Make sure to head over to Jamel's YouTube channel and follow him there to see all the amazing reaction videos to the bands we all love like The Grateful Dead, Phish, Goose, and many, many more!

Karina Rykman - The World Is Her Oyster Jan 06, 2022

Show notes

No Simple Road starting 2022 strong with Karina Rykman as our guest !

In 2016, Karina joined Marco Benevento's band on bass, replacing Dave Dreiwitz (Ween /Joe Russo's Almost Dead). In the many U.S. tours, trips to Japan and the UK since then, Karina has developed a permanent and powerful presence in the band, playing headlining shows, festival sets, and opening for bands such as Vulfpeck, Dispatch, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Guster, and many more.

Aside from her gigs with Benevento, Karina’s musical résumé has almost grown too large to keep track of, but includes highlights we’d be remiss to exclude: a performance on the Today Show with Julia Michaels, a now-famous soundcheck at Madison Square Garden with Phish, playing in the backing band (in front of Howard Stern and co. at Radio City Music Hall) on America’s Got Talent with a flame-spewing helmet on her head, gigs with the Everyone Orchestra alongside members of moe., The Disco Biscuits, Soulive, Robert Randolph, + many more) and finally, the formation of her own band.

We talk with Karina about growing up living in Manhattan and moving to the country for quarantine, how she's gathered her super friends to create her band, how being busy and having everything stop affected her, what it feels like to get back out playing shows, her most embarrassing tour story and a whole lot more!

Lone Tree & NSR 2021 Year End Recap Dec 31, 2021

Show notes

This week you're getting two for the price of one! We start the episode with Lone Tree! Lone Tree is the rock band you never expected. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, this group of 5 international teens formed in 2016 to create a high-energy, powerful sound that is both contemporary while firmly rooted in their influences from classic rock, funk, reggae, and the legacy of great, live music.

For the first 4 years, the band was named REFUGE which represented what they have always been about: an escape from shallow, inauthentic music. Originally meant as a joke, it ended up symbolizing their drive for social progress as well as their origins as “development kids”.

Then something changed during the pandemic. 4 years together developed their skill and creativity, but being hit with the biggest challenge imaginable helped determine their identity and purpose as a band.

We talk with Teresa and Patric from the band about what it is like for them expat, how being brother and sister has helped them mature musically, what the mission of Lone Tree is, some of their experiences dealing with juggling regular life and making music, some lessons learned through traveling around the globe, their desire to express themselves through an entire album, what music has influenced them, and a ton more!

SINGLE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE INTERVIEW: 'One Season' - by Lone Tree

Then, Aaron, Melanie, & Apple get into their 2021 recap and dig into the issues of dealing with depression, mental health through the pandemic, their hopes for the future of No Simple Road into 2022, and their favorite episodes of the past year!

Paul Hoffman Of Greensky Bluegrass - A Monumental Holiday Dec 23, 2021

Show notes

Happy Holidaze No Simple Road Family! We are so stoked to have Paul Hoffman of Greensky Bluegrass as our guest on the show this week! Greensky has ushered us back into live music in 2021 and we thought there would be no better Holiday gift than to have one of them on the show for Christmas!

Since their 2000 formation in Kalamazoo, MI, the quintet—Anders Beck [dobro], Michael Arlen Bont [banjo], Dave Bruzza [guitar], Mike Devol [upright bass], and Paul Hoffman [mandolin]—have unassumingly progressed into a phenomenon on their own terms with the undying support of a devout audience. Rolling back and forth across North America on successive tours, they recently sold out 3 nights at Red Rocks, a feat unheard of in their genre.

During 2019, All For Money marked their second #1 debut on the Billboard Top Bluegrass Albums Chart and third straight Top 3 entry. They’ve also earned critical acclaim from Billboard, Parade, NPR, and Rolling Stone who hailed them as “representing the genre for a whole new generation.”

We talk with Paul about finding the things that matter most while coming through the darkness, re-evaluating the things in our lives, creating the new album 'Stress Dreams', how Greensky's music became what it is today through the expression of its members, how things on the road look in 2021 and how that feels, and a whole lot more!

Bill Payne Of Little Feat - Rising Up Dec 09, 2021

Show notes

We are extremely honored to have Bill Payne of Little Feat as our guest on No simple Road this week! Payne, who co-founded Little Feat with the late, great Lowell George 35 years ago, has been Little Feat’s keyboardist – and its pilot – throughout the band’s existence, writing and singing such beloved classics as "Oh Atlanta," "Day or Night," "Time Loves a Hero“ and ”Gringo,“ while ”steering a ship that was rudderless," as he puts it. He’s also contributed to hundreds of records as a sideman. The list of the artists Payne has recorded with is as lengthy as a small-town telephone book, ranging from Jackson Browne to Beck to Jimmy Buffett – and that’s just some of the "B"s.

As you can guess Bill has no shortage of stories to tell and we get down to business immediately in this wonderful conversation. We talk about creating the new single 'When All Boats Rise', getting the band back together, leaving The Doobie Brothers to rejoin Little Feat, how it feels to be going back to his musical roots after all these years away, and so much more!

Memphissippi Sounds - At The Crossroads Dec 01, 2021

Show notes

We are so excited to have Damion "Yella P" Pearson from Memphissippi Sounds on No Simple Road this week! One fated summer night in 2017 the paths of two uniquely gifted and talented Memphis musicians aligned in a club on Beale Street. Cameron Kimbrough, grandson of Junior Kimbrough and native of the famed Mississippi hill country, brought his raw, stripped-down rhythms from the fresh, open air of Potts Camp, MS, to the crowded room. As the audience took in Kimbrough’s beats from the drums, they were blessed by the powerful and mesmerizing voice of Damion “Yella P” Pearson’s harmonica. Kimbrough had grown up hearing the blues from his grandfather’s juke joint, and later taught himself to play.

Yella P. was also self-taught on the harmonica, first picking it up at age 13 and honing his style while listening to the blues on Beale Street.

Yella P takes us to school on the difference between 'Hill Country' Blues and 'Memphis Style' Blues, how Sesame Street was his inspiration for playing the harp, how he knew he was supposed to be playing with Cameron, what it was like recording in legendary Sun Studios, and a whole lot more!

Ethan Miller Of Howling Rain - Spinning The Dharma Wheel Nov 09, 2021

Show notes

We're stoked this week to have Ethan Miller of Howlin Rain as our guest on No Simple Road this week! Over nearly 20 years, Howlin Rain may have become the quintessential independent American rock ’n roll band: a steam-spitting Hydra of cranked guitars, kicking asphalt dust through a kaleidoscoping travelogue of desert motels and dives, volleying forth transmissions of sci-fi poetry from the blacktop veins of this cracked and aching country. Now, in America 2021, capping these strangest and sorest of times, the band returns with The Dharma Wheel, a six-track, 52-minute dive into a joyous fantasy realm of exaggerated present.

We catch up with Ethan for a conversation about the evolving sound of Howlin Rain, creating the new album 'The Dharma Wheel', his decision to add keyboard wizard Adam MacDougall to the mix, how we can strive to not be like the insects, how he feels now that he's able to get back at it on the road, ways to be a little more gentle with ourselves, and a whole lot more!
