A Guide to Navigating the World of Those Who Claim to Communicate with the Dead. This week I am talking to Robert Ginsberg about his book 'The Medium Explosion: A Guide to Navigating the World of Those Who Claim to Communicate with the Dead' and The Forever Family Foundation.
The appearance of mediums, those who claim to be able to communicate with the dead, is not a recent phenomenon. Mediums have been practicing since the late 1800s, and in the Victorian Era had a strong presence throughout the United States and the world. However, we have never seen the sheer number of such practitioners that exist today. The media has contributed to this proliferation, as TV shows and films involving paranormal and spiritual themes have enjoyed great success.
But there is a problem. The overwhelming majority of mediums today cannot do what they claim. Some are frauds, others are inexperienced, and many delude themselves into believing that they have such ability. These practitioners have no business sitting with the bereaved and they can do great harm. On the other hand, there are some mediums that truly can speak to the dead, do so at a very high level of accuracy, and provide an invaluable service to those who have suffered the loss of a loved one.
This book provides a guide for all those who have either sat with a medium or intend to do so. This week I am talking to Stewart Alexander about his physical mediumship and his book 'An Extraordinary Journey: The Memoirs of a Physical Medium'.
Stewart was featured in the Netflix series Surviving Death.
In the little known and controversial world of physical mediumship, Stewart Alexander is probably the least controversial and most respected among his peers and skeptics alike. His abilities - including extraordinary physical phenomena, evidence from loved ones, and book tests - have been experienced and put to the test by countless people for more than forty years.
What started out as a curiosity through reading and study more than fifty years ago became his life's work - a life of patience, perseverance and service to the living and to the Spirit world, as he gradually overcame his own doubt and developed the ability to join the two worlds together.
An Extraordinary Journey is personal and moving - yet it's more than a memoir - it's a spiritual guide, a history of Spiritualism that includes a plethora of sitter's first hand experiences - often wondrous, sometimes deeply emotional, but never dull.

About Stewart
I was born in the north of England during 1946 and I have three siblings. My brother and sisters have all shared in my gradual development of mediumship within my home circle over a period of many years.
Until I reached 21 years of age I had absolutely no knowledge of Spiritualism, and I suspect that in common with most people who know little about it, I had always imagined people sitting around tables in dim light or total darkness, with hands resting on the table top asking; “Is there anybody there”?
Then, my brother purchased a copy of Spiritualism’s all time best-selling book; ‘On the Edge of the Etheric’. Written by Arthur Findlay it was first published in 1931 and was based on his many illuminating personal experiences with the exceptional Scottish physical medium John Campbell Sloan. Then, with his interest ignited my brother passed onto me the book to read and truly that was when my/our journey began.
The book that first inspired us
During the years that followed my brother and I read many books about Spiritualism and particularly physical mediumship and eventually we began to occasionally attend one of our local Spiritualist churches. Approximately two years later, following a service, we received an invitation to join a well-established home-circle from a lady that we regularly saw there, whose husband was the trance medium. Having never witnessed such a form of mediumship before we gladly accepted and began attending each week. The medium would go into trance and we would then receive talks from various elevated entities – scientists, priests, and occasionally by alleged late celebrities such as Humphrey Bogart etc. etc. ?
Always – immediately following the séance the mediums wife would ask all the circle sitters whether they had sensed or seen anything of a psychic/spiritual nature? Each would respond with a definite ‘Yes’ – they had all seen or sensed something. Sadly, neither my Brother or I ever did and eventually we understandably concluded that neither of us had any spiritual gift whatsoever. However, in spite of this we continued our attendance through keen interest for quite some time before finally withdrawing and this brought that chapter of our journey to a close.
Then, sometime later we decided to create our own home circle in the hope of eventually developing physical contact with the next world since it was this that had initially excited our interest when reading of Findlay’s wonderful inspiring accounts as detailed in his best-selling book. Near Death Experience. This week I am talking to Jacob Cooper about his NDE and his book 'Life After Breath: How a Brush with Fatality Gave Me a Glimpse of Immortality'.
In Life After Breath, Jacob’s near-death experience as a child ripped an opening between him and the spirit world. He lived, but was forever changed. As he grew, darkness and light led him on a roller coaster ride of turmoil, loss, discovery, and renewal. He now shares this mystical journey with those brave enough to explore the “other side,” understand the beings there, and hear the wisdom gleaned. Bio
Christopher Kerr, MD, PhD, is the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Executive Officer for Hospice & Palliative Care Buffalo. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Chris earned his MD as well as a PhD in Neurobiology. Dr. Kerr received numerous awards throughout training that recognized his clinical performance, as well as his success as an educator and scientist.
Chris’s background in research has evolved from bench science toward the human experience of illness as witnessed from the bedside, specifically patients’ dreams and visions at the end of life. Although medically ignored, these near-universal experiences often provide comfort and meaning, as well as insight into the life led and the death anticipated. To date, the research team at Hospice & Palliative Care Buffalo has published multiple studies on this topic and documented over 1,500 end-of-life events, many of which are videotaped.
This work was the subject of Chris’s TEDx Buffalo Talk, which has been viewed approximately 3 million times and has been the subject of reports on BBC and in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Scientific American Mind, Huffington Post and Psychology Today. It will also be featured in an upcoming Netflix production and a public television documentary film to be released nationally in early 2021. Dr. Kerr’s workwas also published by Penguin Random House earlier this year in a book called Death Is But a Dream, which is now being released in multiple languages.

Backed by decades of pioneering scientific research and captivating first-hand accounts, Dr. Greyson reveals the evidence that led him to rethink his understanding of the nature of life, death, and the continuity of consciousness. Although NDEs reveal a lot about dying and what might come after, they reveal as much about life and living, about the value of compassion and our interconnectedness with one another, and about what makes a life meaningful and fulfilling. Bruce Greyson is the Chester F. Carlson Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences and Director of the Division of Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia Medical School. He graduated from Cornell University with a major in psychology in 1968, received his medical degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical College in 1973, and subsequently completed his psychiatric residency at the University of Virginia. He held faculty appointments and taught psychiatry at the University of Michigan (1978-1984) and the University of Connecticut (1984-1995), where he was Clinical Chief of Psychiatry, before returning to the University of Virginia, where he has continued to teach and practice psychiatry and carry out research since 1995.
One of the founding members of the International Association for Near-Death Studies, Dr. Greyson served on its Board of Directors and as its President and Director of Research. For the past 26 years, he has edited the Journal of Near-Death Studies, and was the senior editor of The Near-Death Experience: Problems, Prospects, Perspectives (Charles C Thomas, 1984), co-author of Irreducible Mind: Toward a Psychology for the 21st Century (Rowman & Littlefield, 2007), and co-editor of the forthcoming The Handbook of Near-Death Experiences: Thirty Years of Investigation (Praeger, 2009). His near-death research for the past three decades has focused on the aftereffects of the experience, and have resulted in more than 75 presentations to national and international scientific conferences, 100 publications in academic medical and psychological journals, and several research grants and awards.
