Only One In The Room

Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”. Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you to think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school, or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.

So begins last week’s Facebook post from today’s guest, Juko Holiday. California firefighters have continued to battle more than 700 wildfires in California. Fires, which have burned more than 1 million 35 acres. While evacuation orders have been lifted for some, others are still displaced as more than 272 homes have been damaged or destroyed. Can you imagine losing your home during a pandemic? Where do you go? How do you stay safe? What do you take with you? Juko Holiday is here with us today, speaking to us from her red-cross provided shelter to tell us her story.

Imagine being a white woman, a daughter of the south, and a fundamentalist Christian who gets married and looks forward to raising a family, only to be given discouraging news.

Deb Besinger, writer, dating expert and mother was undaunted when she and her husband were told that it might be difficult to conceive - she always knew she would adopt.

But what would you do if the children you adopted were black and received different treatment than you when they walked down the street? Would you pull up stakes and move to a place where your family might avoid overt racism and prejudice? Imagine packing up your family for a Thanksgiving trip to Mauritius, Africa and deciding to stay and make it your home? Today’s guest, Lucia Brawley and her husband did just that, joining a number of Americans who are moving to The Motherland.

Lucia is a co-founder and the Chief Creative Officer of AMP Global Technologies and executive producer of the two-time Interactive Emmy finalist, "Take Back the Mic: The World Cup of Hip Hop," and “The Mic: Africa." She worked as an actress alongside talents like Viola Davis and Angela Bassett, and for world-class directors, including Oliver Stone and Barry Levinson. She was a political organizer for the Obama presidential campaigns, growing a team of 4 volunteers into 2,000 members and helping Obama win his congressional district by the largest margin in the California primary. A vocal advocate for arts education and other social justice issues, she is a regular contributor to national outlets including CNN.com and the HuffPo, and earned a place atop CNN.com's "Most Popular Op-Eds." Lucia is a graduate of Harvard with a Master's in Acting from the Yale School of Drama. She and her husband are proud parents to two vibrant little girls, ages 7 and 9.
