Ditty TV: Christone "Kingfish" Ingram Dec 01, 2021
    Show notes

Today, we're excited to say that we’ll be entering the world of one of today’s most extraordinary blues artists, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram. We had the honor of chatting with Chris recently about his new album 662, while uncovering his roots, which run deep in the profoundly prolific music city of Clarksdale, MS.

As you’ll hear, 662 was recorded in Nashville and co-written and produced by Grammy-winner Tom Hambridge. It features 13 songs that display the many sides of Ingram’s personality, as well as his one-of-a-kind guitar and vocal skills. According to Ingram, 662 is an ode to his roots, a nod to the area where he was born and raised. He wants people to know that the '662 (his Mississippi area code)' will always be a major part of who he is. Let’s get started with some music, and then welcome for conversation, Christone Kingfish Ingram.

Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan: Andy Miller Nov 30, 2021
    Show notes

Author, editor and podcaster Andy Miller is mad as hell and he’s not going to take it anymore: “Bob Dylan is not a safe option!” “The heritage industry around the Beatles and Dylan is neutering the anarchy of the music. The world sees me as just another bloke buying a Dad Rock box set at Christmas. But it’s not a hygienic vision of what rock ‘n’ roll used to be. It is what rock ‘n’ roll used to be!”.

Other trenchant Miller observations include: “Tarantula is an incredibly rewarding book. Take a hit!” And “I loved the Highway 61 album for its absolute sledgehammer horrible noise. The whole sound is assaulting you.” And “Shadow Kingdom. Why wasn’t it called Masked And Anonymous?” Crank up your stereo and take a bracing 58-minute hit with the Dylan Fan’s Dylan Fan.

Andy Miller’s most recent book is The Year of Reading Dangerously (“High Fidelity for bookworms” – The Telegraph). He has also written books about how much he likes the Kinks (The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society, for the 33 1/3 series) and how much he dislikes sport (Tilting At Windmills). He is the co-host of Backlisted, the popular literary podcast that gives new life to old books. His writing has appeared in the Guardian, the Times, the Telegraph, the Spectator, Esquire, Mojo, Sight and Sound and more. He has toured the UK with his motivational lecture 'Read Y'self Fitter' and appears regularly on BBC Radio programmes such as The Verb (Radio 3), The Museum of Curiosity (Radio 4) and Open Book (Radio 4).

Prisoners of Rock and Roll 30: Behind The Wall with Pink Floyd Nov 30, 2021
    Show notes

In 1979, Pink Floyd released their amazing double album The Wall. It’s a rock opera about a dark and gloomy rock star named Pink who became so disenfranchised by the world around him that he built a wall around his life as he descended into madness. It’s one of the most famous concept albums of all time, selling more than 30 million copies. It also led to a full length movie and incredibly elaborate concerts. On this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re going behind The Wall of Pink Floyd and take a look at the story it tells.

Rock's Backpages Ep. 115: Davitt Sigerson on Disco + Bootsy Collins + Mick Rock R.I.P. Nov 30, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode, we welcome Davitt Sigerson, all the way from his native New York City, to talk about his stellar career from Black Music magazine in 1975 to being made chairman of Island Records in America in 1998. Along the way we hear about his passionate love of disco, his two albums for ZE Records, and plenty more besides.

Davitt also weighs in with thoughts on Chic, Prince, David Bowie's Young Americans, the late Mick Rock and a newly-added audio interview with Bootsy Collins, conducted in June 1978 by Davitt's sometime Black Music colleague Cliff White. Davitt proves to be a witty and erudite guest, as comfortable holding forth on Robert Musil as on Cloud One's 'Atmosphere Strut' — and with fascinating recall, to boot.

Among the new library articles added by the RBP team, Mark & Jasper focus on pieces about the Clash, Vivian Stanshall, Cecil Taylor, Randy Newman, Amy Winehouse and — bringing the episode neatly full circle — disco "mix master" Tom Moulton.

Many thanks to special guest Davitt Sigerson, whose remastered demos are coming soon to a streaming service near you.

Pieces discussed: Davitt on Disco, Tom Moulton, Chic, Prince, Barney meets Davitt, Bootsy Collins audio, Young Americans, David Bowie, Mick Rock, Elton John, Cecil Taylor, The Clash + Johnny Thunders, Rough Trade and Factory, Randy Newman, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Otis Redding, Noel Redding, Viv Stanshall, Terry Southern, Amy Winehouse, Cameron Carpenter and Tom Moulton.

The Band: A History - The Last Waltz - Part Three Nov 30, 2021
    Show notes

With the show underway and a plethora of performances next up included Neil Young, who had the unfortunate experience of sporting a massive cocaine booger in his nostril as he floated through his set of numbers before more performances took place including Joni Mitchell, a controversial Neil Diamond, the electrifying performance of Van Morrison, who almost got to scared to go on stage, a collection of performances from beatniks, Hells Angles and poets, and their old friend Bob Dylan who was being difficult the night of the Waltz and almost didn't appear.

At the close of the concert, the sudden rush of triumph and sadness washed over the exhausted group as they left the stage. Drenched in sweat, blood and tears, they had just completed the ultimate marathon, not only had they played over forty songs with their peers and friends, they had just completed the marathon that was their humble beginnings in Southern Ontario in 1957 when Robbie Robertson met Ronnie Hawkins and Levon Helm that eventually led to Levon Helm, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson change the face of rock music.

The Band that left the stage wouldn’t perform live in the same iteration again, it was the end of an era, The Band, was the behemoth behind the curtain, never showy, never boastful, but always impactful. As the evening faded into the morning, the concert that was The Last Waltz was complete, but it was just the beginning of what it would become and what audiences today remember of the legendary moment of history.

Produced, hosted and edited by Tyrell William Lisson. Additional writing and research by Oscar Ashley.

No Filler: Rewind - Washed Out And The Chillwave Movement Nov 29, 2021
    Show notes

On this week's rewind episode, we take a look at the emergence of chillwave and the role of those dime-a-dozen music blogs of the early 2000s in helping launch this short-lived & blissed-out, shoe-gaze dance genre. Our main dig is on the DIY home recordings of Ernest Greene Hemingway Jr., aka Washed Out, who, along with Toro Y Moi and Neon Indian, were the three main influencers of the chillwave sound. We give a listen to songs from his first three releases spanning from 2009 to 2011.
