    172. Unpacking the Comedic Genius & Nightstand Debris of Becky Robinson Jan 10, 2022
    Show notes

It was nearly one year ago that the immensely talented Becky Robinson first graced this podcast with her presence. Since that time, her stardom has only (deservedly) shot upward. Following in the footsteps of Gilda Radner, Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, and Kristen Wiig, Becky is the next best thing to happen to comedy. We talk about how she’s reckoning with her meteoric rise, taking time to breathe and assess her wins, the ups and downs of being back out in the world, and getting sick of White Claw.

    171. Cutting the Collective Some Slack with Dani Beinstein Jan 03, 2022
    Show notes

There is something going on in the universe, that’s for sure. Uncertainty is all around us. For once, wouldn’t it be nice to start a new year with downhill momentum, coasting into confident growth, success, and enlightenment? This conversion unlocks that lofty possibility.

The intuitive sherpa on our journey into the new year is none other than Dani Beinstein, a previous OTR guest and fan favorite. She’s part navigator, part explorer, and part homebase for all of us. She’s here to help lighten the load as we head into 2022 and to let us know that it’s okay to live in the gray area.

    170. Best of 2021: If You're Cultish & You Know It, Clap Your Hands with Amanda Montell Dec 27, 2021
    Show notes

Can you believe it? 2022 is already knocking at the front door. After everything we went through collectively in 2020, this year brought on some amazing conversations as people felt the urge to open up and express themselves and their new truths. We round out the year by revisiting two of our best episodes, continuing with Amanda Montell.

Sometimes, big questions need to be asked. Who are we as humans? What is our intrinsic value to one another? Why do we want humans by our side? Is it out of desire, obligation, validation, or true necessity? And, what does Amanda Montell have to do with any of this?

In a recent interview with Salon Magazine, Amanda breaks down the way that cultish rhetoric causes us not to empathize with one another or see others as human. We see people as “other” if they don’t align perfectly with our rapidly narrowing ideologies. It’s important to know the cultish language that makes us feel so confident in our own beliefs and that everyone else’s are not only wrong, but morally inferior.

    169. Best of 2021: Putting the Endo in Friendo with Jessica Murnane Dec 20, 2021
    Show notes

It’s the end of another year, and what a turn around the sun it has been. After everything we went through collectively in 2020, this year brought on some amazing conversations as people felt the urge to open up and express themselves and their new truths. We round out 2021 by revisiting two of our best episodes, starting with Jessica Murnane.

Periods are no walk in the park for anyone. But for those not dealing with the agony that is the dreaded “E” word – endometriosis – Aunt Flo’s visit is likely a walk in the park by comparison. Regulating your hormones is already enough of a challenge, often requiring a cabal of gynecologists, a couple of naturopaths, and friends of friends with similar symptoms to get any sort of grip on what’s going on. And all of that’s without our friendo, endo.

Women muscle through a lot, but that shouldn’t have to be the expectation. That’s where your ally through endometriosis, Jessica, comes in. Beloved author, speaker, and consultant, she helps women break through the misinformation that plagues the healthcare system to help those living with endo to have more control and feel better in their bodies.

    168. Rising Up and Advocating For Love with Shelly Tygielski Dec 13, 2021
    Show notes

Shelly Tygielski is a force of nature in human form. She’s squarely on the good side of history when it comes to her work, integrity, and commitment to making the world a better place. Equal parts waterfall, windstorm, and rainbow, Shelly is the author of Sit Down to Rise Up: How Radical Self-Care Can Change the World and Founder of the global grassroots organization Pandemic of Love.

As she used radical self-care practices to manage a serious chronic health issue, she had an epiphany: Finding true health and peace is not a solo endeavor, but one that lives in connection with others. Shelly shares her evolution from a Jerusalem-born child of traditional Jewish parents to a middle-class American suburban youth who questioned her faith to a young executive in corporate America.

    167. In the Business of Beauty with Rachel Brown Dec 06, 2021
    Show notes

One of the first hires at SkinOwl was not an administrative assistant or bookkeeper, it was a publicist who knew that public image is a long-term marriage, not a one night stand – that one day someone will tell your story and everything will change. And that day did come. An article titled “The Woman Obsessed with Mangosteen” by author Rachel Brown resulted in the first breakout success of SkinOwl.

Rachel now serves as the editor-in-chief of Beauty Independent, the bible of all things beauty and business. She’s a true champion of not only getting the story but getting it right, too. She’s honest, fair, and celebrates the human experience. We dive into why she got into journalism, her desire to make a dent in the world, how to reconcile writing about beauty while the world is burning down, and good advice for young journalists.

    165. Meg Quinn Is Moving With the Cheese Nov 22, 2021
    Show notes

Meg Quinn did not come to play in her current chapter of life – unless you count playing with food. Growing up in LA, having a close circle of friends to hold you up when life beat you down was a necessity, and I count myself very lucky to consider Meg within that circle. She’s a creative director, food stylist, and founder of Ain’t Too Proud To Meg, a destination for drool-worthy spreads and entertaining tips meant to inspire creativity in the kitchen. Meg is an artist, and food is her canvas. We talk about love and loss, cultivating deep friendships, and the art of food presentation.

    164. Holiday Boundary Setting and Vulnerability with Jordan Pickell Nov 15, 2021
    Show notes

While the holiday season is painted by the latest ads as a time of joy, wonder, and of course spending, the reality of it for many is that it is also a time of trauma. Family functions might have you expecting comments about weight, relationship status, and household COVID protocols – not fun. Boundaries are bound to melt away as the pressures and obligations of family facetime override personal needs, leaving us feeling exhausted and resentful.

Both the good and the ugly can exist at once, and it’s important to know how to accentuate the positive while mitigating the negative. Luckily, Jordan Pickell is the woman to help us do just that. She’s built a life’s work studying the trauma that comes up in our various relationships, and she’s an expert on helping people feel their feelings and take on those hard conversations that we all feel grateful for having, nonetheless.
