band that had liked to blend social satire with heavy music. They invented themselves as creatures from another planet that had been dumped on Earth with the express purpose of destroying all humankind....or at least its political leaders. A Gwar concert experience will include costumes, stage props, bodily secretions sprayed on its audience, decapitations, and as much taking the piss as spraying the piss. For all of the cartoonish elements the band may have to the casual observer, this film tells the story of a band of brothers and sisters – musicians and artists – who looked after each other and cared deeply for each other, even to the point of protecting each other from possible death.

….and one would think that the law enforcement community had learned something from the debacle with Jim Morrison in Florida.....all hail the cuttlefish of Cthulu.

Bernard was absent for this episode, but Tim and I are joined by friend and Gwar super-fan, Jason Skitch to talk about the film with Scott from all its humour to its very dangerous moments. Gwar owe as much to vaudeville, and the boundary pushing of Lenny Bruce as it does to science fiction novels and heavy metal bands of previous years – yet they're definitely their own thing. It was a privilege to speak with Scott about how he captured a career of over 35 years in a 2 hour film. Tim and I also offer many thanks to Jason for stepping in at the last minute to join us.
