    Rock's Backpages: RJ Smith on Chuck Berry + Ice-T + Black L.A. + Wilko Johnson Nov 29, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode we invite esteemed author RJ Smith to tell us about his career, his adopted Los Angeles, and his new biography of Chuck Berry.

We start in Detroit, where RJ was raised on a diet of AM radio, the Stooges and Creem magazine, then follow him to New York and his decade of writing for the Village Voice. He talks about the impact of Lester Bangs and Robert Christgau before explaining why he followed the Voice's executive editor Kit Rachlis to California and the L.A. Weekly. We hear how he became fascinated by the pre-rock history of African-American L.A. and how that led to the publication of The Great Black Way (2008). His fourth book, Chuck Berry: An American Life, gives us the opportunity to discuss the problematic brilliance of St. Louis's "Black bard of white teen angst", a half-century after the creepy novelty comedy of 'My Ding-a-Ling' gave the Black-rock pioneer a No. 1 hit on both sides of the Atlantic.

We return to our L.A. theme to hear clips from a 1991 audio interview in which Tracy "Ice-T" Marrow talks to Andy Gill about the birth of gangsta rap and his thrash-metal side project Body Count. RJ recalls his own writing about West Coast hip hop before we say a sad goodbye to the great Wilko Johnson and hear the-then Dr. Feelgood guitarist speaking to Mick Gold in 1975.

Mark quotes from some of the pieces he's added to the RBP library, including interviews with Long John Baldry and Olivia Newton-John, after which Jasper wraps matters up with remarks on articles about Deadmau5 and Asian Dub Foundation.

Many thanks to special guest RJ Smith. Chuck Berry: An American Life is published by Omnibus in the UK and Hachette in the US and is available now from all good bookshops.

Pieces discussed: Chuck Berry, Chuck Berrier, Chuck Berriest, Interview with RJ Smith, Charles Brown, N.W.A., Ice-T audio, Dr. Feelgood, Wilko Johnson, Rab Noakes, Long John Baldry, Free, Captain Beefheart, B. Bumble and the Stingers, Simon and Garfunkel, Olivia Newton-John, Deadmau5 and Asian Dub Foundation.

Imbalanced History: Thin Lizzy: Romeo vs. Johnny The Fox! Nov 28, 2022
    Show notes

Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott, and his friend, and cohort, Gary Moore worked together from their youth, on and off. They recorded in a band called Skid Row, and would associate through the decades, until Phil's death in 1986 at age 36. That included stints in Thin Lizzy, the band Phil led, which we explore this week.

Their songs had their own legend, and broke them worldwide, but it was the live shows that sealed their reputation, badass as it was. Markus and Ray try to detail as much as possible about the formation and evolution of Thin Lizzy, and the varied factors that worked for, and against, the band.

Hope you find some good stuff in this one. Music, history, or something else...

Matt Rowland Hill Nov 27, 2022
    Show notes

Writer Matt Rowland Hill is well placed to comment on Dylan’s ‘Property of Jesus’ years: “the kind of fire-and-brimstone Christianity that I grew up with was exactly the kind that Dylan converted into. He was ripe to be captured”. At the age of 17, Matt wangled his way past security in London, hoping to accost his hero, only to told by members of Dylan’s band that “Bob’s getting his pre-show acupuncture”. He did, however, manage to spend a drunken evening with legendary literary critic Christopher Ricks, discussing Dylan. As a former addict, Oxford literature graduate Matt is also well placed to give advice on what to do if you’re being watched while waiting for your man (“the police won’t pay any attention to anyone waiting to buy Class A drugs if they’re reading Jane Austen”). This is an episode that accesses areas we have never entered before. Don’t miss it.

Matt Rowland Hill grew up as the son of a preacher man in an evangelical Christian church in South Wales. After a loss of faith in his late teens, Matt began his search for salvation elsewhere, turning to books before developing a growing relationship with drugs. He became addicted to crack and heroin in his early twenties, an ordeal that stretched over a decade. His memoir of that time, Original Sins, published in 2022, was nominated for the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction. Matt has also written for The Independent, The Guardian, The Literary Review, The New Statesman and The Daily Telegraph. He lives in London.

Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Who - It's Hard Nov 26, 2022
    Show notes

The Who were ready to call it a day in 1982 which makes It's Hard their swan song. Of course they eventually came back but they were facing MTV, middle age, solo careers and examining life through different lenses. Keith Moon died in 1978 after the release of Who Are You and The Who soldiered on with Kenney Jones (The Faces) on the drums. But Pete Townshend's solo debut Empty Glass in 1980, which featured the mega-hit Let My Love Open The Door, put the band in an awkward position.

The Who released Face Dances in 1981 but Pete was more keen on a solo career after the triple platinum Empty Glass. But the record company wanted one more Who album and tour and It's Hard was to serve as The Who's swan song which it did for nearly a quarter of a decade.

Radio hits Athena and Eminence Front are well known but diving deeper into the album unlocks some unheralded songs written by John Entwhistle, Pete's contemplation of himself as a middle age rock star and what their collective future might be with or without the band. While some of the keyboards and synths might make this one sound dated, some of the themes of struggling to understand your place in the world are as poignant as ever. It was fun to rediscover this one!
