For privacy purposes, the identity of the pilot has been intentionally withheld but he has shared details with us that he hopes will prevent this type of error from happening again. Thank you, "Unnamed pilot"!

We have feedback in the hopper related to air traffic controller training, specifically at a busy tower when the controller working was in training and the training controller had to step in and over key the trainee. Do any of you have a story where you could tell someone was training? What happened?

    OB051: Special VFR Dec 17, 2018
    Show notes

    Episode 51 Show Notes

Opening Chit Chat about snowpocolypse in the TRIAD area. Thank you, @avgeekandrew for the great picture.

    Topic of the show 5:42

"ER" asked about Special VFR: "There is one thing that is still a mystery: SVFR. When\How do you grant this magical clearance? What kind of magic do you possess to let me skim clouds in reduced visibility situations without the risk of hitting other things? How does ATC treat a SVFR aircraft?"

AG and RH use the JO 7110.65X and the AIM to break down the topic and answer his questions. Check out this great article on SVFR from boldmethod.

For the pilots out there, tell us who your aviation role model was before you made the leap and got your training? Was it a family member, movie star, or the pilot that flew your first commercial flight?

    OB049: Medical Emergencies Dec 03, 2018
    Show notes

It's Monday December 3, 2018. Welcome back, everyone. On today's show, we talk about pilot medical issues and keep chipping away at the feedback!

"Tango Mike, The Fire Truck Guy" sent in some great audio feedback about controller's diagnosing pilot's with medical emergencies. How do controllers train to recognize these events and more importantly, how do the controllers help the pilot's in need? What happens when a pilot demonstrates diminished mental capacity or shows signs of hypoxia or possible intoxication?

Audio from a distressed/hypoxic pilot and interaction with ATC.

Audio from an incident involving a drunk pilot and ATC recognizing the problem and alerting authorities. Great job, ATC! The controllers were honored at the Archie League Awards banquet in September. To learn more about the Archie League Awards, click here.

To watch the video, click here.

Hosted annually by the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA), Communicating For Safety (CFS) is the aviation industry's leading conference focusing on safety, technology and building relationships. This three-day event is unique in that it's the only conference of its kind to focus specifically on the air traffic needs of all members of the aviation community who are affected by the National Airspace System (NAS).

Who sees it? How do you activate it? Why is it so important? Mike Delta sent in audio about his recent flight in the cold tundra up North. What does "Radar Contact Lost" mean? How do we separate aircraft not under radar coverage? AG tells a story of audio issues in the helicopter while using his night vision goggles. Have a great week and thanks for listening!
