104: Conversations on the Book "So You Want to Talk about Race" Pt 1 Jul 30, 2020
    Show notes

This week we have two episodes for you. These episodes are part of a series of conversations with colleagues from around the state on the book So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo. We'll be bringing you the conversations mostly in their entirety - editing only for flow and where participants requested that something not be placed in the public conversation.

I want to thank everyone who participated in these conversations. These conversations are hard, but we must have them if we're going to dismantle systemic racism in our country and in our college.

In the two episodes, we discuss a number of different resources you may find useful. I apologize that these may not be in the order in which we discussed them:

    • Article - The Case for Reparations by Ta-Nehisi Coates - https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2014/06/the-case-for-reparations/361631/
    • Caught Podcast - https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/caught
    • We also discussed the work our partners at Ball State University are doing in their English department. You can learn more about BSU's English department here: https://www.bsu.edu/academics/collegesanddepartments/english. Their specific recent blog post about decolonizing curriculum is available at https://blogs.bsu.edu/english/blog/2020/06/05/english-department-commits-to-anti-racist-action/
    • In the second episode we also discussed the activity from Unpack Your Knapsack which you can find at https://www.racialequitytools.org/resourcefiles/mcintosh.pdf.
    • We also heard about The Root which you can visit at https://www.theroot.com/.

Thanks again to every member of our conversation. It takes a great deal of courage to have these conversations. As the Call to Action I remind you that if something made you feel uncomfortable or even angry, please sit with that for a little while. Ask yourself why. Have a conversation with a colleague you trust to talk with you honestly about the issues of race and racism.

If you'd like to listen to the book So You Want to Talk About Race and you are a member of the Ivy Tech community, you can download the book from our Ivy Tech library to listen to. Please talk with your local librarian about how to do so.

    103: Raise Me Jul 23, 2020
    Show notes

RaiseMe is a free platform that allows students to earn micro-scholarships towards colleges they might want to transfer to in the future. As a student progresses through community college coursework, they receive incremental "micro-scholarships" from colleges for those achievements as the student logs those achievements in a free online portfolio.

Today, four guests join to talk about RaiseMe and the opportunities it provides to students from the perspective of Ivy Tech as well as two of our transfer partners - Valparaiso University and IUPUI. Today's guests are:

    • Russ Baker, Vice President for Academic Affairs
    • Jordan Dubberke, Assistant Director, Transfer Admission, Valparaiso University
    • Julie Landaw, Director, IUPUI and Ivy Tech Coordinated Programs Office
    • Tara Zirkel, Senior Manager, Community College Partnerships with RaiseMe

    Call to Action

Every episode ends with a Call to Action. Today, it's to check out www.raise.me if you're interested in earning micro-scholarships as you prepare to transfer to a four year institution. Tara also shared that you can go to the RaiseMe channel on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSROXNqfd3l85AeuZtRwqOQ) to watch videos on how to sign up and learn more about RaiseMe.

Ivy Tech faculty & staff members who would like to obtain any of the RaiseMe resources specific to Ivy Tech can visit the Weekly Email archives or go directly to the May 7 email where we highlighted RaiseMe. That link is https://link.ivytech.edu/05072020

    102: Learn Anywhere Jul 16, 2020
    Show notes

This week we're going to dig into the new delivery method we're introducing at Ivy Tech this fall called Learn Anywhere.

Learn Anywhere didn't actually come about because of Covid19. We began discussing Learn Anywhere as a part of our work to help support Single Moms. Covid19 provided a reason to accelerate the launch of this new learning method. In today's episode, we want to talk with three folks from campuses that are offering a higher percentage of Learn Anywhere courses for the fall semester.

Our guests for this week's episode are:

    • Tammy Frankland, Richmond
    • Amanda Harsin, Madison
    • Mia Johnson, Muncie with interim posting at Anderson

    Call to Action

We hope this episode helped you clarify your understanding of Learn Anywhere. Reach out with questions or talk with your academic leadership team if you're interested in giving it a try. As we shared in the episode, we're sharing the official definition of Learn Anywhere below.

The College's official definition of LearnAnywhere is in ASOM 6.10 which is available at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fO3246g923XGR4dO-yKkLTGHZKotttRykM8qhCiAdFk/preview.

The current definition of this learning method (as of the date we publish this episode is:

"Courses will be taught from an on-site instructional location following the course schedule and students can attend in-person, via live webcast technology, or view a recording of the live session. If scheduled at multiple on-site instructional locations, the instructor will be in a classroom with students at one on-site instructional location while other students attend at a separate on-site instructional location(s) or virtually.

The course may be supplemented with other asynchronous activities via IvyLearn, but no less than 1/2 of the contact hours will be assigned to live activities. Students choosing to attend live via webcast technology from an off-campus location will need sufficient broadband access and a microphone or headset.

A webcam may be required. Students may be required to attend campus to visit the testing center to take proctored exams or to complete skills demonstrations."

    101: LinkedIn Learning Jul 09, 2020
    Show notes

Ivy Tech partnered with LinkedIn Learning in April of 2020 to offer students, faculty, and staff access to the entire LinkedIn Learning library of courses. With me today are three of the folks who were involved in rolling this out to students, faculty, and staff - Dom Chase, Cory Clasemann-Ryan, and Trent Hawker.

They'll tell us all a little more about this important opportunity.

    Call to Action:

Every episode ends with a Call to Action. Take a few minutes to check out LinkedIn Learning. As you heard in the episode, you can access this through MyIvy. As I mentioned in the episode, you can listen to the videos at faster or slower than 1x speed. Here is a short video from LinkedIn learning telling you exactly how to do that: https://www.linkedin.com/learning/how-to-use-linkedin-learning/adjust-video-speed-2?u=87770946.

100: Ivy Tech Has a New Employee Assistance Program Jul 02, 2020
    Show notes

On July 1, 2020, Ivy Tech launched a statewide partnership with Humana to provide Employee Assistance Program benefits to all full-time employees of the college. This benefit also extends to cover anyone living in the employee's home and dependent's living elsewhere.

In today's episode, you'll hear from Ivy Tech Be Lively team members Heather Hart (Lafayette), Amber Young (Muncie), and Christine Butler (Systems Office) as well as Humana team members Shelly Gilmore and Dr. Randy Martin about this new benefit.

For full access details, full-time employees should see the email that was sent by Christine Butler on June 22, 2020. This includes the username and password to allow you to access even more resources on the Humana web site. That web site is http://humana.com/eap.

As Dr. Martin mentioned in the episode, you can also search the Google or Apple app store for EAP by Humana for a convenient mobile app.

    Calls to Action

Every episode ends with a Call to Action. I gave you one call to action already at the top of the episode and that is that if anything in today's episode caused you to be uncomfortable to sit with that discomfort, reflect on it and see how you might grow as a result of it.

The second call to action - the one I alluded to at the beginning of the episode - is that we want to continue this conversation through a podcast book read of the book "So You Want To Talk About Race?" by Ijeoma Oluo. I will be sharing information on how to join this book read as an active part of the discussion in this afternoon's all college email.

For now, if you do not yet have this book, if you would like to join the conversation - either as a part of the podcast or just simply to read and consider along with us - please purchase a copy of the book.

98: A Conversation about Race and Racism Jun 18, 2020
    Show notes

Over the last several weeks in the United States and around the world, we have seen protests, marches, and rallies related to the deaths of people like George Floyd, Ahmaud Arberry, Breonna Taylor, and Dreajson Reed. Race and racism are challenging topics to talk about but we must talk about them - particularly in the context of how we collectively function as a college community. I'm joined today by three other members of the College community to have a dialog about race and racism. It is a conversation that may not be comfortable at times - perhaps for us as we have the conversation and perhaps for you as you listen. I ask only that we all sit in the discomfort and examine why it is uncomfortable for us and consider how we can use that discomfort to grow and move forward.

    Thanks to my guests:

    • Chris Cathcart
    • Mia Johnson
    • Marcus Kolb

The questions from today's conversation are based on the questions included in the National Network of State Teachers of the Year which has a discussion guide entitled "Courageous Conversations about Race in Schools".

    96: Indy Achieves Jun 04, 2020
    Show notes

Indy Achieves is Mayor Joe Hogsett's response to Indianapolis' rapidly changing labor market by ensuring that every Indianapolis resident has the ability to pursue and complete a postsecondary credential or degree program, and empowering residents to pursue careers that put them on a pathway to the middle class.

Indy Achieves will focus on two key ways to increase the proportion of adults with the appropriate credentials:

    1. Increasing the number of K-12 students who pursue and complete postsecondary credentials
    2. Increasing the educational attainment level of the existing adult population, all the while ensuring more intentional pathways into high-demand careers.

In today's episode, Kara talks with Matt Impink, Caitlin Diehl, Scott Rafalski, Elizabeth Flood, and Jessica Solow - team members of both EmployIndy and Ivy Tech who are deeply engaged in work with Indy Achieves students.

If you live in the Indianapolis area, consider how you can get involved with Indy Achieves. We discussed several opportunities for engagement today. You can visit www.indyachieves.org to learn more.
