    Native Land Pod

In the spirit of the last stanza of the Black National Anthem, we rise from the past, rooted deeply in the soil of ancestral struggles, to build a home, to claim our space. On Native Land Pod, Angela Rye, Bakari Sellers, and Andrew Gillum guide us through the political landscape, wielding insights and unapologetic analysis, unraveling the threads that connect Black Americans and marginalized communities to a place they courageously call home.

In each episode, Angela, Bakari, and Andrew embark on a journey of reflection, taking stock of the news of the week and the country’s road to the polls.

Join us each week as we navigate the dance between past and present, weaving a narrative of hope, empowerment, and the unyielding strength that defines the journey to reclaim ‘Native Land.’ This isn’t just news analysis; it’s a movement, a conversation, and a testament to the power of those who dare to rebuild and redefine the meaning of home.

Who is Rodney Taylor? | Angela Rye SoloPod Jul 23, 2025
    Show notes

Angela Rye interviews Rodney Taylor’s fiancée, Mildred Pierre.

Rodney Taylor didn’t know he was undocumented until he was 17. Earlier this year, I.C.E surrounded his car and arrested him in front of his family. They told him that he’ll be deported back to Liberia without seeing a judge or receiving a hearing, even though he hasn’t been back to Liberia since he was two years old. At 46, he lives in Georgia where he works as a barber. Taylor is a father of seven children who he shares with his fiancée, Mildred. They were engaged shortly before his arrest.

This is not the first time that Rodney Taylor has had his life wrongly turned upside down by the justice system. His previous pardoned conviction is how he ended up arrested by ICE this time around...

    What Epstein’s Really Exposing Jul 17, 2025
    Show notes

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum cut through the NOISE.

EVERYONE is talking about Jeffrey Epstein’s “client list,” an alleged list of rich and powerful people who molested children trafficked to them by the billionaire, Epstein. Trump’s attorney general, Pam Bondi, seems to have gone back on the Trump campaign’s promise to release the client list. Now, MAGA world is torn. Some are choosing to trust their dear orange leader while others are bucking Trump’s orders to fall in line, and continuing to pursue the release of the list. This is one of the most important political issues to MANY MAGA voters.

And that’s the whole point: is this media cycle about Epstein a big distraction? What might it be distracting us from? As we look ahead to the midterms, some Democrats see this rift in MAGA’s base as an opportunity. Our hosts have some words of warning…

And of course we’ll hear from you! If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.

We are 474 days away from the midterm elections.

The Truth of the 1967 Newark Rebellion | Angela Rye SoloPod Jul 15, 2025
    Show notes

Angela Rye in conversation with Congresswoman LaMonica McIver. McIver has put forward a resolution in the House honoring the victims of the 1967 Newark Rebellion, which she says the city is “still recovering from.” The congresswoman tells us about her new bill AND some of the impacts she expects from Trump’s budget.

Congresswoman McIver is also facing assault charges from Trump’s DOJ tied to an incident at an ICE detention center earlier this year, the same incident that saw Mayor Ras Baraka arrested on charges that were quickly dropped. The Congresswoman says the charges against her are similarly “politically motivated.”

    Midterms Ain’t Midterming! | MiniPod Jul 11, 2025

At NLP we countdown to the 2026 midterm elections at the end of every episode. Rent Is High, Rights Are Low Jul 10, 2025
    Show notes

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum cover a VERY important topic: housing and financial literacy. We’re doing some hardcore adulting today y’all.

Why is it so hard to buy a home these days? How do we build wealth for a down payment–or anything for that matter? These questions may sound dry but the answers as to how we got into this housing crisis are INVALUABLE. They’ll include some advice and personal stories from our hosts (and guest) on how you can secure your finances and get your life. PLUS stories and tips on how to navigate systemic inequities when it comes to things like securing a loan.

Our guest, Elizabeth Booker Houston, is an influencer and political commentator with a Juris Doctorate (scholarly legal mastermind) and a Masters in public health. In 2017, she relocated to Washington, DC to serve in the US Food and Drug Administration. In the years since, she has combined her love of politics, law, science, and comedy into a second career as a political standup comedienne, writer, and content creator. You can find Elizabeth @bookersquared on all platforms.

And our hosts answer a couple of fun questions all about TV shows and books submitted by YOU, our audience.

The Budget is a Weapon and We’re the Target Jul 03, 2025
    Show notes

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum grapple with the proposed federal budget. Trump’s “big beautiful” budget is poised to be the largest cut to the social safety net in generations, and the largest transfer of wealth from low income to high income Americans EVER.

Millions of Americans will lose health coverage and access to SNAP or food stamps. Countless other federal programs are being cut while the budget for the military and mass deportation adds hundreds of billions of dollars, and tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans are extended. How do we respond?

Funding for research, especially medical research into diseases like Sickle Cell that disproportionately affect the Black community, has already faced cuts. The Trump administration continues to end programs that could be construed as “DEI,” which in effect is any program aimed at helping the Black community.

The verdict is in for Sean “Diddy” Combs and it seems like the prosecution over reached. He was accused of and charged with some heinous acts for sure. But anytime a prominent Black man is attacked by the justice system, it can bring up some complicated emotions.

And of course we’ll hear from you! If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.
