Cllctivly: A network to grow Black Genius Apr 29, 2022
    Show notes

Media and pop culture … like HBO’s current series, “We Own this City,” or from two decades ago, “The Wire” … help perpetuate a violent narrative about Baltimore.

But Jamye Wooten intends to reframe the city’s reputation. The nonprofit he created, called: Cllctivly, works to create and fund a network of people doing good, which tells a different story:

“Narrative goes hand in hand with resource mobilization and so narrative is important for us in our work. So we believe that we should be the ones - that folks within our communities should be the ones telling our own stories and making sure we’re highlighting the great work happening here in the city.”

Pass the Mic: What is Asian American identity? Apr 28, 2022
    Show notes

What are the internal and external forces that shape identity? To explore that we Pass the Mic to Filipino American actor and educator Cori Dioquino.

She and psychologist Natalie Hung dig into the complexities of Asian American identity. Then Johns Hopkins Professor Yumi Kim lays out the decades of history and policies that fueled anti-Asian sentiment in the U.S.:

“Not only is Anti-Asian violence not trans-historical, meaning it doesn’t stay the same across time. It takes on different meaning and different significance, and that's part of the reason it persists. Because it evolves, it adapts.”

Data-driven and heart-led: Wes Moore seeks the Democratic nomination for governor Apr 27, 2022
    Show notes

Nonprofit CEO, author, and combat veteran Wes Moore is seeking the Democratic nomination for Maryland governor.

In the wake of the pandemic, Moore says economic issues are a priority: helping families get back to work, at higher wages, and closing the racial wealth gap--as is public safety. In his view, reducing and preventing violence requires investment in community-based work aimed at interrupting violence.

Plus, how would he create public-service jobs for every high-school graduate who wants one?

How the pandemic accelerated nurse burnout Apr 26, 2022
    Show notes

Nurses have been on the pandemic’s frontline, caring for patients during a shocking crisis.

Hopkins professor of nursing and bioethics Cynda Rushton describes the moral scars nurses carry in COVID’s wake, "When we feel as if what we are doing is either causing harm, directly or indirectly, not being able to provide the things we normally would for a patient or their family begins to erode our sense of both identity and our sense of integrity.”

Rushton leads the state’s R3 Resilient Nurses Initiative, aimed at halting burnout and lifting nurses’ well-being. Details about next month's production of 'The Nurse Antigone' here.

Plus, Greg Terry tells of the stress of tending patients, and why he left a hospital to be a travel nurse.

    Jen Michalski's 'You'll Be Fine' Apr 25, 2022
    Show notes

Author Jen Michalski centered her third novel, "You’ll Be Fine," on a magazine writer in her 30’s who’s still carrying baggage from a couple failed love affairs, as she tries to find common ground with her feckless younger brother and deals with a lot of unresolved conflicts with her bohemian mother. And then her mother dies.

Still, Michalski says, she and her editor felt the family was working out the tensions in a predictable way:

“I began to think, what sort of monkey wrench can I throw into their relationship. And just out of the blue this character named Johanna stepped in, like clearly as she walked into the door of my mind. And was like, ‘hello’ and I was like, ‘hello!’ And then the novel just became completely transformed.”

The unique gift of a child with autism Apr 22, 2022
    Show notes

One out of 44 children in the US is affected by autism. The diagnosis can be scary for parents, but the growing array of resources and support has changed the landscape for those living with autism, and for their families.

Taya Dunn Johnson, vice president of the board of The Autism Society of Baltimore Chesapeake, talks about how raising a son with autism has opened her eyes to honor differences in all people. She’s devoted to autism advocacy, and works to dispel myths:

“If you’ve met one person with autism, that’s it. You’ve just met one person with autism. No two individuals present exactly the same way.”

Working for clear water, clean air in Baltimore Apr 21, 2022
    Show notes

Earth Day is a clarion call to care for the planet. Where can that attention be focused in Baltimore?

We talk to Andrew Heyes, who teaches at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, about how heavy metals make their way into the Chesapeake Bay and break down in the salty water - poisoning wildlife. Watch his recent presentation on metals in urban estuaries.

Then, we hear from Shashawnda Campbell and Carlos Sanchez of the South Baltimore Community Land Trust. Campbell sees the need for collective action to save the planet as urgent, "This is a life or death situation. So I think that we can’t undo climate change, we can’t recycle our way out of it, we can’t compost our way out of it. It is what it is right now, right? But what we can do is stop the damages that we keep doing to it."

Maryland Democratic gubernatorial candidate Doug Gansler on addressing crime, opioid overdoses Apr 20, 2022
    Show notes

Former Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler, a Democrat,is running for governor.

Along with expanding mass transit and supporting tech entrepreneurs, at the top of his priorities is fighting crime. Gansler plans to hire a thousand more police and to place resource officers in schools.

He also wants to keep more people out of jail by creating more alternative court dockets for drug charges.

Gansler says his experience, like holding banks accountable during the 2010 foreclosure crisis, prepared him for this moment, "It's that kind of understanding of how the government works that we need to have to rebuild after Covid, rebuild our economy with a focus on business. I’m an unabashed pro-business, pro-public safety Democrat."
