The Age Old Question: Why Do The Top Classic Rock Songs of All-Time Keep Changing? Jan 17, 2022
    Show notes

This week, Rich and Clint discuss the phenomenon of "classic rock radio" in the US. Every city in America has a classic rock station, and they all have their "countdown to the greatest songs" playlist. Even though the songs to choose from haven't changed in decades, these top 10 lists change from year to year and differ significantly by region. Why is that? Why do the top classic rock songs of all-time keep changing? Lots of fun and laughter this week as Rich and Clint answer this age old question. Joined this week by AOQ regular Jeff Symonds.

I'm In Love With That Song: Aerosmith - "Kings And Queens" Jan 17, 2022
    Show notes

Aerosmith was a band on the brink of self-destruction when they set up in an old convent to record their next album in 1977. But despite the tension, drug abuse and general bad behavior, they managed to lay down a few great tunes, including "Kings And Queens". Let's dig into this Aerosmith classic.

Imbalanced History Of Rock And Roll: Doo Wop Roots with Harvey Holiday Jan 17, 2022
    Show notes

This week, a Philly legend, the great Harvey Holiday joins the Imbalanced Boys as they dig into how vocal groups, singing together, changed in the early decades of Rock n' Roll. As popular music morphed from the '40s into the '50s, there was a change in tone, and approach. Young kids, singing together, unaccompanied, began to gain popularity. A&R guys were on the lookout in subways, bathrooms and ON STREET CORNERS!

Now retired, Harvey offers his views as someone who experienced it as a kid, became a part of it, and, of course, played the hell out of the music on the radio! His long-term radio influence is part of why there's such a strong R&B presence, even today, in the city where we live, Philadelphia!

Love That Album 153: Interviews with Tristan Fry, Steve Gray and John Williams of Sky (recorded 1984) Jan 15, 2022
    Show notes

As a kid, I was always told to “reach for the sky”.....I think what they meant was “reach out to Sky”....or something like that.

Welcome to episode 153 of Love That Album.

First of all, thanks for your patience. I didn't get to put out the planned Joni Mitchell episode in December 2021, so that was deferred to January 2022. That then got deferred due to the bastard bug hitting one of my co hosts.

I still really wanted to put something out this month, so a chance encounter with a couple of old tapes from 1984 ended up being my solution. At that time, I was attending RMIT in Melbourne, and spending valuable study time doing campus radio programs. Whenever I heard Australian / British supergroup Sky was touring Australia, I would get the station management to arrange for me to get to speak to the band. The fact that a band as hugely popular in Australia and Europe such as Sky would speak to a young shmuck like me speaks volumes as to how lovely they were.

In March 1984, Sky toured Australia for the first time without founding member and classical guitar maestro John Williams. He'd left a few weeks earlier to get back to other projects he felt he'd neglected over the course of playing in a band.

On this episode of LTA, I'm presenting two interviews. The first is the interview I did with drummer Tristan Fry and pianist Steve Gray on that tour. The second was recorded either later that year or sometime the next (I can't be 100% sure) with John Williams on his first tour after leaving the band. Bear in mind that both of these interviews were recorded when I was pretty young and had no real experience in writing interview questions. Regardless of what I asked, Tristan, Steve and John always answered with great detail and professionalism.

My thanks go out to David Green, my manager at 3ST for arranging these interviews (you can hear him on the one with Tristan and Steve). I also want to thank my long time friend Pete Anzo for loaning me his cassette deck to rip these interviews from tape to my laptop.

If you want to hear an early episode of the podcast where Michael Pursche (of Sitting In a Bar In Adelaide fame) and I speak in depth about Sky, and I speak with Tristan Fry for the first time in a little under 30 years, go to https://lovethatalbumpodcast.blogspot.com/2012/11/love-that-album-episode-33-music-of-sky.html

Download this episode of LTA from Spotify, Stitcher or iTunes (search for “Love That Album podcast”)....or wherever you prefer getting your podcasts.

If you’d consider writing an iTunes review I’d be immensely grateful. However, it’d be even better if you told a friend about the podcast and Pantheon – at a barbecue, over coffee, on social media….whatever way you choose, consider me grateful.

Ska Boom: Pato Banton Interview Jan 15, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to Ska Boom Interviews, which is the audio companion to my book Ska Boom: An American Ska & Reggae Oral History now available from DiWulf Publishing and Amazon.

The goal of this podcast is talk about ska and reggae with an emphasis on American ska and reggae history and the bands, musicians and people who have helped to create and influence a uniquely American version of ska and reggae that spans from the late 70s until today.

In this episode, I’m speaking with Grammy nominated reggae legend Pato Banton.

Born Patrick Murray in London, Pato was left for dead at the age of five, an orphan at six, a doorman and “lookout” for illegal late-night parties by eight, a DJ on a Jamaican sound system by twelve, and dropped out of school for good by thirteen.

He was winning rap battles by age fifteen, became the father of three children at seventeen, and was incarcerated for the first time at the age of eighteen. By nineteen he was touring with UB40, and by twenty was at the top of the music charts in the UK.

He spent his twenties and thirties recording album after album and touring around the world tirelessly, culminating in a Grammy nomination. By forty, the middle-school dropout became the Head of The Music Department at one college and Assistant Director of Creative Studies at another, even creating his own school and music program for disadvantaged youth in Birmingham.

By fifty, Pato was homeless (by choice), living in an RV in a parking lot in Los Angeles. Now sixty, Pato lives simply but comfortably with his wife and still continues to tour the US and the rest of the world extensively and has become a minister. Throughout it all, he’s never stopped being a father to his eleven children, never stopped touring, and never stopped spreading his message of positivity and love.

Ska Boom is hosted/produced by Marc Wasserman and co-produced/engineered by Rob George.
