Bowie Mayor Tim Adams on his run for state comptroller Jun 06, 2022
    Show notes

Three decades before he was elected Bowie’s first Black mayor three years ago, Tim Adams started a government-contracting company that now employs hundreds of workers. He contends his experience in business, procurement, and overseeing a municipality give him insight into making sure businesses owned by minority members, women and people with disabilities get a fair shake in state contracts and investing state pension funds.

We ask Adams about his plans for changing how Maryland collects corporate taxes and what kinds of investments it makes.

Learn more about Mayor Adams' campaign here.

Truth and reconciliation for Howard Cooper Jun 03, 2022
    Show notes

Howard Cooper was just 15 when he was lynched at the Towson jail in 1885. Historians say the mob feared the Supreme Court would void his conviction by an all-white jury … for assault of a white girl.
Why will the Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission hold a hearing tomorrow on Cooper’s murder? Commission vice chair Charles Chavis says the pattern of racial terror … stretches to ten African-Americans gunned down in Buffalo, New York this month.

“We have to recognize the importance of valuing and validating the historical trauma and the truths that Black communities have suffered. And we have to recognize that these are not one-offs, anomalies; this is a part of a legacy and a system.”

The healing power of music Jun 02, 2022
    Show notes

Music can soothe, motivate and stir feelings. Can music heal? Dr. Alexander Pantelyat, who runs the Johns Hopkins Center for Music and Medicine, develops therapies and conducts research with patients who have Parkinson’s disease and other ailments. He says it’s not one-size-fits all, and can be tailored to each patient just like other medications.

Plus, Senior Music Therapist Kerry Devlin, who works with adults and children, says that using music for healing may not be the right fit for everyone, but for many:

“It’s an experience that brings something different into their care. It feels really different from some of the other therapies that they move through because of the ways in which it holds space for their experiences, their music and their personhood.”

Archeology at Baltimore’s Historic Upton Mansion Jun 01, 2022
    Show notes

At 184 years old, Upton Mansion in West Baltimore is a rare example of the Greek Revival style. It’s about to be redeveloped--and to prepare, archeologists explored the site last spring, uncovering artifacts to piece together the lives of people who used to live there. University of Maryland anthropologist Adam Fracchia describes what it takes to preserve this history. Tammie Gillums, an Army veteran pursuing a second career in archeology, says the field school taught her why preparation is a priority.

Will Buffalo and Uvalde spur action on gun violence? May 31, 2022
    Show notes

The nation is united in grief after mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde.

Last week, President Biden called for change, "I am sick and tired of it. We have to act. And don’t tell me we can’t have an impact on this carnage."

The Gun Violence Archive counts more than 200 mass shootings in the U.S. this year. Will recent tragedies spur action?

Daniel Webster co-directs the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions. We ask what tactics have proved to reduce deaths and how policies that vary state to state cause vulnerabilities.

Then, turning agony into action. Elaine Arndt, deputy leader of the Maryland chapter of Moms Demand Action, talks about work to strengthen Maryland’s gun laws. Ardnt hosted a panel with Baltimore survivors of gun violence in March. Watch here.

How the Baltimore Military Muster creates 'camaraderie and connection' May 30, 2022
    Show notes

On Memorial Day, as we remember men and women who gave their lives in military service, we also consider efforts to help veterans re-integrating into civilian life. We speak with Shanita Burch, who oversees the VA Maryland Health Care System’s Community Resource and Referral Center, located at the Baltimore VA Annex. Tyrone Johnson, a U.S. Army veteran, went from homeless to living in his own apartment with the help of the center. Learn more about housing assistance here. Check out the the US Department of Labor’s Veterans' Employment & Training Service program, which offers job preparation to veterans, service members transitioning home, and military spouses.

Then, Katie Kilby founded the Baltimore Military Muster to bring veterans together. Board member Michael Desmond describes the isolation he felt returning from Marine Corps deployment, "Everything looked familiar but the people were all different. And so I was kind of restarting my life and just didn’t know anybody.”

Since we recorded this interview in November, the Baltimore Military Muster acquired a lease for a building in the city’s Brooklyn neighborhood and launched a capital campaign with the goal of opening next spring. The Baltimore Military Muster’s next meet-up will take place next Tuesday, June 7th, at 6:30 pm at Checkerspot Brewing Company.

'Black Boy Smile:' D. Watkins' memoir in moments May 27, 2022
    Show notes

    D. Watkins is tired of the lies. Lies about being tough, about not feeling pain … or loss … or rejection.

In his latest book, ‘Black Boy Smile: A Memoir in Moments,’ he shows how he learned to face those lies and push through to the truth. He hopes everyone, especially young Black men and boys, find that strength from his stories:

“I want them to understand that we all have the power to write our own scripts. I want them to understand that even if you’re from a rough environment, you still deserve a happy ending, you deserve to be loved, you deserve people to care about you and you deserve to care about other people.”

Optimism as Baltimore gears up for the summer tourism season May 26, 2022
    Show notes

How much of Baltimore’s economy depends on tourism? As the summer season gets started this weekend, Al Hutchinson, president and CEO of Visit Baltimore, discusses reenergizing the city’s hospitality and tourism industries. “Based on the trend line to date, we’re trending up,” he says. “So if we can achieve that 27 million in visitors at the end of the summer of 2022, I believe that’s a good news story for Baltimore.”

Check out the Visit Baltimore calendar of upcoming events in the city. Details about the Baltimore By Baltimore event here.

Then, how are local business leaders recovering from the pandemic and preparing for summer? Bob Haislip, general manager of the Royal Sonesta Harbor Court, discusses changes in travelers’ booking habits, and Lesley Malin, producing executive director of the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, tells us how theater is bouncing back.
