Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”. Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you to think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school, or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.

Acclaimed Korean American writer and author Marie Myung-Ok Lee accepted the diagnosis of autism the doctors gave her son but knew that there was something else going on, something that defied traditional treatment plans and medication. Rafael Agustin is a writer on the award-winning The CW show Jane The Virgin and is a past Sundance Institute Episodic Fellow. He currently serves as CEO of the Latino Film Institute, overseeing the Youth Cinema Project, the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF), and LatinX in Animation. In 2018, LA Weekly named Agustin one of the fifty most essential people in Los Angeles. The United Nations also invited him to speak at their 70th Anniversary Celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Additionally, the LA Times declared Agustin a "Power Player" in their inaugural LA Vanguardia class in 2022. He is a Board Member of Mother Jones and the National Film Preservation Board at the Library of Congress. Agustin received his AA from Mt. San Antonio College and his BA and MA from UCLA's School of Theater, Film & Television.

Lauren Chan – The Only Plus-Size Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Rookie to Come Out As Queer Jun 25, 2024

Lauren Chan is a size-inclusion activist, having made an impact on the fashion industry over the past decade as a model (JAG), fashion editor (Glamour), and exited plus-size clothing brand founder (Henning, acquired by Universal Standard). In 2023, she became a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit rookie and has since branched into television hosting. Chan identifies as AAPI and LGBTQ+; her pronouns are she/her.
Laura opens the show by talking to Lauren about when she came out as gay and what her adolescence was like. This leads Lauren to talk about being married to a man for 13 years before she realized she was queer. Lauren talks in-depth about her realization and discusses what being a part of the LGBTQ+ community means to her.
Lauren talks a bit about being Canadian but spending most of her time in New York, while still being able to go back to Toronto once a year. Laura then asks Lauren about being a size-inclusion activist and a plus-size model. This leads to a discussion about societies beauty standards and how they change over time.
Before they wrap, Lauren talks about how she first got into modeling, and what that was like while being plus-size. Lauren also talks a little bit about her Chinese and Armenian heritage.
