02:00 - Sooners QB Dillon Gabriel is BACK and he made his presence KNOWN with a HUGE day after missing the last 1.5 games! Brandon and Parker talk about how his return might prove he is the most valuable player in college football TO HIS TEAM! His return helped OU put 701-yards on a good defense and the 19th-ranked team in the nation.

10:00 - The defense showed improvement but has so, so much still left to improve upon. Still, big plays were made by CJ Coldon, Dashaun White, and a few others today. How much does getting DG back help the Sooners' defense? We know DG is an offensive guy, but his presence means so much to both sides of the ball. Also, the duo talks about how to take small victories in things after the last three weeks' performances on defense and names young players like Robert Spears-Jennings and R Mason Thomas making a case to be bigger roles.

17:30 - Sooners' offensive line has been good and physical in the OU run game, and Eric Gray and Jovantae Barnes have had some big-time success because of Andrew Raym, Anton Harrison, Wanya Morris, Chris Murray, and McKade Mettauer have been really good on the line of scrimmage. Texas knew all OU could do was run the ball, and still, in the wildcat, the Sooners were moving the ball on Texas some due to OL's physicality. With Gabriel back, it helped even more with the threat of the pass and the fact OU's offensive line has started to "mesh," according to Anton Harrison. Talk a bit about what next year's OL could look like, too.

R Mason Thomas was flashing and causing some problems for KU QB Jason Bean, but there was a lack of QB contain at times and no pass rush from others on the DL to give Bean all day at times. Can't have that and be successful on defense. Others that played well at times were Jalen Redmond, Marcus Stripling, and a few others.

Oklahoma comes out guns blazing to jump on top of UTEP 21-0 early on in the Sooners initial game of the 2022 season. Oklahoma ended up winning 45-13 in their home opener, with Dillon Gabriel, Eric Gray, Marcus Major, Brayden Willis and Gavin Freeman all had big plays on offense on Saturday to help the Sooners roll.

The side everyone wanted to see was Brent Venables' defense and they came to play. Sure tackling in open space, six sacks from the Sooners' front seven. UTEP had 51 pass attempts and completed 31 of them, but only averaged 5.8 a completion. Brandon Drumm and Parker Thune discuss the secondary and why how they covered was by design, along with the huge day from DE Reggie Grimes. He was joined by safety Billy Bowman, LB Danny Stutsman, DE Ethan Downs and freshman EDGE rusher R Mason Thomas as standouts on defense. They discuss what made them standouts, along with other young players on both sides of the ball that made their mark and more!

Brandon says the QB room has to stay healthy. Depth is great with the first two in Spencer Rattler and Caleb Williams, but it gets a bit dicey after that. He calls for a bold prediction that there will be two players with 10+ sacks in 2021. The staff breaks down how possible that is and comes up with two players, with 8 sacks being the happy medium. A flurry of commits for Sooners as Lincoln Riley and company put on a recruiting fireworks show! Could the month of July be just starting with more good news to come for OU? What's the ChampU22 class expectations come December NSD & MORE!

Oklahoma had five commits that started on July 2nd, with four-star OL Jacob Sexton announcing his commitment to the Sooners. Sexton was quickly followed by another in-state star with 2022 three-star Broken Arrow (OK) DB Robert Spears-Jennings committing to Lincoln Riley and OU. Then, 2022 three-star DB Xavion Brice committed to Oklahoma before a big one in four-star, and top-50 overall DE/DL Derrick Moore committed to OU.

On July 7th, four-star OL Jake Taylor finished off one heckuva week for the Sooners, as he committed to OU on CBSSportsHQ, with Taylor being joined by our own 247Sports National Recruiting Director, Steve Wiltfong, during the national broadcast announcement.

All of that was week one of July, so the OUinsider trio discussed what else could be just on the horizon for the Sooners later on this month.

OUinsider staffers Brandon Drumm, Collin Kennedy, and Parker Thune meet for the first time in two weeks to podcast after travels all over the region.

Drumm and Thune went by Texarkana (TX) to see Texas High talent and also to see big-time 2022 edge rusher and former high school teammate Clayton Smith (current OU freshman edge rusher) Derrick Brown. The OU staff seems overly excited about players, and early enrollees, like Billy Bowman, Caleb Williams, Ethan Downs, Clayton Smith, Danny Stutsman, Mario Williams, and also pinpointed transfer Key Lawrence as a potential big-time player for OU in the 2021 season.

Sooners hit the ground running on Saturday night and came away blowing out the Texas Tech Red Raiders 62-28. It was ironic that the first game Ronnie Perkins and Rhamondre Stevenson played was the same score as the first game of their suspension. Perkins and Stevenson have been out since the College Football Playoff Semis against LSU. A game in which the Tigers beat Oklahoma 62-28. Obviously, that LSU team was one for ages, but you see the difference Perkins and Stevenson made in their returns.

Oklahoma Sooners coach Lincoln Riley previewed OU's 2020 spring football schedule and what he hopes to accomplish during the 15 allotted practices. He told media defensive tackle Jalen Redmond, Jon-Michael Terry, Trey Sermon and others will miss spring practices. He wasn't terribly happy about how Bill Bedenbaugh's offensive line played. Center Creed Humphrey and others will need to step up.

The battle between quarterback Tanner Mordecai and Spencer Rattler begins in earnest, and Riley said he believes both of them are ready to be the starting quarterback at OU. He also mentioned Robert Barnes and Jamal Morris have moved to playing linebacker rather than safety.

The big news was Baker Mayfield's Heisman statue will be revealed at OU's Red and White spring game on April 18 at 5 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium.

Two-sport athletes are welcome Feb 20, 2020

OUI staff writers RJ Young and Collin Kennedy chopped it up on Thursday about the Top 247 Sports 2021 football recruiting rankings. Among them are high-priority recruits that include the No. 1 quarterback and No. 1 running back in the class.

With his move up to No. 6 in the overall 2021 rankings, Gonzaga College quarterbackCaleb Williams is one of the top uncommitted prospects in this cycle and the highest ranked player out of the Mid-Atlantic region in over a decade, according to 247 Sports analyst Charles Power.

Williams possesses legitimate 4.57-second, 40-yard dash speed. He rushed for 838 yards with 18 touchdowns in 11 games as a junior last season. He is elite when the pocket breaks down.

TreVeyon Henderson has been recognized as elite.

Oklahoma would've probably preferred Henderson remain ranked at No. 226 overall. But now everybody knows how good Henderson is as he rocketed to No. 11 in the overall rankings and is the No. 1 running back in the class.

At 5-foot-11, 195 pounds, Henderson rushed for 2,424 yards with 45 rushing touchdowns and five receiving touchdowns to give him 50 total last season for Hopewell (Va.) High School. If that wasn't enough, he notched 48 tackles and three interceptions on defense en route to state championship and a 15-0 season.

Mario Williams is the most interesting OU offer to watch.

Williams is ranked No. 127 in the rankings, but he's been a priority for OU outside wide receivers coach Dennis Simmons, who recognized Williams' talent immediately. He is ranked No. 40 in the 247 Sports Composite, a four-star in the industry-generated ranking and the No. 4 wide receiver in the country.

At 5-foot-10, 165 pounds, Williams is a two-sport star at Plant City (Fla.) High School with offers from Florida, Alabama and LSU among others. Williams played centerfield, pitched and hit .280 with 10 stolen bases for the 2019 Plant City Raiders, who won the program's first state title in the sport in 47 years.

2022 LB Kobie McKinzie's pop Will Truby talks OU commitment Jan 20, 2020

Kobie McKinzie’s guardian, Will Truby, has heard all of the talk about how little some are willing to invest in the knowledge that McKinzie committed to play at Oklahoma.

While Lincoln Riley and his staff are working hard to close out the 2020 recruiting cycle and shifting gears toward earning verbal commitments and, eventually, signings from members of the 2021 class, McKinzie is just a sophomore in high school and a rising junior in recruiting.

Means, as a class of 2022 prospect, nearly two years has to pass before he can put pen to paper and sign a national letter of intent. His process is still only beginning, and he’s changed his mind once already.

Before the end of his sophomore season on the gridiron, he reopened his recruitment after initially pledging to play at his native Texas Tech. And it’s not as if many who follow OU football recruiting efforts aren’t aware of how a teenager’s mind can change.

Notably, 2020 running back Jase McClellan ended his two-year courtship with OU to flip to Alabama just as he became eligible to sign his letter of intent. Truby said he understood why some might question McKinzie’s commitment, but they shouldn’t.

Oklahoma's Playoff problem unpacked Nov 07, 2019

The ninth-ranked Sooners are ranked behind Utah and Oregon would have wins against four ranked opponents—Texas, No. 12 Baylor, No. 23 Oklahoma State and No. 16 Kansas State gets into the conference title game. Meanwhile Oregon is 1-1 against ranked opponents with its best win being against No. 25 Washington. Utah’s best win is against No. 17 Arizona State with a loss to 5-4 USC. Neither Utah nor Oregon State has games left against ranked teams heading into this weekend. The combined record of their remaining opponents is 24-28. The combined record of OU’s remaining opponents is 19-6.

Georgia has games left against just one ranked opponent—Auburn—in the regular season and would have with the same number of wins against ranked opponents as Oklahoma if the Bulldogs win out with a conference title. But a win against an undefeated Alabama or LSU might be enough to nudge them ahead of OU. And 5-3 Missouri and 6-3 Texas A&M are as stout as the Pokes and Cyclones. If conference titles matter—like the playoff criteria says they do—a one-loss Penn State, Minnesota or Ohio State would not get in. But that hasn’t stopped the committee before. The strength of record leans toward the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions when compared with the Sooners.

OU needs help. But it doesn’t need a lot. The Sooners have been here before, and OU coach Lincoln Riley knows that.

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Jalen Hurts is the front runner for the Heisman Memorial Trophy, and the Sooners are undefeated as they get set to travel to Lawrence, Kansas. The Sooners are coming off a 55-16 win against Texas Tech while the Jayhawks are coming off a 51-14 loss to Texas Christian.

The most important aspect of OU's 4-0 start through Week 5 is they've managed to remain healthy for the most part. Though, the Sooners have played musical chairs on the offensive line with outstanding results. OU's true freshmen have also been heavy contributors to OU's success. Freshman Trejan Bridges has played both ways.

Set the table: No. 4 Oklahoma vs. Houston is filled with intrigue Aug 29, 2019

OUI staff writers RJ Young and Brandon Drummed set the table for No. 4 Oklahoma's contest against Houston on Sunday in what promises to be an entertaining game. OU announced team captains for the 2019 season are quarterback Jalen Hurts, center Creed Humphrey, defensive tackle Neville Gallimore and middle linebacker Kenneth Murray. All but Hurts represented OU at Big 12 Media Days prior to Hurts being named the starting quarterback at Oklahoma.

For Hurts, this is the first time he's been named a team captain in college. For Murray, this is his second stint as a team captain, and he's expected to be the heart and soul of a revamped defense this season under defensive coordinator Alex Grinch.

OU's schedule only shows two ranked opponents in the preseason poll, so there is not much margin for error if the Sooners intend to make a third consecutive trip to the College Football Playoff and win a fifth consecutive Big 12 title. OU coach Lincoln Riley and UH coach Dana Holgorsen are familiar foes, having coached against each other in the Big 12 and come up on the same staff at Texas Tech 17 years ago.

OUInsider staff writers Brandon Drumm and RJ Young discussed the news to come out Friday. Oklahoma Sooners coach Lincoln Riley announced defensive back Tre Norwood has suffered a lower leg injury that will ensure he misses the 2019 season.

"He'll miss the season," Riley said. "So tough injury, tough for him, tough for our team. You know, he's such a valuable guy, can play so many positions, [has] great experience. Certainly we'll miss him not only defensively, but special teams, too. He's a guy that was really a jack-of-all-trades for us. But that's part of this game. That's gonna happen. We've had a couple already, and that's why you recruit hard, that's why you develop hard.

"In some ways, there's probably some silver lining in the fact that it happened early enough that we're able to adjust and able to get a lot of guys reps. These things are a lot tougher if they happen during the season or right before a season opener. So it's given us time to do that. Norwood was OU's most versatile defensive back headed into the 2019 season. His experience at every position in the defensive backfield allowed for beefed secondary that needs to improve on a pass defense ranking of 129. With Norwood working mostly at the nickel back position, Brendan Radley-Hiles is expected to lead the depth chart at the position. But he is in competition with Justin Broiles and Jeremiah Criddell among others.

Young and Drumm also discussed players making an impact in camp, including offensive lineman Marquise Hayes, running back T.J. Pledger, defensive end Marcus Stripling and rush end David Ugwoegbu.

RJ Young and Brandon Drumm break down the hiring of Alex Grinch as OU's defensive coordinator. ___ A big week for Lincoln Riley just got bigger. On top of being rewarded with an extension for his second-straight appearance in the College Football Playoff, second-straight Big 12 crown, second straight Heisman winner and putting the No. 1 pick in the most recent NFL Draft, he watched two of his players declare early for entry in to the 2019 Draft. But he still needed a defensive coordinator. And now he has one. Grinch brings with him an outstanding pedigree with experience that spans the Big Ten SEC, Big 12 and Pac-12. Grinch inherits a defense that was one of the worst in college football. With a combination of Ruffin McNeill and Mike Stoops as defensive play-caller, the Sooner defense gave up more than 32 points per game and were embarrassed in the Orange Bowl.
