OM Backroads Ep:55 Flip Side. The Story of Billy Milligan Nov 28, 2024

Show notes

Hello and welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries: Backroads. In Flip Side. The Story of Billy Milligan, we dive deep into the incredible and unsettling story of Billy Milligan — a man whose life became a landmark case in the study of dissociative identity disorder (formerly known as multiple personality disorder). Born in 1955, Milligan's case captured the world's attention when he was arrested for a series of violent crimes in the 1970s, only to later reveal that he had 24 distinct personalities, each with their own memories, behaviors, and identities.

In this story, we unravel the complexity of Billy's life and mind. From his traumatic childhood to his time spent in psychiatric hospitals, this episode examines the intersection of mental illness, criminal justice, and the human psyche. Was Billy Milligan a victim, a criminal, or both? And what does his story tell us about the limits of the law and the understanding of mental health?

Join us as we explore the fascinating, often haunting, story of Billy Milligan — a man with many faces, but who, in the end, may have only been searching for one true identity.
