    Show notes

Bristol City Council confirmed a second, separate cyberattack on Southville Primary School, this time with records exported from its management information system Arbor, the UK's most popular school MIS. The council believes the same attackers behind an IT network breach last month carried out this one too.

E-Rate Comment Window Closes as Character.AI Files Bankruptcy Oct 13, 2026
    Show notes

The public comment period on the FCC's review of E-Rate closed today, with thousands of filings warning that eliminating the 30-year-old program would shift broadband costs onto local taxpayers; E-Rate delivered $10.5 billion to districts from 2021-2025.

Character.AI, an AI companion chatbot many districts already restrict, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware amid child-safety lawsuits and state enforcement actions, with Disney ($DIS) making a $20 million opening bid for certain IP in the court-supervised sale.

Google began rolling out a new "Skills" feature to the Gemini app, continuing its plan to retire customizable "Gems"; Gems inside Google Classroom and Gemini-LTI-connected LMS tools won't be retired before June 1, 2027, though skills don't yet sync between the Gemini app and Workspace.

Fairplay's AI Vetting Policy as ClassLink Links Outcomes Oct 08, 2026
    Show notes

Children's advocacy group Fairplay released a model Student-First AI Policy to help school districts vet AI tools before classroom use, citing research linking student AI use to weaker learning outcomes.

Single sign-on provider ClassLink launched Insights, a new K‑12 analytics system pairing edtech usage data with student assessment results, priced at $2 per user per year.

Edsby introduced Destinations, a competency-based assessment and reporting system unveiled at the FullScale Symposium, helping districts catalog learning evidence and track student progress against local standards.

Student behavior platform Minga acquired RTI Scheduler, a flex and intervention scheduling tool, months after a $65 million growth investment to expand across U.S. districts.

ChatGPT's Teen Mode Called Unsafe; Easthampton Schools Hacked Oct 07, 2026
    Show notes

Common Sense Media's Youth AI Safety Institute tested over 4,000 prompts and found ChatGPT's "Teen Mode" fails to flag suicide and self-harm signals and poses an "unacceptable risk" for users under 18; age-verification also failed to trigger teen settings reliably. OpenAI disputes the findings.

Easthampton Public Schools in Massachusetts shut down its network after discovering suspicious activity, bringing in forensic investigators while keeping classes open using manual systems and ParentSquare for family communication.

The Schools, Health and Libraries Broadband Coalition opened its AnchorNets 2026 conference in Arlington, Virginia, as the FCC's comment window on a proposal to limit or end E-Rate funding closes October 13 — a program that benefits roughly 96% of U.S. public schools.

SC Education Cyberattack as Nelnet Acquires India's Entab Oct 06, 2026
    Show notes

South Carolina's Department of Education is restoring its education savings account program after hackers impersonated the agency and ClassWallet to try to steal vendor banking data, leaving some vendors unpaid — the second security incident in the state this week after Frontline Education's delayed breach disclosure.

Oklahoma's Education Department says AI cheating-detection tools are too unreliable to trust and is instead pushing districts toward assignment-level AI policies and rating scales as the state's new AI-in-education law takes effect.

Nebraska's Nelnet ($NNI) has acquired India-based edtech software maker Entab, whose CampusCare ERP and LMS platform serves over 1,000 schools and 1.5 million students across India; Entab keeps its name but customers should expect support and roadmap changes.

YouTube, Gemini Pulled as Vermont District Defies Ransom Oct 05, 2026
    Show notes

Thirteen organizations sent an open letter to the 150 largest U.S. school districts urging them to immediately disable YouTube and Gemini AI on school-issued devices, citing over 1,000 districts already suing YouTube and a "high risk" rating for Gemini from Common Sense Media. Alphabet ($GOOGL) owns both products.

Vermont's Slate Valley Unified Union School District is refusing to pay a ransom after a cyberattack; the group Kairos claims to hold 700+ gigabytes of student and employee data and is threatening to leak it.

Google ($GOOGL) began rolling out a new "skills" system in Workspace for Education, the first step toward retiring its custom "Gems" chatbot feature, with the Gemini app following October 13 and existing Gems moving to Settings by November 17.

Brazilian education giants Cogna and YDUQS surged roughly 11-12% on renewed merger talk, while Nerdy ($NRDY) fell 10.5% to extend a multi-week slide after an analyst downgrade.
