One Nation, All Beliefs

One Nation, All Beliefs is a limited podcast series on the separation of church and state as the basis for our most cherished American freedoms. Produced by Brad Onishi at Straight White American Jesus in partnership with Americans United for Separation of Church and State, the series highlights the voices of reproductive rights organizers, education activists, queer Black clergy, trans pastors, and progressive politicos in order to show the ways a strong separation of church and state is the shield that protects everyone’s right to live as themselves and believe as they choose — ensuring freedom without favor and equality without exception.
LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive rights, protecting public schools, and freedom from religion – as well as freedom of religion – they all depend on a wall between church and state.
Because we want an America where:

religion does not dictate public policy;

the government does not tell Americans what to believe or how to practice their faith;

discrimination is not justified under the guise of religion.

Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray is the ninth president of the Unitarian Universalist Association. She was elected in June 2017 to a six-year term after serving congregations in Arizona, Ohio, and Tennessee. After leading the Unitarian Universalist response to Arizona’s anti-immigrant laws in 2010, she became lead organizer for the Arizona Immigration Ministry, among her other activism.

I Am Dying Out Loud May 25, 2023

Dave Warnock was caught up in the Jesus movement of the 70s and lived the bulk of his life as a Charismatic Evangelical, serving as a pastor on three different church staffs.

Following several years of internal struggle, Dave came to the conclusion in 2011 that he no longer believed in a personal God. In 2019 he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), a progressive neurodegenerative disease with an average 3-5 year life expectancy. In early 2023, Dave, along with Bevin Jett and Sheila Hoover, founded I Am Dying Out Loud, a nonprofit organization with the mission to enhance the quality of life by advocating against the unwanted intrusion of religion in the areas of healthcare, dying, and death, and by providing “bucket list” moments for those diagnosed with ALS.

Christian Nationalism in Oklahoma with Prof. Allyson Shortle May 18, 2023

Dr. Shortle is an associate professor at the University of Oklahoma, where she studies group identity in the context of American political behavior. She also serves as a faculty member for Latinx Studies and Women and Gender Studies. She runs OU’s Community Engagement + Experiments Laboratory (CEEL), Oklahoma City’s Community Poll (Exit Poll), and OU’s Democracy Survey of OU freshmen. For fun, she lends research support to organizations seeking to increase civic engagement and improve physical and mental health of their communities.

Dr. Shortle’s new co-authored Cambridge University Press book, The Everyday Crusade: Christian Nationalism in American Politics (2022 – w. Eric L. McDaniel and Irfan Nooruddin), examines the relationship between American religious exceptionalism and prejudicial and antidemocratic attitudes. She is currently extending this line of research to examine the many faces of ethnocultural nationalism (EN) – defining American identity according to ascriptive traits such as race, religion, and gender (w. Ana Bracic and Mackenzie Israel-Trummel).

Trans Minister Alex McNeill on Church, Country, and the Battles Ahead May 18, 2023

Alex is a white, queer, transgender man, an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. Rev. McNeill served as the executive director of More Light Presbyterians for over eight years. There, he empowered faith leaders to welcome LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC neighbors into worship communities and to advocate for justice in their broader secular communities. Alex has worked to elect LGBTQIA+ leaders, advocated for reproductive justice, and won state, national, and denominational legislation affirming and protecting the rights and dignities of queer and trans people. Before earning a Master’s of Divinity from Harvard University, Alex got his start in LGBTQIA+ and reproductive rights activism as an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

The Secular Rabbi: Robert Barr May 11, 2023

Robert B. Barr is the Founding Rabbi of Congregation Beth Adam and OurJewishCommunity (our online initiative). Known for his irreverent and often witty presentation style, Barr is a popular speaker on a wide range of topics including contemporary Jewish thought, religious fundamentalism, and ethics. Barr currently serves on the Faith Advisory Council for Americans United for Separation of Church and State. As well as on the Policy Advisory Committee for Jewish Council for Public Affairs.

The Religious Exemption Accountability Project May 11, 2023

Rev. Naomi Washington-Leapheart May 04, 2023

Rev. Naomi Washington-Leapheart, a daughter of Detroit, is the Director for Faith-Based and Interfaith Affairs for the city of Philadelphia. In this role, she serves as a public facing leader, liaison and subject matter expert for the Mayor’s Office on local and national matters that impact diverse communities of faith. She also manages the Mayor’s Commission on Interfaith Affairs.

Naomi is also an adjunct professor of Theology and Religious Studies at Villanova University, with joint affiliations with the University’s Center for Peace and Justice Education and Africana Studies program.

Naomi was most recently the Faith Work Director for the National LGBTQ Task Force, the country's oldest national LGBTQ justice and equality group. In that role, she coordinated the Task Force's public faith messaging and advocacy and leadership development work in faith communities.

Rachel Laser - President of Americans United for Separation of Church and State May 04, 2023

Rachel joins Brad to discuss the inspiration behind the new commitment to separation of Church and State. She provides a window into what this fight looks like on the ground - from fighting for queer couples to adopt in the Midwest to protecting gay rights in the South to making sure public school kids don't have religion invade their classrooms all over the country.

Rachel Laser is a lawyer, advocate and strategist who has dedicated her career to making our country more inclusive. She has a proven track record of uniting both faith and secular leaders and advocacy organizations to make tangible progress on some of the most important issues of our time. And as a religious minority – she was raised as a Reform Jew – she understands personally how much it matters that our laws treat everyone fairly and equally. She is an advocate for racial justice and has led workshops, given speeches and worked with schools and universities to challenge racism and expose privilege.
