Poetry has been a powerful medium for uncovering hidden truths throughout history. From ancient Greek tragedies to modern-day spoken word, poets have used their words to shine a light on the aspects of human experience that we often try to keep hidden.

So many people think that poetry is just a form of entertainment or a way to express oneself creatively. But the truth is, poetry has always been so much more than that. Truth Is In The Art is a powerful tool for social commentary, for personal reflection, and for uncovering the hidden truths that lie beneath the surface of our everyday lives. Its Spoken Word has the power to challenge our assumptions, to question our beliefs, and to open our eyes to new perspectives and ways of thinking.

Most people think poetry is just about the words on the page. But Truth Is In The Art is so much more than just words – it's about the emotions, the experiences, and the insights that its words convey. It has the power to evoke emotions, to create connections, and to inspire change. And yet, despite its power, poetry is often overlooked or underappreciated. We think of it as something that we studied in school, something that we might read on special occasions, but not something that has the power to change our lives.

But poetry has always been a powerful tool for social commentary. Think about it – some of the most powerful and enduring poems of all time are those that challenge the status quo, that speak truth to power, and that give voice to those who have been marginalized or oppressed. From Langston Hughes to Maya Angelou, from Pablo Neruda to Warsan Shire, poets have used their words to challenge injustice, to advocate for change, and to inspire action.

Take, for example, the poem "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus. On the surface, it's a sonnet about the Statue of Liberty, but beneath the surface, it's a powerful commentary on the American Dream and the idea of freedom. It's a poem that speaks directly to the immigrant experience, to the hopes and dreams of those who come to America seeking a better life. And yet, it's also a poem that challenges us to think about what it means to be American, to think about the values and ideals that we hold dear.

Or take the poem "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou. On the surface, it's a poem about resilience, about overcoming adversity, but beneath the surface, it's a powerful commentary on the African-American experience, on the legacy of slavery and racism, and on the power of the human spirit to overcome even the most daunting challenges.

(In)Justice: Killer Privilege

In December 2014, Katja Faber received the news every parent fears most. Her son Alex, 23, had been killed. Chilling details emerged in the months that followed: her son’s killer had been his university friend Bennet – the son of an ultra-rich art dealer – who had brutally beaten Alex before murdering him. The killing took place on Zurich’s Gold Coast – a place of extraordinary privilege, just like the killer’s upbringing. But even more extraordinary are some of the revelations that have since surfaced about Bennet, his history, and the cat-and-mouse game he continues to play with the authorities to this day.

(In)Justice – Killer Privilege , hosted by London Standard journalist Katie Strick, takes listeners on a journey around the world as Katja Faber seeks justice for her son. It is a story of traumatic grief, the psychology of wealth, and how power and privilege can intersect with the justice system – with often terrifying consequences.

This is a production from Message Heard and The London Standard.

Bad at Goodbyes

On Bad At Goodbyes, we offer a calm, clear-eyed, creative look at plants and animals from the IUCN Critically Endangered Red List. Research-based, we share species details, behaviors, habitat, and conservation information. And then at the end of each show we perform an ambient soundscape, to hold space for contemplation, delight, awe and perhaps grief. Without dedicated conservation action, some of these species will not survive the 21st century. And so, though listening and learning, perhaps we might acknowledge that journey with a moment of our attention, in recognition of our kinship. Thanks for listening.

Daily Gospel Exegesis

This is a short daily podcast, where we go through an exegesis of the gospel reading from the current day’s Mass.
The Catholic Church teaches that in order to understand the Scriptures, we must start with the literal sense – in other words, how the original hearers of the text would have understood it.
That is our aim in this podcast – to help understand what the gospel writers (and more importantly, Jesus) were intending to communicate in today’s reading, as well as providing links to the Catechism. Each episode is short and designed to be listened to before or after attending daily Mass.

This podcast follows the calendar and Mass readings for the General Roman Lectionary. Therefore, all Gospel readings are taken from The Jerusalem Bible, published and copyright © 1966, 1967 and 1968 by Hodder & Stoughton and by Doubleday, a division of Random House, Inc.

Overlooked: Women’s Health Can’t Wait

Immersive personal stories and conversations about women’s health.

Overlooked is an award-winning women’s health podcast, hosted by journalist Golda Arthur.

In this podcast, we ask, what has been most overlooked, and where is the inequality felt more deeply?

The mission of Overlooked is to empower women by helping them advocate better for themselves, and we do this by featuring immersive personal storytelling, and in-depth conversations about women’s health.

Overlooked began as a series about ovarian cancer, told through the story of Golda’s mother, Teresa. After that first season, the show broadened its focus to look at other topics and stories about women’s health, including menopause, endometriosis, motherhood, and survivorship.
