Only One In The Room

Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”. Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you to think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school, or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.

“The police are the community and the community is the police. If we don’t start recognizing that simple fact, if we don’t start healing – together, we will continue to wake up to the same headlines of unarmed black men being shot, of police officers being ambushed, and of a growing rift between police and the people they’re sworn to protect.”

Today’s guest is police officer, Dr. Obed Magny. Dr. Magny grew up in Boston, Massachusetts where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology from the University of Massachusetts at Boston. Dr. Magny relocated to Sacramento where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Emergency Services Administration from the California State University at Long Beach, and a Doctorate Degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of La Verne. Currently a police officer in the Sacramento Police Department, Dr. Magny works in patrol. Previous assignments included Narcotics, School Resource Officer, Crime Suppression Unit, and the Parole Intervention Team. Dr. Magny also served on the Board of Directors for the Sacramento Police Officers Association (SPOA) for three years.

Imagine growing up bi-racial in a small Georgia town, the daughter of divorced parents, a Scottish/Irish father, and a Japanese mother.

Kelly Nishimoto, self-taught, Los Angeles-based fashion designer, lifestyle pimp, and creator of Cutebootylounge, designed a wedding dress out of trash bags and electrical tape at 13, and eventually launched a full collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

But what would you do if a series of events led to you being offered a job on television, getting pregnant, and being without a home -- all at the same time? Although women are at greater risk for negative consequences following traumatic events, many often hesitate to seek mental health treatment. Survivors often wait years to receive help, while others never receive treatment at all. Untreated posttraumatic symptoms not only have tremendous mental health implications but can also lead to adverse effects on physical health. Female survivors may encounter physical symptoms including headaches, gastrointestinal problems, and sexual dysfunction. Although the mental and physical symptoms of PTSD-stress can be quite debilitating, trauma is often undiagnosed by health professionals due to a lack of training, time, and resources.

In this episode, we’re talking to Melissa Barker, founder, and CEO of The Phoenix Project, a digital community that celebrates healing and authentic connections.

January 2021 marks the ninth month of a pandemic. Drinking (day and otherwise) has skyrocketed, and for people in recovery, relapsing (drinking again after one has set a sobriety date) has too. So just how does one retain or regain their balance in recovery during this perilous time? Today we have my dear, dear friend and woman of the hour, Holly Whitaker.

Holly’s best-selling book, Quit Like A Woman, a memoir/self-help book about her own recovery was released one year ago and the paperback launches this week. Holly is the founder and CEO of Tempest (formerly Hip Sobriety). With years of experience in the fields of healthcare and tech, she created a human-centered recovery modality and virtual platform offering education, community, and support services, in 2014. Holly has been featured in the New York Times, Vogue, and TechCrunch and was named in Inc’s 2019 Female Founders 100 List.

Gwen Ela Is The Only Nurse In The Room Explaining Why The Risk Is Worth The Reward Jan 07, 2021

Now that coronavirus vaccines are being distributed, the first people to get it have become de facto ambassadors for it, reassuring the public that it’s safe. As U.S. states figure out how to roll out the inoculations, some people are wondering whether to get it at all, often because they’re scrolling in online communities where emotional anti-vaxxer anecdotes spread faster than accepted science.

Today we have Gwen Ela, a lac-USC, Registered Nurse. Gwen works in med-surg and lives with her husband and 5-year-old son in Southern California. Not only was Gwen one of the first people to receive her Covid vaccine, she helped to convince her mother (who is also a nurse) to get her vaccine as well.
