Overshadowed Podcast — Comedy
Overshadowed Podcast

Overshadowed is a podcast about the siblings and spouses of people who changed the world. Have you ever felt overlooked or irrelevant because of your sibling’s accomplishments? How do you think Asia Booth felt after her brother assassinated Abraham Lincoln? Pretty bad! It overtook her life, and she even wrote a memoir trying to humanize John. ”He was so nice to everyone, I have no idea how this could’ve happened!” kind of stuff. Check out episode one to learn more (and try to overlook its ”episode 1” elements.)

Siblings we’ve covered include: Nannerl Mozart, Theo Van Gogh, Marc ”Cage” Coppola, Joseph Bonaparte, and many more. We also cover spouses who (typically…) prop up their loved ones, like George Putnam (Amelia Earhart) and Lady Bird Johnson (Lyndon B. Johnson), although in grim cases like Cleopatra and Albert Einstein, those spouses don’t fare so well.

This podcast is hosted by comedians Zach Russell and Charles Engle so chill out.

Jamukha (Genghis Khan’s Blood Brother) Feb 20, 2024

Show notes

Grab a hat full of sour horse milk and hunker down with yur(t) boys this week as we cover the doomed bromance between Genghis Khan [aka "Temugin"] and his blood-brother-turned-rival, Jamukha. Both imprisoned by Merkits as kids, Temugin and Jamukha make it official with a blood oath, and when Temugin's bride gets stolen by another band of those pesky Merkits, Jamukha rallys an army to get her back. Exciting stuff, hmm? I wanted to write more, but at this point you should just listen. Featuring: yurts, mispronunciations, bridal warfare, empire as a byproduct of raid-culture, horses as vehicles, horses as tanks, shamans, horses as kegs, sustainable indoor heating, and the big reset. I'd like to extend a public thank you to Charles for all he's suffered for the pod, little bitch. Patreon has bonus shizz from this ep (it will, updated: 2/20/24). The Klondike Gold Rush (California Gold Rush) Feb 05, 2024

Show notes

We're back with our coldest episode yet, covering North America's most overshadowed gold rush - the Yukon/Klondike - that spanned 1896-1899 and yielded MORE GOLD than the California gold rush, which lasted twice as long. Featuring: outdoorsy gambling addicts, deadbeat dads, lady-yeast, the boom town of Dawson, a scamming willy wonka type, and what we think is too many dead horses.

The Klondike Stampede saw 100,000 inexperienced hopefuls journeying West in search of cold gold, but only 30,000 made it to the gold fields, and only a few dozen actually made it out with a meaningful haul.

"Lady Bird” Johnson (Lyndon B. Johnson), Part 2 Sep 27, 2023

Show notes

PART 2! We dive right into Lyndon B. Johnson's reasons for departing from his racist southern past and how Lady Bird pushed him to run for elected office. We end with his hog shower, so if you're keen on hearing about that, skip to the last 10 minutes.

”Lady Bird” Johnson (Lyndon B. Johnson), Part 1 Sep 21, 2023

Show notes

This week, we're covering Lyndon B. Johnson's wife, "Lady Bird" Johnson, an incredibly intelligent and successful woman in her own right. Not only was she the *first* President's wife to earn well over $1,000,000 before becoming First Lady, she also prevented our nation's highways from growing littered with billboards & rubble, and inspired Lyndon's presidential career. Without her, he might never have run in the first place.
We split this into a two-parter to make 2 hours of history a bit less daunting :). Part 1 includes Lady Bird's early life, LBJ's (crazy) courtship, and the JFK assassination. Part 2 covers campaigning for elected office, the fight for civil rights, a gay White House scandal, how Lady Bird dealt with her husband's rampant fillandering, and more.

Featuring: proposing on the first date, "vice" presidents, a remarkable impression of Obama, Matt Rife, overly-hyped phalluses, and more.

Theo Van Gogh (Vincent Van Gogh) feat. Matisyahu Nissim Aug 03, 2023

Show notes

This week we welcome the vastly overqualified & hilarious Matisyahu Nissim to talk about Vincent Van Gogh's younger brother, Theo - a historically significant and successful art dealer in his own right - who supports Vincent financially, professionally, and emotionally through Vincent's life of turmoil. Special shoutout to Theo's wife who stayed with him throughout the syphilis - Johanna Bonger! - without whom we would have never known of Vincent Van Gogh.

Featuring: paint, replacement children, running on all fours, paint, bang beds, and more paint
