Donor Advised Funds and B Charitable, with Jonathan Shugart Nov 18, 2021
    Show notes

Visiting with Jonathan Shugart of B Charitable, an Alabama based nonprofit corporation. We talk about Donor Advised Funds and their benefit to both the donor and the recipients. B Charitable is a tax-exempt entity whose sole purpose is to house charitable gifting funds for individuals. In addition, the platform provides donors with financial peace of mind knowing that the funds collected on B Charitable can only then be donated to public charities. Different from other crowdfunding platforms, donations can not be spent by the individual collecting the donations.

Jonathan also turns the table and questions Mickey about the Nonprofit Snapshot.

Putting your Nonprofit on the Map, with Pace PR Nov 11, 2021
    Show notes

Mickey visits with Annie Scranton of Pace Public Relations to talk about nonprofit visibility and community building.

According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS), there are over 1.5 million nonprofit organizations registered in the United States. With so many nonprofits, many of them trying to achieve the same goal, it can be challenging to gain visibility, build your community, and increase your donor base if your audience doesn't even know you exist. Using her client Concern World Wide U.S. as a case study, Annie dives into why every nonprofit should build a thought leadership program for their organization, how they can achieve it, and how this strategy put Concern Worldwide U.S. on the map. We also discuss what PR strategies you can incorporate to help you successfully pitch yourself to the media, how to leverage local press to garner larger media coverage, and how this strategy can be used to build your community and increase your donor base.

Green Light Fund Detroit, with Rishi Moudgil Oct 26, 2021
    Show notes

GreenLight Fund is a growing national network of cities that lifts opportunities for children, youth, and families experiencing poverty. Each local site such as Detroit runs a community-centered process to:

    • Elevate critical priorities for residents facing barriers to social and economic mobility
    • Select and replicate one innovative, proven national program annually that complements the existing landscape
    • Invest in significant, measurable outcomes that are desired across sectors and neighborhoods
    • Galvanize local support to maximize social impact and long-term sustainability

GreenLight Fund Detroit has specifically focused on building power through a racial equity lens while launching effective programming locally. As the founding executive director, Rishi Moudgil is responsible for building these coalitions and empowering local leadership to collectively achieve the desired goals. GreenLight Fund builds power with residents and local stakeholders to decide what focus areas and programming are focused on within the community. A key example is their Resident Advisory Council, which pays local residents with lived experiences with poverty to advise on investments.

Investment Philosophy, with Sean Hale Oct 19, 2021
    Show notes

A bonus episode on ethical, values-based investing for nonprofits. Mickey talks with Sean Hale of Sean Hale Consulting to briefly discuss the issue of investment philosophies. An investment philosophy is comprised of the organization’s high-level investment beliefs. These principles are a reflection of the organization’s culture and should transcend committee and staff members. A well-structured investment program features an investment philosophy that informs each portfolio’s investment policy.

Inflation Proof Your Nonprofit, with Sean Hale Oct 18, 2021
    Show notes

Mickey talks with Sean Hale of Sean Hale Consulting to dissect the issue of inflation, and talk about things nonprofits can do to protect the buying power of their reserved funds. This conversation stems from Sean's recent blog post:

    https://www.seanhale.org/blog/dont-let-inflation-wipe-out-your-cash-surplus

Does your nonprofit have more money in the bank than you need to cover day-to-day operations? If so, rising prices across the economy, AKA inflation, could significantly reduce the value of your nest egg. Please don’t allow your nonprofit’s hard-earned savings to go up in smoke.
