Only One In The Room

Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”. Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you to think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school, or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.

Imagine growing up in a culture where from the time you were born, there was a playbook as to how your life should look. You go to school, get your college degree, get married and then have at least two kids, in that order.

Rochelle Webb, faculty member at Loyola Marymount University and founder of Optimist Made, a cause-inspired e-tailer, realized in her thirties that she had attended over 100 weddings and was starting to become the focus of her friends and family who often wondered out loud, “Why are you still single?”

So what would you do if society demanded that it was “time” for you to find a man, but you weren’t interested partnering up with someone simply so that you wouldn’t be alone? Would you take suggestions from well-meaning friends and use dating apps and matchmakers to find your ideal mate? Or would you empower yourself with the realization that you were fine on your own.

Picture this - it’s morning, and you’ve woken up on a mattress stained with food, wine and puke. Your computer and your TV are still on and there are half-eaten food cartons and beer bottles strewn around your apartment. Can you imagine what it must feel like to realize for the first and last time that this is NOT normal, not something you will just “grow out of” one day?

Holly Whitaker, founder and CEO of Tempest Sobriety, and author of the New York Times bestselling memoir/self help book, Quit Like A Woman, found herself at a crossroads in 2013 after finding that she was unable to connect with the literature and tenants of the recovery meetings she’d been attending.

So what would you do if you wanted to stop drinking but the traditional way felt too patriarchal, and simply did not resonate with you? Would you decide to keep trying anyway, since it was the only game in town? Or would you start your own sobriety school?
