Performance Anxiety: Stephen Lawrie (The Telescopes) Apr 21, 2022
    Show notes

Stephen Lawrie grew up with music. His dad was approached by Chas Chandler before he signed Jimi Hendrix. But his band broke up before they signed a contract and were lost to history. But his father’s love of music transferred to Stephen. He remembers being mesmerized by guitars as a toddler. He formed The Telescopes in the late 80’s and has been the only consistent member. In fact, the most consistent thing about The Telescopes has been change. Whether it’s band members or the sound of the music itself, no Telescopes album is the same as the previous ones.

Stephen admits that the band stopped doing anything when he lost the inspiration to write. He also admitted that sometimes he’s been more inspired by what he DIDN’T want to do than by what he wanted to do. He tells me how the 4th Telescopes album was a direct result of not being able to play the third album live! And speaking of live Telescopes, the band has a policy of never turning their amps off during a live show. They just see how long it takes for the venue to turn them off!

Check out Stephen and The Telescopes on the socials, pick up The Telescopes albums on Bandcamp. Also check out Foam Giant, a new project he’s been collaborating on. See Hear 96: Urgh! A Music War and Dance Craze Apr 20, 2022
    Show notes

The 1980s were headed into frightening times politically. The threat of war and potential nuclear conflict was pervasive. So naturally music would reflect the times, right? Sure thing....Bette Davis Eyes, Nine To Five (Morning Train), This Ole' House, You Weren't In Love With Me, and Just The Two Of Us were what people were buying – they reflect the times, right?

Welcome to episode 96 of See Hear Podcast.

Okay, okay.....I loaded up some songs that were the antithesis of the films under question, but just wanted to make a point that what was popular in the mainstream was still a long way from the more edgy music that rock fans were taking joy and catharsis in. While a lot of the new wave of music wasn't necessarily focusing on the fears of the world, its often jittery nature and aggressive sounds surely reflected the state of the world (that's my theory and I'm sticking with it).

Tim and Bernie look at a pair of films released in 1981. For the main part, they discuss Urgh! A Music War, a concert film showing the diversity of the “new wave” / post punk bands of the era. How else are you going to find a connection between Klaus Nomi, XTC, Gary Numan and The Cramps? It's a great time capsule of the era showing that musicians didn't choose (at least at first) to play it safe, but still found varying levels of success. They also look at a film more musically focused called Dance Craze – a concert film featuring a range of bands from the British ska revival of the late 70s / early 80s. While any of these bands could have easily fit into Urgh! A Music War, it's great that Dance Craze exists as a companion piece.

Later in the show, I speak with director and friend of the show, Skizz Cyzyk about a documentary he's been working off and on for many years called Urgh! Revisited. Acknowledging that there's not much information out there about U!AMW, Skizz has interviewed a range of musicians from the original film about their recollections of the era, and how the film got made. Hopefully, he gets to finish it and put some perspective on a cherished film without much documented history. Our huge thanks to Skizz for joining us.

U!AMW can be found on Kanopy in some regions, or at https://archive.org/details/urghamusicwar

Dance Craze is on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVexewVb2B4

Colorado Music Experience: Interview with Sean Kelly Apr 20, 2022
    Show notes

Sean Kelly moved from Vermont to Boulder in 1987 and started the Samples, quickly becoming a fixture on local club stages and building a grassroots network of fans across the country. Known for his striking voice and original songs that mixed rock, reggae and folk, the Samples put Colorado on the musical map as a popular and talented touring band. The group was also busy in the studio over the decades, recording more than 15 albums ranging from major-label experiences to their own independent releases. Kelly has fronted different iterations of the Samples over the decades; when not touring with the latest lineup, he plays his songs acoustically. Part of Pantheon Podcasts

No Filler: F*cking Phil - Drop Nineteens' Delaware Apr 20, 2022
    Show notes

For those just getting into the shoegaze genre, there are a handful of albums that are must-listens. Of course at the top sits My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless", Slowdive's "Souvlaki", and Ride's "Nowhere". But while there are must-listen albums, perhaps more important are the must-listen songs. And for many, Drop Nineteen's Delaware features one of shoegaze's greatest moments: the ethereal, slow-build simmer of "Kick The Tragedy", a near 9 minute drone with an unexpected sucker punch two-thirds of the way through that left a lasting impression on new and old fans of the genre and cemented the band as one of shoegaze's greatest acts.

    Tracklist:

    1. Winona
    2. Mayfield
    3. Delaware
    4. Ease It Halen
    5. Kick The Tragedy
    6. Angel (Madonna cover)
    7. Skull
