ONE HOT TAKE: Is This Thing On? w/ Sean Burns Jan 16, 2026
    Show notes

This is our NEW RELEASE reviewpodcast, ONE HOT TAKE.

On paper, it’s a familiar midlife recalibration story: work, marriage, identity, creativity. On screen, it plays like a series of almost moments that never quite click into rhythm.

    Synopsis:

As their marriage unravels, Alex faces middle age and divorce, seeking new purpose in the New York comedy scene. Meanwhile, his wife Tess confronts sacrifices made for their family, forcing them to navigate co-parenting and identities.

    Sean Burns

Sean Burns is a film critic for WBUR’s Arts & Culture and a contributing writer at North Shore Movies and Crooked Marquee. He was Philadelphia Weekly’s lead film critic from 1999 through 2013, and worked as a contributing editor at The Improper Bostonian from 2006 until 2014. His reviews, interviews and essays have also appeared in Metro, The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, The Boston Herald, Nashville Scene, Time Out New York, Philadelphia City Paper and RogerEbert.com.

A graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Burns was a recurring guest on the late David Brudnoy’s WBZ 1030 AM radio show, and in 2002 received an award for Excellence in Criticism from the Greater Philadelphia Society of Professional Journalists. Currently a member of the Online Film Critics Society and the Critics Choice Association, he’s also “the most annoyingest person ever,” according to his niece.

ONE HOT TAKE: Nouvelle Vague w/ Stu Coote Jan 16, 2026
    Show notes

This is our NEW RELEASE reviewpodcast, ONE HOT TAKE.

What makes Nouvelle Vague special is Linklater’s confidence in the hang. He understands that revolutions don’t look revolutionary while they’re happening. They look like people standing around, arguing about ideas, borrowing gear, shooting on streets they don’t own, and trusting that something will cohere later.

    Synopsis:

The behind the scenes of the filming of Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless (1960), a landmark of the French New Wave film movement.

    Stu Coote:

The co-host of the (retired) Sinner Files movie podcast is the chief instigator behind our cinematic deep-dive brand.

GUIDE FOR THE FILM FANATIC: “The Shining” with Justin and Laura Khoo Jan 12, 2026
    Show notes

Justin and Laura Khoo’s podcast “Cows in the Field” explores the philosophical, aesthetic, and cultural themes in popular movies, high and low, “good” and “bad,” which aligns them clearly with Danny Peary and GUIDE. Together, we work through Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Stephen King’s bestseller — a polarizing picture, throughout the culture, throughout the years, and even within our four-person conversation.
