Show notes

On a buzzing episode of Ovies & Giglio, the guys recap a wild night in Charlotte as the Charlotte Hornets faithful came out of “hive”rnation for a Play-In showdown with the Miami Heat. The Hornets found a way to win in a fashion that didn’t exactly match how they got here — but that’s what makes it feel different. And then there’s Coby White, who once again reminded everyone just how fun basketball can be when he’s cooking. Is this the start of something real in Charlotte? It’s giving early Carolina Hurricanes circa 2019 vibes.

Speaking of the Canes, ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski joins the show to break down the upcoming Stanley Cup Playoffs and where the Hurricanes stack up in a loaded Eastern Conference. Plus, Darin Gantt stops by to talk Carolina Panthers draft strategy, where “flexibility” is the key word heading into a critical offseason. All that, plus your OG Sports Phone calls!

With Caleb Wilson Going Pro, UNC "Parting Ways" With 5-Star Dylan Mingo, Malone's Heels Take Shape | Should Brind'Amour Win Adams Award? | 04.14 Apr 14, 2026

Show notes

It was a newsy day in Chapel Hill. Michael Malone's version of the Tar Heels is starting to take shape — Caleb Wilson is officially heading to the pros, roster movement is happening on both ends of the transfer portal, and in the most surprising development of the day, five-star guard Dylan Mingo will not be joining the program after visiting with Malone and his staff over the weekend. Mingo — a consensus top-10 prospect in the 2026 class — has reopened his recruitment after UNC decided to move on from the point guard. What does it all mean? A new coach with new priorities meeting the rising NIL prices for key positions. Then the guys shift to hockey — the Carolina Hurricanes wrap up the regular season tonight against the Islanders and Rod Brind'Amour has a legitimate case for coach of the year. But there is a fascinating historical footnote that might have Rod and Canes fans quietly hoping Lindy Ruff walks away with the Jack Adams instead. Plus more OG Sports Phone reaction to golf's bro-ification.

Canes Playoff Dread | Is Rory McIlroy Better Than Tiger Woods? | NC State Hoops Staff Finalized | 04.13 Apr 13, 2026

Show notes

Ovies and Giglio aren't in full offseason mode just yet — but they can see the Carolina Hurricanes Stanley Cup Playoffs existential dread coming from a mile away. Just how deep can this team go? It might come down to goaltending — and based on the way Rod Brind'Amour has been talking about the position lately, Canes fans better get comfortable with Freddie between the pipes. Before diving into hockey, the guys cover Rory McIlroy's back-to-back Masters wins. Giglio is ready to plant the flag — Rory is the best golfer of this generation, Tiger Woods included. Ovies is more entertained by the golf world's growing acceptance of 7 and 9 woods and why the "Egg Salad" hat is sending purists completely over the edge. The Lightning Round covers Triangle hoops offseason storylines including NC State finalizing their coaching staff. Plus your OG Sports Phone calls!

OG Mailbag: Too Pessimistic About The Canes? | Malone Already Best Triangle Coach? Apr 10, 2026

Show notes

The OG Mailbag is back and the listeners have a lot to say. Carolina Hurricanes fans are pushing back hard on Ovies and Giglio — apparently the guys have been too pessimistic about the Canes' Stanley Cup Playoff chances and the fanbase is letting them hear about it. Is the criticism fair? The guys weigh in. Then more reaction to Michael Malone's hire at UNC — the questions, the optimism, and everything in between — as Chapel Hill continues to process one of the most unexpected coaching hires in recent college basketball memory. Plus the transfer portal chaos that has everyone in college basketball losing their minds right now. And whatever else lands in the mailbag this week.

Sold or Skeptical? Fans React To Malone At UNC | Canes "Regular Season Merchants"? | Masters Bro-ification | 04.09 Apr 09, 2026

Show notes

The Carolina Hurricanes are one of the most entertaining teams in the NHL — but the "regular season merchants" knock isn't going away until they make a deep run when it matters most. Ovies and Giglio open the show wrestling with that question and whether the goaltending is actually good enough to carry this team to the Stanley Cup Finals. Then ESPN's Brooke Pryor — a proud Tar Heel — comes through the studio fresh off attending Michael Malone's introductory press conference in Chapel Hill. She walked in with questions and walked out feeling like a lot of UNC fans right now — sold on the hire and cautiously optimistic about what this era could look like. And to close things out — has The Masters gone full Barstool Bro this year? Ovies and Giglio get into it.

How UNC Landed Michael Malone & Why It Could Be A Perfect Fit | Revisiting Malone's Nuggets Tenure | 04.08 Apr 08, 2026

Show notes

Michael Malone stepped to the podium at North Carolina and said all the right things. Now the real job begins. Ovies and Giglio react to Malone's introductory press conference and break down whether the optimism surrounding the hire is justified — and there is genuine reason to believe it is. The Athletic's Brendan Marks joins the show to separate fact from fiction in UNC's coaching search — which candidates were actually in play, which ones never really had a chance, and how exactly did the process go from Billy Donovan to Michael Malone? Plus — what is Michael Jordan's role with UNC basketball right now and how involved is he going to be? Then Altitude Sports host Nate Kreckman jumps on to give the inside perspective on Malone's time with the Denver Nuggets. What kind of coach is he really? And why did things end the way they did in Denver after winning an NBA title? OG Sports Phone calls close it out.

Today's show was recorded at Fox & Bailey in the Village District just outside downtown Raleigh. Rob Ray, Timepiece Manager for Fox & Bailey, walks the guys through the recent boom in watch collecting. If you've been intrigued, Fox & Bailey has exactly the right approach and welcoming environment to satisfy your curiosity. Whether it's a simple Casio square that Ovies is into, or something bolder to make a statement.

Michael Malone NOT Hoops Version Of Bill Belichick At UNC | Fake NCAA "Crisis" | Canes Check-In W/ Maniscalco | 04.07 Apr 07, 2026

Show notes

The comparison is lazy and Ovies and Giglio are dismantling it right out of the gate. Mike Malone is not the basketball version of Bill Belichick at UNC — and the proof was hiding in plain sight long before the hire was official. A Carolina Insider podcast appearance back in October showed a coach who already understands what matters in Chapel Hill and brings far more personality to the table than the critics are giving him credit for. ACC Network and ESPN's Wes Durham jumps on to break down the dynamics that unfolded behind the scenes during the coaching search and how the UNC administration can win back the PR ground they lost along the way. WFNZ's Walker Mehl makes the case for Malone's NBA reputation and explains why short coaching cycles in the league shouldn't raise any red flags for Tar Heel fans. Plus Hornets and Panthers talk! Luke DeCock joins to address the growing disconnect between the undeniable success of college sports and those still screaming about a crisis in the game, and Ovies heads to Canes practice to catch up with Mike Maniscalco.

Show notes

Joe Ovies is going live on YouTube — and there is only one topic on the agenda. UNC just hired former NBA coach Mike Malone and nobody saw it coming. After weeks of speculation surrounding Tommy Lloyd, Billy Donovan and others, Chapel Hill went in a direction that nobody had circled on their board. Ovies breaks down the hire in real time — why it makes sense, why it caught everyone off guard, and what it means for the future of Tar Heels basketball.
