Back in August, I had the honor of having LA-based yogi + mantra mentor, Ava Johanna in the studio to record one of my most memorable podcasts. A few weeks later, Ava asked me to come on her podcast, the Alchemized Life and talk about SkinOwl - the twists and turns, the challenges, and my incredibly frustrating journey with cystic acne which eventually spawned my decision to create a skincare line that would help other people as much as it helped me. What I loved most about this podcast was that it covered a lot and connected the dots. Ava has a way of making you feel so incredibly comfortable in your own skin as you open up about the hard stuff. For example, how my acne insecurities turned into dating insecurities. How my laser focus on building a business was the catalyst to missing red flags in my first marriage, ultimately leading to my divorce. And how my longing to leave a mark on the world brought out an entrepreneurial side I never thought I had. For these reasons and more, I wanted to share this conversation with all of you today. Because in the end, we are always the product of our entire journey, the cumulation of all of our decisions, and I couldn’t be more in awe of what a trip life really is. It’s Episode 55 and we feel ALIVE! Partly because it rhymes, but mostly because my guest today is the brilliantly courageous and inspirational journalist, Lexy Lebsack! Lexy is the Senior Editor, as well as Correspondent and Producer of Refinery 29, a powerful online publication source for fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. She has also written for Vox, Women’s Wear Daily, Los Angeles Magazine, and more, not to mention having made appearances on Dr. Oz, KTLA Morning News, MTV, and the list goes on. Lexy’s resume speaks for itself, but my personal fascination with her and her work is what excites me even more about sitting down with her today. I have been drawn to pieces such as “Environmental Awakening in the Beauty Industry,” and others due to Lexy’s brave navigation and communication of highly interesting and often breathtaking elements of the industry. On an even more personal note, Lexy has investigated and written on the truths behind synthetic mica which Skinowl uses to create that delicate shimmer we all know and love. Lexy’s findings reveal the very sad truth of unjust child labor practices involved in the mining of natural mica, and have been a resource for me in ensuring that Skinowl is only using both environmentally safe and morally just products.
