    Only One In The Room

    Hosted by Laura Cathcart Robbins, a writer and a recovery thriver and survivor, Laura found herself in an all too familiar position. In September 2018, she was the only black woman in the room at Brave Magic, a famed writer’s retreat. After it was over, she wrote about her “only one” experience in The Huffington Post and comments started flooding into her DM. These comments were from people from all races, ethnicities, creeds, and nationalities who had felt “othered”. Laura beautifully interviews a person about their Only One story each episode and addresses as many of those DM’s as possible in the process. In this podcast, you’ll hear raw, vulnerable accounts from people who are, like most of us, just eager to connect. Our hope is that The Only One In The Room will inspire a change of perspective in how we all see and hear each other’s stories. We want you to think twice before judging the person standing next to you at a party, in the pick-up line at school, or in a crowded subway car. This is a podcast for anyone who has ever felt alone in a room full of people – which is to say, that this podcast is for everyone.

    Tim Brown, retired, decorated 20-year FDNY firefighter and a survivor of the 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, lost 93 of his friends on Sept. 11th, including his two best friends.

    So what would you do if you’d survived the most horrific attack ever to take place on US soil? Would you try to forget about it and decide to go on with your life? Or would you spend your time and resources telling your story to make sure that none of us ever forget?

Film work includes Leave No Trace, Sully, Beauty Mark, and Tank Girl. For the past seven years, he has written a Daily Thought about meditation and consciousness that he sends out to subscribers and which he is in the process of organizing into book form. He is also working on another book, The Mythology of Self: Discovering and Changing the Stories We Tell Ourselves. Jeff also makes wet collodion tintypes and ambrotypes in his studio in Studio City.

    Once there was a girl who discovered that while period products seemed to be widely available to everyone, there were still many girls and women who were forced to use trash to absorb their menstrual flow every month.

    Twenty-Three year-old Harvard graduate, Nadya Okamoto founded PERIOD.org at the age of sixteen and in 2020 she co-founded August, a lifestyle brand working to reimagine periods.

    But what would you do if even after all your work and dedication, 4 in 5 US students were missing classes because of lack of access to period products and periods were still the main reason why girls were missing school in developing countries? Would you move on to a cause that made people feel more comfortable? Or would you start posting your period blood on TikTok and demand that the world starts paying attention?

    OB/GYN, and reproductive justice advocate, Dr. Willie Parker, was on his way to work when the decision to overturn Roe V Wade was announced, making it impossible for him to perform an abortion on the patient he was scheduled to see.

    Valyn Lyric Turner is a 19-year-old rising sophomore at Boston University where she double majors in Theatre Arts and Spanish. Valyn has always found her home on stage performing through theatre, poetry, and songwriting. In April of 2018, she was able to share her passion for literature on the national stage as the representative for the state of Georgia in Poetry Out Loud, a poetry recitation contest through the National Endowment for the Arts. Her mission is to inspire, empower, and serve others through her craft.
