    Only One In The Room

Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”. Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you to think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school, or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.

Hispanic Heritage Awareness Month: Ever Gonzalez Is The Only Hispanic Conservative In The Room Sep 21, 2021
    Show notes

What if, after crossing the US border with your mother, you joined the Mormon church and began to reject the clichés associated with immigrants, deciding that handouts were not for you and with hard work, anything was possible for anyone.

Ever Gonzalez, podcaster, and founder of Outlier HQ media and events company, found that his morals and principals were better aligned with more traditional values.

But what if one day there was a cultural reckoning and everywhere you looked people were marching and calling for change? Would you stop and question the conservative ideology that was being publicly challenged? Or would you assure yourself that everyone was getting what they deserved.

    Show notes

The Only One In The Room is extremely proud to partner with 19-year old poet, Valyn Lyric Turner. From time to time, we will be bringing you her phenomenal spoken word poetry. Scott and Laura feel that today’s presentation, Race In The Classroom: Seeing Color could not have come at a better time in our history. Valyn has always found her home on stage performing through theatre, poetry, and songwriting. Soleil Moon Frye Is The Only Child Actor In The Room Who Documented Her Teenage Years Sep 14, 2021
    Show notes

Imagine if, as a teenager, you saved every journal entry, every voicemail and filmed every moment with your friends, including, smoking weed and doing mushrooms, including epic late-night phone calls, including -- their cries for help?

Actor, director, and writer, Soleil Moon Frye, who began her career at age seven as the iconic Punky Brewster, recently released KID 90, a documentary about her teenage years with her friends. Friends that included celebs like Leonardo DiCaprio, Brian Austin Green, Robin Thicke, Stephen Dorff and David Arquette.

But what would you do if twenty years later you revisited that footage and found yourself not only reliving the good times but also seeing things, things you missed before, with new eyes? Would you put it all back in Tupperware for another twenty years? Or would you courageously use it to make a documentary that showed the world what happens to child actors when the cameras stop rolling?

Allison Hong Merrill Is The Only One Who’s Husband Left Her In Under Two Hours Episode 100 Sep 07, 2021
    Show notes

Imagine if as a kid you were chased by your parent with a butcher knife, and instead of intervening, all the other adults just sat around and watched.

Author, Allison Hong Merrill grew up in Taiwan and never felt secure in her home until Mormon missionaries arrived, so she married one, and against her father’s wishes, moved back to Texas with him, thinking he was her knight in shining armor.

But what would you do if after moving to a place where you didn’t know a soul and didn’t speak the language, you came home to find your husband had cleaned out both your apartment and your bank accounts? Would you return to Taiwan and beg your father’s forgiveness? Or would you find a way to not only survive but thrive in this new strange land?
