Hello and welcome to the one and only Pokemon Catch-up! Today, we're diving into the Pokemon Fast Track Viewing List, as always. We are slowly nearing the end of the season and the end of Ash's journey across Kanto. In the last episode that we covered, Ash obtained his 7th badge from Blaine and headed straight toward Viridian City where there was a gym that Ash, mysteriously, skipped.
Let's join Ash, Misty, and Brock for more of their shenanigans!
Today’s Episode: Season 1 (Indigo League), Episode 63: “The Battle of the Badge”
The group finally arrives at Viridian City and Ash is hoping to battle for his 8th and final badge. He remarks that it's been a whole year since they were there last! They arrive at the Pokemon Center that Team Rocket blew up the last time they were there and it's been rebuilt. Brock points to the Viridian City gym and tells Ash that's where he has to go to get his Earth badge.
Ash gets fired up but in fact, it was just Pikachu and Togepi made an actual fire and burned Ash's foot. The scene turns into an emotional moment where Ash declares his utmost confidence in Pikachu's abilities.
A fancy car pulls up to break up the moment and Gary steps out, already laughing at Ash. His cheerleaders cheer him on as the boy mocks Ash. He pulls out his case with ten different badges and laughs at the fact that Ash doesn't even have the minimum to enter the league! But wait, how does Gary have 10 badges when there are only 8 official gyms? We (might) find out in the trivia section!
Gary jumps out of the car and requests a battle with the gym leader. Him and the cheerleaders run into the gym and the guards in front stop Ash from trying to get in as well. “Only one trainer in the gym at a time,” they say and the door closes. Ash feels pretty down so Togepi walks up his back and tries to comfort him. The boy mistakes the Pokemon for Pikachu and thanks it for always standing by him. When he realizes his mistake, he throws Togepi in the air out of surprise and straight into a Fearow's mouth!
The Pokemon flies off with Togepi and the group run after the bird. Meanwhile, Jessie, James, and Meowth are looking out for Pikachu from atop one of the Viridian tall buildings when the Fearow drops Togepi on top of James's butt.
Jessie goes off on a fantasy about how their boss would be so happy to get a Togepi but Togepi walks off to a wooden ledge that connects the building Team Rocket is on to the building one over, high above a road. Jessie tries to follow Togepi and in typical Team Rocket fashion, Jessie falls straight down, into the concrete, creating a Jessie-shaped hole in the ground. And Togepi falls on top of her.
Note: The “silly” scenes of the episode seem rather out of character for the show. Up until this episode, the puns have been rather limited, and the on-the-nose comedy was practically non-existent. This episode marks a sudden shift in the tone of the show in our catch-up to become more of a slapstick comedy. In my personal watch-through of the series, this doesn't persist for long but it does make me wonder.
At the same time, Gary Oak challenges Giovanni who sits in a balcony at his Gym. A Persian sits by his side. It's a three-on-three battle. Gary calls out his Nidoking while Giovanni releases Golem. Golem uses Tackle and Nidoking returns with the same attack.
Golem rolls off and loses the round. Giovanni calls out his Kingler. Gary uses his Pokedex to find out about Kingler and calls back his Nidoking. The boy summons his Arcanine which uses Take Down. Then uses Firespin and in typical anime fashion, the fire attack works surprisingly well against the water Pokemon.
Finally, Arcanine's Fire Blast pushes Kingler over and Arcanine wins. Seems like a pretty easy Gym battle but Giovanni only smirks. He stands up from his chair and he promises to calls out his most powerful Pokemon.
Who could it be? The Pokemon's eyes glow immediately and it knocks back Arcanine. Giovanni tells Gary to use as many Pokemon as he wants. And Gary calls out his Nidoking and it with Arcanine attack at the same time. But the mysterious Pokemon lifts both into the air. Who could this be?
Note: This is a cross-over hint for the first Pokemon movie. In fact, this exact battle plays out in a little more detail in the movie.
We cut to Team Rocket approaching their boss, Giovanni, the gym leader. They are excited to present a Pokemon even rarer than Pikachu. They present him with Togepi. But the boss is not impressed. He questions them on Togepi's abilities but Jessie, James, and Meowth struggle to come up with an answer.
He berates them heavily for being absent for months and presenting him with such a sub par prize. Giovanni gets a call and he leaves immediately because of an “accident”. He bestows the Team with three powerful Pokemon to help them protect the gym. They're gym leaders!
Giovanni goes into the basement and releases an imprisoned MewTwo to attend to an assignment.
Meanwhile, Ash, Misty, and Brock are running around looking for Togepi. They get to the gym and come across Gary who is vastly out of it. He tells Ash about the mysterious Pokemon and how it is an evil Pokemon. Gary insists that no one will ever beat the mysterious Pokemon.
And Team Rocket makes its debut! They sing their song and tell the “twerps” that they are the new Gym leaders. Ash wonders out loud why Team Rocket is involved with the Gym but we don't find out much of anything.
Platforms on opposite side of the gym rise from the ground and Ash climbs up, reluctantly. Team Rocket calls out Machamp, Rhydon, and a Kingler while Ash calls out his Squirtle. It's a three-on-one battle. Squirtle gets a beating from Machamp and Ash gets shocked — the platforms are rigged to make the trainer feel the pain of their Pokemon. Ash calls out his Bulbasaur and Jessie counters it with her Kingler.
Bulbasaur uses Vine Whip and Kingle protects itself using a Harden. It then counters with Bubble that hits Bulbasaur straight on the face. Ash gets shocked again. Gary warns Ash that they're too powerful but Ash vows to persevere, an action that shocks Gary.
The boy calls out his Pidgeotto and it hits Rhydon with a Quick Attack, and then with a Double Edge attack. The attacks hit their mark and Jessie gets electrocuted!
James apparently wired both sides of the stadium with the electricity. Meowth comes to the rescue with yet another invention meant for Team Rocket to win. As he attempts to press the button to launch it, Gary tackles him to the ground.
Jessie calls out Arbok and Weezing in desperation and despite it being against the rules so Ash calls forth his Pikachu. Pikachu immediately jumps on Arbok and fires off an electric attack that has Giovanni's Pokemon on the run and Team Rocket's Arbok and Weezing KOs along with Jessie.
Ash wins the match! Gary's cheerleaders give him a cheer. Gary remarks that while Ash is a pretty good trainer after all, he would be no match for the mysterious Pokemon.
The boy demands his badge but Team Rocket refuses to give it. The stray Togepi makes its way to the remote control that Meowth held earlier and sets off a bomb. Team Rocket blasts off but leave behind the Earth badge which Ash picks up and claims as his
The entire building collapses and is left in ruins. The group was leaving and Ash is excited to get to the Pokemon league, despite having no idea where it was. They decided to go back to Pallete Town to see Professor Oak and ask him.
Okay, so this was an interesting episode in many aspects. One of them is that we finally get to find out who the leader of Team Rocket is. We also get an intro to the movie. Gary looks up to Ash and his strength for the first time ever and I feel like it fundamentally changes their relationship. Ash slowly inches toward becoming Gary's equal.
We're not going to review an episode next time, but the first movie! Because of MewTwo's appearance in several Pokemon episodes, the movie is technically canon and while Ash doesn't catch a new Pokemon, doesn't get a badge, and obviously, doesn't compete in a league, I still think it's worthy of review.

Hello, fellow PUCLonians! This is the first TCG article, and there is so much going on right now, I can’t wait to get into all the topics over the next several months! But first, as with all new beginnings, I want to start at the very beginning.
This article is for those who have not yet jumped into the marvelous world of the Pokémon Trading Card Game (Pokémon TCG, or TCG for short) so this article will start at the very beginning, learning how to jump into TCG. If you’re a seasoned player, you probably know all this already, but please read on anyway. I’ll try not to make it boring.
For those who have never played TCG before, what are you waiting for? Read on!
This is meant as an introduction to TCG. I am not going to cover all the rules, but I will be going over the main concepts, and resources where you can learn the rules, including the in-game tutorial online! Think of this as a springboard.
THE CARDS
Let’s start by looking at the types of cards. As you play, you will get a better understanding of the cards, and how they work in synergy with each other, but on the very basic level, there are Pokémon cards, Support Cards, and Energy Cards.
A Pokémon card has attacks that you can use against your opponent’s Pokémon. To use these attacks, you must have energy attached to the Pokémon. Different moves require different amounts of energy, so having energy in your deck is a must! Some Pokémon will also have a special ability, which is described in the text on the card. These abilities can have different effects in the game.
A Supporter card, also called a Trainer card, is used to change the effects of the game. Some cards will allow you to draw more cards into your hand. Some cards will affect the amount of damage from attacks, or even block certain attacks. When you are building your deck, you try and find the best balance of Trainer cards, quantity to keep in your deck (maximum of 4 per Trainer, based on the name of the card) and how they will work with other cards in synergy.
Energy cards allow your Pokémon to use their attack moves. There are ten basic types in the TCG. Some of the types you know from the video game, which have been “lumped” together into the ten basic types: Grass, Fire, Water, Lightning, Fighting, Psychic, Darkness, Metal, Fairy, and Colorless. For example, the Water type in TCG includes Water and Ice types from the video game. There are also “Special Energy” cards, including a “Double Colorless” which counts as two colorless energy, and “Dragon” which can only be placed on a Dragon type, and counts as two energy of any type. The symbols are listed below
HOW TO PLAY
I know what you’re thinking. “Well, all this is great, but how do I play the game?”
The best place to start is to download the official Pokémon TCG Online (TCGO) game. It is free to play, and there are built-in tutorials, which will teach you the mechanics, and along the way, you will earn new packs to open or trade. Use the tutorial. Play against the built-in trainers. You will get the hang of this game in no time! You can also enter the codes that you find inside each booster pack, to open an equivalent booster pack online! Don’t throw those away!
WHERE TO PLAY
Another area of help would be your local Pokémon League. League play is a fun environment to learn the game and have fun playing and trying new decks in person, generally held at a local gaming store. As a matter of fact, for the two weeks prior to the release of a new card series (about every three months) they will hold “Prerelease Tournaments” where you get to see the new cards, and try them out with other players. For beginners, this is a great opportunity to learn and play, as the field is even… Everybody builds a deck from the cards they receive, so it is not super-competitive, and the playing field is a bit more level.
So, I hope you now have a better understanding of what the Pokémon TCG is all about. Armed with the basic knowledge here, and downloading the official TCGO, and listening to the PUCL TCGCast (#PUCL10) you will be on your way to becoming the very best… The best that ever was!

Hello PUCLonians and Happy New Year! When you read this, it will be 2017! For a lot of people, 2016 wasn't a very good year for a variety of reasons. There are a myriad of reasons that 2016 was disappointing, but I won't go into those. This article is about celebrating what 2016 meant for Pokemon. 2016 was Pokemon's 20th Anniversary, and what an anniversary it was! The Pokemon craze hasn't been this big since the beginning of the franchise (if not bigger) and the past year has been the best time to be a Pokemon Fan!
Games and Consoles
This year was amazing for games. First, early in the year, the original Pokemon games came to the virtual console on 3DS and many people were able to enjoy the games that began the franchise. For some it may have been the first time to play these, and for others, it was the game that started it all for them. Not only were these games released, it was also made known that you would be able to transfer Pokemon in these games to PokeBank and … well, we will get to that.
In March, Pokken Tournament, a fighting game from the makers of the Tekken series (my favorite fighting game series). Some people hopped on the band wagon for this right away, others stayed on and were excited to play this as an official event at Pokemon Championships. While this game may not have the staying power of the other Pokemon games, it is still an interesting addition to the franchise.
Oh yeah! And some small games called Sun and Moon were announced and came out… All kidding aside, these games are a great step forward in the series. The games have been fun to play (even though I am playing slowly) and are arguably the best Pokemon games to date. At this time, I won't say anything else about these games, because so much has been said about them recently, but these games were the best way to cap off this amazing year of Pokemon!
Also, each month this year (excluding January), there were mythical Pokemon released to XY and ORAS. This was the first time many of these Pokemon have been available since Gen III or IV, so it was pretty nice to be able to have access to these Pokemon again!
Merchandise
This year has seen some amazing merchandise! First, the varierty of toys, plushes (official and unofficial), along with shirts, mugs, pants, lanyards, and all sorts of things is astounding! Check out my Christmas article to see a lot of these items! But more than the regular items you would typically see, the 20th anniversary items have been awesome. Seen above are most of the 20th Anniversary figures that were released. And below is my personal collection of the mythical plushes.
The figures, plushes, and TCG boxes (which I will cover next) corresponded with digital releases the mythical Pokemon.
TCG
Now, TCG isn't particularly my specialty, but this was an amazing year for the TCG, as well. As mentioned before, the Mythical collection was released giving promo cards for the Mythical Pokemon, as well as pins. Included in these were the Generations TCG boosters, which was one of many love letters that the TCG wrote this year. The other ones that stuck out to me were Fates Collide and Evolutions. Fates Collide was amazing to me because it basically featured my favorite Pokemon, Alakazam and had 5 unique cards for it! It was sweet! This has even inspired me to collect all of the Alakazam cards (as well as Abra and Kadabra) that have been printed. Evolutions stuck out to me because it was a reprint (kind of) of the original base set. I loved that set and have a collection of the entire set! It was great to see the art work again and see a few additions to the collection like Mega-Venusaur, Mega-Charizard, and Mega-Blastoise, among others!
Anime
I can't say that I am the biggest fan of the anime, but I have watched a lot of the classic episodes with Snagorina and Snagorino, but this year was something special for the anime. The XYZ saga in the anime has gotten much acclaim for not just being another Saturday morning cartoon, but a true anime that many people enjoy. Gamexplain did an entire 45 minute episode discussing the virtues of this show. Ash had a really good team and even made it to the Kalos league finals!
While I may not have focused much on the traditional anime, Pokemon Generations was something that I made sure I watched every Friday! These mini episodes released on YouTube featured many scenes that the player character wasn't able to see during the play through of the game. These had a lot of emphasis on the rivals in the games, the evil teams, as well as Looker. It was an amazing set of episodes (for the most part) that I really appreciate and am glad were included this year. Check out Ethan and Jushiro reviewing the first 6 episode on PUCL Movie Club!
Pokemon Go
Pokemon Go might be the biggest Pokemon story this year! This game swept the country and the world for a few months this summer. It was the hottest thing out there. Scores of people were out walking and looking for Pokemon, many of whom had never played the series before. It was amazing to see how many people actually got involved and have become fans because of it. While the hype may have died down a bit since the initial push, the game is still incredibly popular and was one of the big reasons Pokemon was so popular this year!
PUCL
While PUCL may have only been a small contribution to what the Pokemon 20th anniversary was, 2016 was an amazing year for PUCL. This year PUCL was able to start a Patreon which was able to help us support our community more and provide some really cool things to our Patrons, as well as the community as a whole. The TCGcast didn't start this year, but came into full swing and even expanded to become a bi-monthly show! The Movie Club started this year, as well as the recently rebranded Koffee Hour (formerly known as PUCL L.I.V.E) and at the very end of the year we added Game Corner and the Battle Cast. We also added a few writers to the group such as Antonin and Capt. Gravy who have been a great contribution to the writing staff. We have so much content coming out right now!!!
And I couldn't talk about 2016 without talking about PUCLcon. We had a score of people descend upon Thatch's house from all parts of the country, continent, and even the world! It was an amazing event, not only because of the Nationals event that was going on, but mostly because we had the opportunity to meet people you had maybe only heard on the podcast, or had only met in the chatroom. And we had 4 days to just hang out and play Pokemon. It was a fantastic time and I am definitely looking forward to going to PUCLcon in 2017, where ever it may be.
One more comment I need to make about 2016 and that is that 2016 was the year of R. Sigma. While R. Sigma did not participate in the UUTC at the start of the year because he was focusing on double, he won basically everything after that. He is the PFTT Champion, Summer League Champion, and Generations Tournament Champion. In addition to that, he also won the first unofficial PUCL TCG Tournament, as well as the Pokemon Underground Fantasy Football League (PUFFL). R. Sigma, you are a fantastic competitor and alway humble in your victories! I can safely say that you are the PUCL Champion for 2016. Great job!
With that PUCLonians, I must sign off. But I did want to take this time to remind you that while 2016 might have sucked in many aspects for some people, for Pokemon, 2016 was the best of times. Don't forget this time, friends, because it might be another 10 years before we see a celebration quite like that one we had this year.

Hey everyone, it is Trainer Thatch here to celebrate PUCL’s 9 year anniversary. For those of you who might not know who I am. I am the host the P.U.C.L. Podcast, the longest running pokemon podcast. PKMNcrossroads, asked if I would write up a history of PUCL in celebration as well as suggest a few episodes this year that I think you should listen to if you are new to the show. So let’s dive right into the history books.
How it All Began
I had gotten into podcasts in high school, and I had this odd passion to be a radio DJ. So when my friend known to the community as “Professor Sycamore” agreed to do a show where we talk about Pokemon, a passion we both shared. At the time Diamond and Pearl had just been released and we were getting into the competitive scene, since this was the first generation of online play. Needless to say, we recorded a podcast and titled it after the club we had created at school, “The Pokemon Underground Champion’s League” or simply “P.U.C.L.” We recorded an episode and found out how to build an RSS feed, and our episode officially dropped on December 31st, 2007. From there we continued podcasting for about a year and a half until we inevitably went to college. We had lined up a replacement for Sycamore, “Ace Trainer Ace” however, that did not work out. This would begin the next era of P.U.C.L. history.
The P.U.C.L. Crew Era
Around this time (2009) we had assembled a number of committed community members that helped with the functions of our community and with a lack of a cohost, I called them up to see if they would help with the production of the podcast. So for about a year, Speezi, Infinity, Green Tauros Guy, and Toast helped me record the podcast. I appreciate the love they had for the community, but I have to admit it was probably the roughest time for PUCL. I clearly remember editing out swears one episode for Speezi who had cursed about 30 times one podcast. It was during this era of transition that I met both Sarge and App, the two members of the show that would move PUCL into its next era.
The Sarge and App Era
Sarge was my roommate throughout college and App was and still is one of my good friends. Freshmen year of college they were into pokemon and they found out about the podcast and periodically would help out with the show. Then once 2010 came around they became full time hosts on the show, and it was fantastic. Just like recording with Sycamore again, we could produce a show and have some fun while doing it. Around 2011 however, the show took about a 4 month hiatus, and Sarge created an elaborate story of how we were captured by a Mexican drug cartel when we returned. Things were good until graduation found us once again when we would no longer live together. This was a point I thought about ending the podcast. Fortunately Bocefus recorded the bumper tracks we still use for the show and from there we became fast friends and formed the “Blackthorn Council” a nonsensical name we came up with in 2013 to describe the community members that put a lot into the community. It started the current era we are in now
The Council Era
We have gone through a few changes since 2013. First would be that we finally started a weekly schedule. Second would be that near the end of last year we started a spin off show in the PUCL TCGcast. The success of that show has led to a number of other spin offs like PUCL Movie Club, PUCL Koffee Hour (Formerly PUCL LIVE), PUCL Gamecorner, and P.U.C.L. Battle Cast. It has been fun doing all of these shows. I really enjoy doing it, and even as the 10th year of work on the show and community begin, I look forward to another 9 years of doing the show. Thank you to everyone that has been on the show, written articles for our website, and most importantly the people that listen to the show and participate in the community.

The decks themselves are built beautifully. I mean look at them! They are so amazing that it would be a crime to take them apart… of course that won’t stop me. The amount of money you are saving by buying this Battle Arena Deck is staggering! You have important Pokémon cards that work in both Standard and Extended formats, incredibly powerful Trainer cards that are “must have” for any players and some foil Energy cards that are so very pretty! So let’s go ahead and run down as to exactly we are saving here.
**Hidden Rare is not the one included**
VS Seekers
Wow… the mere idea that they have added two of these in the deck is mind blowing! VS Seeker is a four off in any competitive decks. VS Seeker allows you use any Supporter in you discard pile again! If you have four Vs Seekers and four Professor Sycamore in your deck then that means you can use that Supporter up to eight times! Needless to say that this card is a gem, considering that this deck includes two, I would buy two Battle Arena Decks to have a full set of them.

Octillery (XY BREAKthrough)
This was a total surprise, considering how recent this card was released. This reddish octopus is a very interesting card. It’s ability “Abysmal Hand” lets you draw cards until you have 5 on your hand. This is basically Shaymin! Except you draw one less time… and it’s a stage 1 Pokémon so you’ll need to evolve it… but otherwise is a great substitute for that flying rat. This set only includes one, but sometimes that is all you need.

Ah yes! One of my favorite cards ever in the Pokémon TCG. N is the type of card that may give you the necessary boost to go ahead while simultaneously screwing your opponent mercilessly. This rival allows you and your opponent to shuffle each other’s hand back into their decks and draw the same amount of cards as their respective prizes. If they have fewer prizes than you, then they draw fewer cards! It’s fantastic! Plus the face of your opponent as they lose their whole strategy in their hand back into their decks. Oh the pain… oh the tears…

Keldeo EX (Black & White 7: Boundaries Crossed)
Keldeo EX is a beast in extended. Its ability “Rush In” allows you to switch it to the active position at any time. Combine that with a Float Stone which gets rid of any retreat cost and you have yourself and escape goat for all situations. Not only that but its attack “Secret Sword” is not too shady neither! For 3 Colorless Energies it does 50 damage plus 20 for each Water Energies it has attached. This is a very powerful card. Now, it is worth knowing that this card is not allowed in Standard and is only available to play in expanded. FIGHT ME NIGHT MARCH!!

When you add up the value of these cards alone it ranks up to $57.23 in a set that only has the retail value of $29.99!! As you can already tell, this is one hell of a deal you cannot miss! Hello PUCLonians and welcome to another edition of Anything Goes. In recent weeks, we have had more news drops for Pokemon Sun & Moon (SuMo). With all of the news drops and Pokemon that are being released, I would almost expect the whole game will be spoiled by the time the games are released. There are days I wish I wasn't as plugged into the Pokemon community as I am so I could be surprised by these developments when the game released. Despite that sentiment, I am still excited for how the most recent developments will reveal themselves in the games. In the following article, I will discuss some of the major points of the recent news dumps and then focus in on my thoughts about Ultra Beasts and the “Snap” mechanic of the game.

New Pokemon
There are a bunch of new Pokemon to comment on, briefly. So many of these have great real world inspirations! Crabrawler, a pure fighting type, is based off of a Coconut Crab. Now, some people might wonder why this isn't also a water type, being a crab, but it turns out that Coconut Crabs don't swim, so it totally makes sense. Stufful is the epitome of cute! Sandygast and Palossand are really fun concepts and it will be interesting to see what becomes of them.
New Forms
The most recent Alolan forms we got were for Rattata and Raticate. Apparently, the people of Alola brought Youngoos to get rid of Rattata on the islands. This drove Rattata to a particular part of the islands and changed their habits, turning them into Dark type Pokemon.
I like the mouse-tache on the Rattata but I am disappointed it didn't become more exaggerated with Raticate. Despite this, I do like the chubby cheeks that Raticate has.
New Z-Moves
It was shown that some Pokemon have their own exclusive Z-moves. I don't know for sure, but it seems as though there are specific Z-crystals for these, as well. I don't think this becomes a replacement of Mega Evolution (especially with a particular piece of advertisement that has been released in Japan), but it is certainly an interesting inclusion. I am really excited to see how this shakes up competitive play for the next few years!
Aether Foundation and Type: Null
The Aether Foundation looks like an interesting counter to Team Skull. They almost seem overly good and clean. I have heard some rumblings that the Aether Foundation might end up being the evil team and that Team Skull will have a change of heart 3/4 through the game.
Type: Null
Type: Null is so interesting! It is the synthetic Pokemon made to rival the strength of legendaries. It's mask is made to hinder its agility. I can only imagine what would happen if the mask was removed. Also, notice how the mask resembles a certain other Pokemon…
If you are at all interested in a super theory where “it all comes together” I highly suggest you check out Lockstin's channel. He is a video game/Poketuber with a fascinating theory about how SuMo has elements that draw from practically every other Pokemon game and how it is all related to Alchemy. His theory (playlist linked here) has 3 main videos (one of which has yet to be released as of the writing of this article) and a few small supplementary videos to the theory. The main videos definitely get a little long but they are worth the watch.
Ultra Beasts
What to make of this wonderful beast!? Is it a Pokemon? If it is, why make the distinction of an Ultra Beast? Is it legendary? Can you catch it? (I, like TCGcaster and fellow writer, Lord Jushiro, hope that you can. Gotta Catch ‘Em All!!!) There was a trailer where the protagonist and a few others watched this Pokemon emerge from a portal. And the fact that it is listed as UB-01 makes it seem as though there are more like this to come! I feel like there may be at least three other of these beast. This one seems very elegant and floaty. I feel like there may be others that are sharper or more solid in design. It also seems as though this is something different. It somehow has a grander feel than that of a typical mythical or legendary Pokemon. It's hard to describe, but I am very interested in seeing what this has to bring to the games.
“Snap” is back… kinda
It was also revealed in the most recent trailer that there would be some aspect that is akin to the N64 game, Pokemon Snap. This was a fun, short game that allowed you to take pictures of Pokemon on a particular island. This was a beloved favorite with many fans of the series and sadly never got a sequel. There seemed to many opportunities to execute this concept but it never came to fruition, until now. It looks like there are some specific picture taking spots within the game where you can take pictures of local Pokemon. I hope that the Pokemon that are found at these spots are determined by the day/night cycle and that the areas may even be vacant, at times. This definitely seems like “Snap Lite” since you aren't moving and it doesn't seem as though you can effect the Pokemon at all like in the original “Snap” game, but the specifics are yet to be seen. The one thing that really got my sold on the idea is this:
It's hard to see, but you know what it is. That is a wild Dragonite! You can take a picture of (and possibly catch) a wild Dragonite in this game! If the pictures you get to take are as cool as this is, I will play this part of the game to its fullest extent.

Welcome to another installment of BREAKing Card, where we analyze, critique and breakdown our favorite TCG news! The World Pokémon Championships are just around the corner and because of this news is a bit light this month; nevertheless there are still a few points to talk about! Steam Siege will be officially out on August 3rd so many of you are enjoying the prerelease tournaments this weekend, building decks with unfamiliar cards in an unfamiliar meta, it truly is a fun way to play. But I digress so let’s get to the reason that we’re all together here today, the Base Set gets reprinted!!!
Oh yes, I was “that” kid..
Known to us as XY12- Evolutions, it lands in America on November 2nd! It features classic cards from the original Base Set with their original artwork! Of course we are not talking about exact replicas as we all know it would never survive in today’s standards so expect attacks and HP to be altered. It’s very exciting to be able to collect these little monuments from our past once again. Also joining the original cast are a few new faces such as four new Pokémon BREAK and 12 new Pokémon EX cards. Among these you will find new prints of Mega Venusaur EX, Mega Blastoise EX and Mega Charizard EX cards. I can already find myself reminiscent the days when I would punch kids in the playground for that rare Charizard… What?
Name's a little on the head if you ask me…
In other news we now have the new theme deck lists for both “Gears of Fire” which features Volcanion and “Ring of Lightning” which instead features Hoopa Unbound. The first is made up of Fire and Metal Pokémon and includes two copies of Volcanion which we know is a great card but more importantly it also includes two copies of Ninja Boy who we all know to be the real star of this set (alongside Pokémon Ranger). In the other corner we have the less interesting Hoopa Unbound with his crew of Psychic and Lightning Pokémon. If you are interested in competitive play I would recommend grabbing two ”Gears of Fire” theme decks to have a full play set of both Volcanion and Ninja Boy! Now if only they would do this and include two Shaymin EX. Hey, a man can dream…
and also Sun and Moon…
Next on the list we have everyone’s favorite non-legendary legendary dog in the form of Arcanine BREAK! Pokémon’s version of Clifford will have 160HP and one attack called Turbo Flame. For Fire and a Colorless you can deal 80 damage plus choose two Basic Energy cards from your discard pile and attached it to one of your Benched Pokémon. It’s basically a weaker version of Mega Manectric EX with less HP and more time needed to set up. It’s definitely not a great card but an interesting one. The art, of course, is fantastic with the golden Arcanine howling at its component. It is worth noting that the Stage 1 Arcanine for this BREAK will be the Basic Set’s reprint. A BREAK is as good as its Stage 1 so we should wait for the reveal of regular Arcanine before judgement although I would not hold my “Fire Breath”. I know, why does Fluffiest Whimsicott continue to let me pun you to death is beyond me.

Greetings PUCLlonians! Did you miss me?… I didn’t think so… but nonetheless welcome once more to the new, improved, and hopefully more interesting BREAKing Card, where we analyze, critique and breakdown our favorite TCG news! The “news” part is new, because talking about what is hip and now is what is hip and now… right? Anyhow, since Pokémon is leaking more information than our shady politicians, we got a lot to talk about! Let’s get this party started with none other than our favorite Gen 1 Grass Starter! The original party starter, Venusaur!
The new “Red and Blue Collection: Venusaur EX” is out in stores since Wednesday, July 13 for a mere penny of $24.99. While the American version comes with a Venusaur EX promo, a Venusaur figure, and four Generations boosters, the European version has the same items, but swaps out the figure for a jumbo card (sorry Fluffiest Whimsicott!). The Venusaur EX included might not be very competitive but for collectors it is one heck of a pretty card. Its first attack, Poison Powder, does 60 damage and poisons your opponent active Pokémon while its second attack, Jungle Hammer, does 90 damage and heals 30 damage from Venusaur EX. While both might sound interesting, they are way too expensive for their own good. Nevertheless this is a great collection box and you shouldn’t miss out.
For all of you Pokémon BREAK aficionados, the next BREAK Evolution Box is also out, this time featuring Ho-Oh and Lugia! Sitting pretty at a retail price of $24.99, this box features Ho-Oh BREAK and Wobbuffer BREAK, with a little bit a Lugia as well, a jumbo Ho-Oh BREAK promo and of course five boosters. If you enjoy these legendary birds then this deal is for you, otherwise I would skip it if you’re more into the competitive side. Man, Ho-Oh can’t catch a BREAK! (Get it, cause it has a BREA…. Nevermind)
Next we have Genesect, that bug Pokémon that I have never been able to pronounce correctly, arriving in a new promo Metal card. A basic Pokémon with 110 HP, weakness to Fire and resistant to Psychic, carries two attacks and frankly neither are particularly good. For one Metal and one Colorless Energy, Linear Attack does 30 damage to one of your opponents Pokémon while ignoring weakness and resistance. Its second attack, Destructor Beam, does 90 damage for three Metal Energies and allows you to discard an Energy attached on the opponent’s Active Pokémon if you flip heads on the coin. Competitive wise this card is garbage, but for a collector it is truly a work of art. I mean… LOOK AT IT!!!
It's sooo pretty!
My favorite news of the week goes to the announcement of “Pikachu & New Friends” blisters coming in November! This is our first Sun and Moon cards to be released! It will feature exclusive holo promos of Pikachu, Rowlet, Litten and Popplio! Consider this as the “lead-in” product to introduce the latest generation of Pokémon to the TCG world. If history is any indication we will see this new set arriving in stores February 2017. No matter whom your favorite Gen 7 Stater is, you can’t miss out in owning the first ever printed versions of their cards!
But wait, there’s more! The new Metal Fairy Pokémon Magearna now makes an appearance in the TCG! This promo card has 80 HP and two attacks, but neither is worth discussing. Again this is for the true collector or metalheads (Looking at you Viger!). However two blisters were announced for Steam Siege that includes the Volcanion and shiny Gardevoir pins to collect! I know what Thatch is spending his pokedollars on!
Lastly we got Yvelta BREAK, Greedy Dice and Ninja Boy confirmed for Steam Siege, which is great news however it is almost confirmed that Karen (the Night March Killer) will not make it in time for Worlds. This is especially troublesome as Pokémon Ranger did indeed make the cut making most Night March counters vulnerable to its powers. Although many are quick to assume that this means Night March is this year’s Worlds Championship winner deck, I still hope to see a surprise underdog in the lead! Go Paul!!

Hello PUCLonians! Welcome to a very special edition of Anything Goes. This week I will be chronicling my adventures at PUCLcon and Pokemon Nationals! I am writing this as I go, so I can say that this has been an extremely exciting PUCLcon thus far.
Wednesday
My journey started out pretty uneventfully, driving across the state and arriving at Scron's house. He and his family were gracious enough to host me for an evening so I didn't have to drive for like 12 hours in one day. On the trip, I listened to what else but PUCL. I started out by listening to Episode 189, which was last year's PUCLcon episode. This was a great way to get me fired up for the weekend. I followed this up with Episode 183, which was also an atypical episode, as it was a Freeform Show where Thatch, Misty, Beorn, Whimsicott, and Shamu discussed things that annoyed them, as well as many other things. These two can be found here. The tail end of this trip was finished up by listening to a bonus episode which was Broadcasters for a Cure Live show, found between Episodes 177 and 178. I would recommend listening to any of these episodes, even if you have done so already.
When I arrived at Scron's house, I was pleasantly surprised to find Scron, Bocefus, Viger, and Mr. Sniffles at Scron's house, playing Pathfinder with some of their friends. It was my first time meeting other PUCL peeps in person. Very relaxed as they finished up their game and I tried to breed Pokemon for the weekend. Shortly after this, Bocefus and Mr. Sniffles went home and Viger and I went to sleep for the night.

Briefly after I woke up, I was sent a link from fellow writer, Locke, to the new Japanese trailer displaying the new Pokemon. Very cool to see these new pokes, even if it was in Japanese.
Shortly after this, we got on the road, picked up Bocefus and Mr. Sniffles for an 8 hour drive to Columbus. There were a lot of Pokemon things going on during the ride! Viger, Bo, and Mr. Sniffles were sporadically playing their games throughout the trip. We also listened to the first episode of PUCL, which was roughly 10 minutes long, 2.5 of which were a musical intro. Classic PUCL! The part that was probably the most fun was when we played Pokemon 15 questions with a few modified rules. Every time we did this, we successfully found the Pokemon on each attempt!

We made it to Columbus and I got checked into my hotel before we went over to Thatch's house. It was at this time that many people were arriving. Dr. Shamu arrived only moments before our group did. Gator was already with Thatch at this time. My 4 traveling companions were all staying with Thatch, but Viger had left a few things in my van so we went out there to get them. There was a black car parked in front of Thatch's house and I thought, “Oh, someone else must be showing up. There are many people coming right now.” And then a female stepped out of the car who looked extremely familiar to me. I asked Viger, “Is that Whimsicott!?” And at that point, we rushed up hugged her and freaked out a little bit! Viger then quickly and calmly grabbed his camera so he could record everyone else's reaction. It was fantastic to see the surprise on everyone's face. Thatch's first reaction is not appropriate for this article, but it was amazing! And shortly after that, another writer, Sublime Manic, arrived and he was completely over shadowed by Whimsicott! She arrived without telling anyone from PUCL and proved that she was truly the Prankster Whimsicott!

After this, we went to dinner at a really cool Asian chain that Thatch suggested we go to. Apparently, American's eat fast because we were all done eating while Whimsicott was still finishing her food and we almost left her behind. Also, we must have been a bit loud as the restaurant staff had asked us to quiet down a bit.
After eating dinner, I made my way back to the hotel, where Whimsicott and Sublime were also staying. We also collected other PUCLonians, such Ten Little Men (TLM), his friend, Woddy, and R Sigma. At first, TLM didn't realize that the girl who was coming along with us Whimsicott until we started talking about how far we all had to travel. He had thought that he and Woody had traveled pretty far being from Canada, but Whimsicott pointed out that she came further. TLM asked, “Where did you come from?” and Whimsicott said, “…Italy…” and then TLM's mouth dropped and exclaimed, “You came!?” This was at least 5 minutes after we had introduced ourselves. It was another great surprise!
After this, we went to Thatch's house, again. Some people prepared for tournaments that were occurring on the following day, but many of us played Smash Brother and tested out the streaming set up. Around 11 pm or midnight, we wrapped things up so people could get some rest for the first day at the convention center.
Friday
My roommate, R. Sigma had to leave early to compete in the National tournament. Just for participating, he got some sweet swag pictured below.
For participating in the tournament, the players got a play mat, deck box, deck sleeves, a promo card, lanyard, and Vicitini pin.
Around 9 am, the rest of Team Hotel (myself, Whimsicott, TLM, Sublime, and Woody) met the rest of the group at Thatch's. We got to meet Mr. Maximus who arrived early in the morning. Before we left for the convention center, I ran to Toys R Us to get the Shamin Anniversary Plush, but there was no Shaymin. TLM cam with and got a repeat ball w/ Pikachu and Woody got a Yoshi figure, as well.
We then made our way over to the convention center. The first thing we saw was a Pokemon Center store set up at the convention center. They had most of the things you would expect to see at a Pokemon Center store, but it was all on hand. Many members of our group bought a bunch of things. Woody even spent a bunch of money on a large art print of May and some of her Pokemon.

Before we entered the main center where the even was being held, we found Jushiro and surprised him with Whimsicott and then we all got pictures with Pikachu. As we were making our way to the hall, there was a sign for the event shiny Machamp which was on the team of the Champion of the Senior's division last year. The entire PUCL crew literally stopped and went, Oh, Shiny!

After checking things out a little bit, we met up with Minor-Manectric and his wife, now deemed Mega-Manectric (or Major-Manectric) just before heading to lunch.
After lunch, it was time to get down for business. I prepared for a classic RBY tournament using the Virtual Console games. I got schooled, 0-3, but it was still fun to see a few other people who really wanted to play the classic games. Other people played Battle Spot singles in 8 man pods. Not only that but PUCL took over an 8-man pod for a TCG prerelease tournament. Thatch ended up winning this, but Shamu had a great showing using the Tyranitar card that Sublime trashed in Ep. 7 of the TCGcast.
Once things were winding down for the day, we all went back to Thatch's, ordered pizza had chips and a variety of drinks. To everyone's surprise, Whimsicott actually liked American pizza, even though she won't admit it!
As dinner was ending, I went to my van and brought in the present that PUCL had for Thatch & Misty's Wedding. Big shout out to Basket, who draws comics for the site, and Dr. Shamu for their artistic contributions to the project (Basket drew it, and Shamu added the coloring). Also, the person who framed the picture, Adam, you're the best! They were surprised and were so grateful that our community came together to give this to them.

After that, we went to streaming on Twitch. We started with a little bit Smash, and a few people wanted to do TCG unboxings. The highlight of the night was our 12-man OU tournament. Spontaneously, Jushiro and I started doing commentary for Round 1. It was so much fun! But we saw Gliscor on so many teams!!! It is under a suspect test for being banned next year for sure. In the first round, Shamu beat Mr. Sniffles, Gator lost to Bocefus, Maximus overcame Thatch, Whimsicott handily defeated Woody (who was using a stellar team of pokes (they were mine)), Minor-Manectric defeated Viger, and Ten Little Men narrowly edged out R. Sigma. After those 6 matches, it was after midnight so we decided to save the rest of the tourney for the next day.

Saturday
Before we left in the morning, there was apparently a major shorts issues at Casa de Thatch, because Thatch was missing some shorts for a while, found them, but then Viger was missing shorts. I think that all go resolved though…
There were a few people who had left early with Misty because there was some events they wanted to try, then a group left in what was deemed to be the Snaggin Wagon, and the Thatchmobile followed a little bit later. We were lucky enough to snag a couple of tables for our group to sit at, which is a bit of a luxury, at times.
Woody and Maximus got signed up for a little cup tournament, but the set up was a bit disappointing. Several players were using banned Pokemon such as Scyther, Sneasal, and others, and the judge apparently didn't clearly know the rules, so it was a bit of a joke.
We spent the day doing a variety of things. Some people drew pictures of Pokemon cards, others prepared for afternoon tournies. Mr. Sniffles participated in what was supposed to be a Red, White or Blue Monochoromatic Tournament, but most of the players didn't understand the rules and used Red, White and Blue. Despite this, he did fairly well and went 3-1 and was only one of a few people who really played by the designated rules. We also had the opportunity to meet up with Mickey from Pokemon Crossroads, who has been on the podcast before, as well as folks from the Kanto Cast, before we left for lunch.

After lunch, we took over another 8-man pod for Battle Spot Singles, where ultimately, Whimsicott beat Thatch in the finals! We also took over 8-man pods for 2 more pre-release draft tournaments for the TCG. Sublime won one of these, and Bocefus won the other. We then watched a few competitors playing Pokken for the main Tournament.

We then made our way back to the area where Thatch lives and got dinner, and then recorded the podcast. If you haven't taken the time to listen to episode 241 yet, you definitely want to do so. It was one of the highlights of the weekend, especially being able to give Jushiro a 3ds considering he has lost his earlier in the year.

After recording the episode, a few people began to prepare for the final day at the convention, especially for the Triathalon, where competitors play VCG, TCG, and Pokken against each other. They worked on building decks and honing their Pokken skills. They were doing that in the living room while others finished the OU tournament, with commentary from Sublime and me.

In round 2, Whimsicott narrowly beat Maximus, in a battle of Gym Leaders, TLM handily beat Minor-Manectric, and Shamu took down Bo. With our 3 competitors, we advanced TLM directly to the finals due to him winning his matches with more Pokemon left than Shamu or Whimsicott. The reign of the mighty Whimsicott, who claims to be a “filthy casual”, came to an end when she battled Shamu. In the final, TLM beat Shamu in a great match and became the PUCLcon 2016 OU Champion.
Sunday
Now, my recollection of what happened on Sunday is a little foggy as we stayed up really late Sunday/Monday and I didn't record my notes until Tuesday morning…
Today was a little bit of a later start, but no one was bothered by that. There was nothing anyone was really trying to get to. When we got to the convention center, I stopped and got a few classic Pokemon things that I thought belonged in my collection including dogtags with Abra and Kadabra and Squirtle and Ivysaur figurines with Masterballs.

A few people played in some Little Cup tournaments. A few people were in various Triathalon tournaments. Most notably, Jushiro, Misty, and Scron were all in one group with one other person. There were a few gym battles happening, as well, including a 40 minute battle I had with Minor-Manectric that I lost due to a flinch near the end of the battle. (*sigh* See you on Saturday!) Over all, it was a really mellow day. I think we were all really tired and the event in general was really sparse compared to Saturday. We weren't even all that interested in the Finals of any of the main tournaments. Late in the afternoon, we made our way back to Thatch's house, but not before losing 2 of our members, Gator and R. Sigma as they had to make their way back home.

Before getting Thatch's, though, we bought some t-shirts to screen print some exclusive PUCLcon shirts (just in coloring, there weren't any printed with PUCLcon on it or anything). There were a few people who also wanted to go to Walmart and get some booster packs. I felt like such an enabler… I know how bad a TCG addiction can be and I encouraged others to feed that addiction. Woody, TLM, and the Manectrics ended up buying some TCG packs and Whimsicott bought a Leafeon and Vaporeon plush.

For the rest of the night, we kind of put Pokemon on hold and just enjoyed each other's company. Some of us played Cards Against Humanity while others worked on screen printing shirts. Thatch really enjoyed printing the shirts as that allowed him the time to just talk with people for a while. We did this into the wee hours of he morning as I think we all wanted to squeeze every last moment out of this time together. Ultimately, Team Hotel had to go back to the hotel and we had to say good byes to several people, including the Manectrics. Shortly after this, at the hotel, it was at this time I had to say good bye to Whimsicott, TLM, and Woody as I would be leaving in only a few hours later.
Monday
I left my hotel with Sublime around 7 am, as he had to go to Thatch's to be driven to the airport. At this time, we said another round of goodbyes to Shamu, Maximus, Jushiro, Sublime, and Thatchs (and probably others). Most people were making their way home on this day.
As we drove, I tried to rest as best as I could. It was a quiet ride as many of us were exhausted and used this time as a bit of a Pokemon detox. Before I knew it, we were back in the home town of my driving mates. We dropped off Viger, then Scron, and finally Bocefus and Mr. Sniffles. And then I was by myself. I had a 4 hour drive to think on the weekend and start to miss the great friends that I had only known from afar but had the wonderful privilege of being in their presence for a few short days. Thatch said it best by mentioning before this, we were online friends, but now we're friends who keep up online.
When I got home, I was welcome by my wife and kids who hadn't seem me for 5 days. I was so excited to share the memories I brought home with them as we watched the Independence day fireworks. I must have left a good impression because Mrs. Snag is talking about going to PUCLcon next year!
As I am writing this article people are still finding their way home from PUCLcon. I think TLM and Woody are still on their way to Canada and Whimsicott just boarded her flight off of this continent. There was something magical and amazing about this weekend. PUCLcon 2016 was a true testament of what the PUCL community is: warm, welcoming, fun, family. I am proud to be friends with these people and and I am proud to be part of this awesome community. Thank you for reading and thank you for being part of PUCL. We love you!
