136: Mauled with Jeremy Evans Mar 20, 2023
Today we had the opportunity to sit down with Jeremy Evans. He is an avid outdoorsman, family man and author. Growing up in Alberta he fell in love with the outdoors and dedicated most of his life to being in it - often times alone - deep in the backcountry. It was on one of those solo adventures in August of 2017 when he had what he describes as an “oh shit” moment when he witnessed a terrifying sight - a lone grizzly cub. Instinctually he knew mama was nearby, and he was right. Mauled Lessons Learned from A Grizzly Bear Attack details what happened next that forever changed Jeremy, but didn’t stop him.

134: Dirtbags of Dope Lake. Yosemite National Park. Mar 13, 2023
There’s something special about a good old fashioned treasure hunt that never grows old, no matter when the story took place or who was involved. From finding veins of gold in Alaska to buried loot in the desert, striking it rich in this way is a fantasy. But sometimes, fantasy becomes reality, and it changes everything. When treasure in the form of 6,000 pounds of high-grade Mexican marijuana fell from the California sky during a plane crash in the winter of 1976, lives were changed and lives were lost – and legend was carved into the soul of Yosemite National Park.

But rest assured, we have made progress, especially when we reflect back on the horrific stories that unfolded within Gettysburg National Military Park.

127: Bruno of Borneo. Gunung Mulu National Park. Part 1. Feb 06, 2023
Home is where the heart is. This phrase that is scrawled across on wooden sign boards and hung in countless houses across the world may be cliche, but it’s true. Bruno Manser may have been born in Switzerland, but his heart was in Borneo. A place where he fell in love with the jungle and the people in it. It was paradise, but it was in peril. The home Bruno found was in serious danger. A home he was willing to fight for the death to protect.

123: A Strand in the Web. Torngat Mountains National Park. Jan 16, 2023
“Whatever happens to the beasts also happens to man. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the children of the earth.” Those words spoken by Chief Seattle centuries ago merely echoed what his people knew for a time immemorable, and what modern science is now proving – we are not separate from the environment, we are of it. Our actions, or inactions, have long lasting ripple effects on everything around us, and while we may not see the results in our lifetimes, they are becoming apparent in places like the Arctic, where the consequences of our actions are rearing their heads in a fight for survival.

*Please note, this episode includes descriptions of domestic violence and an active shooting*
I wish I had your job! If you’ve ever heard that and cringed – chances are people have a skewed idea of what you actually do. No one knows this to be more true that NPS LE Rangers. Yes, they are employed in some of the most beautiful places on Earth - but they also hold some of the most dangerous jobs in the world, and are often not recognized for it. When an active shooter enters Mount Rainier National Park on New Years day 2012, Margaret Anderson would pay the ultimate sacrifice to keep the people and the place she loved the most, safe.

People put a big emphasis on living - how we spend our precious time before we face the music. But unfortunately, part of living – is dying, and that takes some thought too. Today we venture into Joshua Tree National Park, and discuss the wild ride that was Gram Parson’s life, and untimely death.

110: Lone Survivor. Yosemite National Park. Nov 14, 2022
We all hope to get through life unscathed. No one wants to experience a traumatic event, as they inevitably come hand in hand with suffering. It may be immediate, or, it may take a lifetime, but according to studies on PTSD and trauma – an overwhelming amount of people who will experience a traumatic event in their lifetimes, were changed in fundamental, positive, ways. Donnie Priest was just 10 years old when the plane carrying his family crashed just outside of Yosemite National Park, killing all on board except for him. His incredible story of survival was only the beginning - it was what he went on to do with his life that would up being the true inspiration.

Rumors. We’ve all heard one, spread one or have been directly involved in one. More often than not, by the time these tall tales reach your ears – whatever story your hearing is muddled. Murky and questionable details lie in layers, coating whatever grain of truth there may be at the center, and finding that grain can be difficult. Today we return to Death Valley National Park to investigate legends and tall tales in a search for that grain of truth, because more often than not, where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

91: Surviving the Jungle. Lorentz National Park. Aug 15, 2022
In 1945 a sightseeing tour plane carrying American military personnel crashed into the western New Guinea jungle. The survivors spent the next several weeks trying to survive the harsh elements in a land that they knew very little about. They weren't alone though, they had landed right in the middle of indigenous tribal territory, people who they knew to be cannibalistic and violent. In this struggle for survival, they'll have to open their hearts and minds to people who are foreign to them if they want to make it out alive.

Today we are headed to the mountains of Rwanda for part one of our two-part series on the story of Dian Fossey. Her unorthodox and sometimes volatile “active conservation” methods undoubtedly saved the mountain gorillas, but ultimately may have led to her demise. Her love for the animals and passion for conservation changed the tides for the future of the species – never underestimate the change one person can enact.

Louis Hastings wanted to get away from the fast life of California and into a place where he felt more at peace in nature. When Louis begins to disagree with the way the state of Alaska is handling the lands though, he goes on a murder spree.

This week we head back to the 1800s in the wild wild west. We follow Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch gang – the most prolific bank and train robbers in outlaw history. Butch Cassidy created an extremely organized group of outlaws who spent their time fleeing authorities on horseback into the most remote areas of Utah, taking sums of money that would be worth millions today.

79: People of the Parks - Kathryn Miles Jun 13, 2022
In May of 1996, Lollie Winans and Julie Williams headed to Shenandoah National Park on a backpacking trip. They were two avid outdoor women who were in love and celebrating their relationship, new jobs, and moving in together. Several days into their trip they went missing and eventually park rangers found that they had been brutally murdered. To this day the case has still not been solved and investigations have slowed down, until now. In this episode we speak to investigative journalist Kathryn Miles. Kathryn recently published her newest book, Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. She spent the past several years personally investigating this case discovering police cover ups, negligence in their investigations, lost records, and evidence that was never properly investigated. Today, she tells us about the evidence she has found, the likelihood of this cold case being solved, and how this horrific event has rocked the outdoor community.

Join us this week as we head into the Australian Outback. In 2006 Ricky Megee was offered a job on the opposite side of the country. He accepted and packed his bags for a 55 hour road trip to begin his new adventures. When he comes across a group of men broken down on the side of the road, inside Australia's most desolate countryside, he stops to help them. These men aren't broken down though and shortly after, he wakes up buried alive hundreds of miles from any civilization, in one of the most unrelenting deserts on the planet.

75: The Bone Collector. Effigy Mounds National Monument. May 09, 2022
National Parks, as most places do, have rules. And for good reason. It is expected as visitors that we abide by them, and it is also expected that Park Rangers not only uphold them themselves, but enforce them. But what happens when they don’t? What happens when those whose objective is to preserve, protect and enhance - turn their back on those very commitments? Today we venture to Iowa, to Effigy Mounds National Monument – a place rich with cultural history. This monument is famous for its hundreds of burial mounds and notorious for a scandal that disrupted those who were laid to rest within them.

Grab your lifejacket, a paddle, and your best dry-bag because this week we're heading to different countries throughout Africa to explore some of the best whitewater rapids in the world. We follow the extraordinary life of Hendrik Coetzee, an avid outdoorsman who finds his true love and passion on the white waters. Not only are these some of the best rapids in the world, they're also some of the most dangerous, and are filled with aggressive hippos and man-eating crocodiles. During his journey he experiences extreme challenges, faces cannibalistic tribes, has huge adrenaline rushes, parties hard, and falls in love. 72: A Martyr and a Murder. Everglades National Park. Apr 25, 2022
In the late 1800's feathers were a huge fashion craze, to have them on your clothing was a signal of wealth and importance. To obtain these feathers, plume hunters decimated the fragile ecosystem and wading birds of the Everglades. The devastation caused an uproar and a call for conservation efforts to be put into place. Guy Bradley happily accepted the position as Game Warden and wildlife protector of the Everglades. He believed in the cause, and was willing to give his life for it. After his murder, the world finally took notice on what he was fighting so hard to protect.

70: The Trailside Killer. Point Reyes National Seashore. Apr 18, 2022
We turn to nature for so many reasons. To find peace, seek answers, to heal and more. It’s amazing what a simple walk in the woods can do for the soul and thus, why so many of us trek out into the wild in search of our own slice of magic. But not every person found in the forest is searching for the same. Some turn to nature not for magic, but to search for victims. Today we discuss the crimes of The Trailside Killer, who terrorized the trails and claimed the lives of at least 10 people in National and State Parks of northern California.

The relationship humans have with animals stretches back thousands of years. Animals provide us joy and companionship, can be the source of sadness or elicit fear. They can be our closest friends or our fiercest enemies, but out of all the species we share our planet with, there is one that evokes a greater range of human emotion than any other. An animal who has divided us and also unified us. Join us on another journey to Danielle’s favorite park, Yellowstone, where she shares the story of the American Wolf.

Here lies an abandon ghost town, where people were forced to vacate. Now all that is left are their homes and businesses, boarded up and abandon. Who doesn’t love a good legend? Stories of vanished civilizations, ancient beasts and long-lost gold sink their hooks into us and leaving us wanting more.Legends that allude to things that are lost are exciting because they suggest at one point, they must have been discovered … and could quite possibly be found once again.
This week we are back in Canada, in one of the most beautiful and least visited National Parks in North America to discuss some of the many legends it holds. Is there any truth to them? And who has died trying to find out?

58: The Graveyard of the Pacific. Pacific Rim National Park Reserve Feb 14, 2022
Have you ever wondered why some trails are created? In Pacific Rim National Park Reserve on the coast of Vancouver Island, is the West Coast Trail. A beautiful trail that attracts backpackers from all over the world every single year. It is full of lush greenery, beaches, and exciting wildlife. It's the perfect place to escape to for an adventure.
But this trail wasn't created for backpackers. It was created for a different reason, to rescue survivors of shipwrecks off the coast. Here lives some of the most dangerous waters in the Pacific Ocean. In 1906 one of the most devastating shipwrecks happened. Due to bad weather conditions and mistakes in navigation, it crashed onto a reef, just out of reach of land. Passengers and crew members did everything they could to try to get to safety but the violent waves fought them every step of the way. Onlookers had no way to reach them to help, and stood by helplessly as people died.

56: Dying for the Cause. Yosemite National Park Feb 07, 2022
In today’s episode we head back to Yosemite to have a debate. National Parks were created “for the benefit and enjoyment of the people”, but what happens when that enjoyment is restricted? BASE jumping is the most dangerous sport in the world, but that doesn’t stop people from wanting to pursue it. National Parks are some of the best (and safest) places to enjoy the sport, but it’s illegal. Today we talk about the history of the sport, the reasons the NPS have prohibited it and those who have such a passion for it - they'll fight to the death for the right to participate in it.

55: She Who Shapes the Sacred Land. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Jan 31, 2022
Grab your sunscreen, cameras and hiking shoes, this week we are heading to the incredibly diverse and magical landscapes of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. As we walk into these rainforests and barren volcanic landscapes, you can feel the mana, spiritual power, that lives here. Pele, the most revered goddess of Hawaiian Mythology, is to thank for the creation of these little islands. She has the power to destroy them and to create life. She is the spirit behind the two most active volcanoes in the entire world. Rumors have spread saying that to steal from the island is to steal from Pele and will make you cursed for many years. When people start experiencing bad luck, thousands of letters of apologies returning stolen rocks make their way to the park service. Is this curse real? Or is it actually more harmful than helpful?

53: The Daring Escape of Ellen and William Craft. Boston African American National Historic Site. Jan 17, 2022
This week we are traveling back in time to the 1800s. Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and we are taking a deep dive into one story in black history. We follow Freedom Seekers Ellen and William Craft on their 1,000 mile journey to the north. After being enslaved their entire lives, they decide to risk everything to find freedom and create a life they always wanted.
It's not an easy journey, as Ellen disguises herself as a white male and William's enslaver. They face many challenges and people who would go to extreme lengths to make sure they never escape.
The National Park Service not only preserves our wild landscapes and wildlife, but it also preserves history. The Boston African American National Historic Site preserves an important part of theirs.

    52: The Man-Made Man-Eater. Jim Corbett National Park. Jan 10, 2022
This week we cover the story of the Champawat tiger, the most deadly animal on record. In this week's episode Danielle tells us the tragic tale of this tiger, the lives she claimed and how it all began. A morbid story no doubt, but there is so much more to it than that. Underneath its terrifying outer skin, this story has layers of discussion regarding the repercussions of irresponsible wild land management, a sobering history of hunting in India and consequences of our collective actions - but with a twist. Jim Corbett was the Champawat's deadliest adversary, but eventually, he stood as her fiercest protector. Learn how Jim Corbett National Park came to be, and what we can do to be better stewards of our planet and those who share it with us through one of the most tragic stories in history.

51: Surviving the Worst Weather on the Planet. White Mountain National Forest. Jan 03, 2022
This week we are heading back to our home state of New Hampshire. This little state is full of big surprises as it is known for the worst weather on the entire planet. We dive into our knowledge of New Hampshire and the White Mountains (and add in some local tips for your visit) as we head to the slopes of Mount Washington. In January of 1982 two teenage climbers headed out to ice climb and summit but a horrible storm rolled in bringing snow, 140 mph winds and negative temperatures. 50: Exile Island. Kalaupapa National Historic Site. Dec 27, 2021
For the last episode of 2021, we are headed to the Hawaiian island of Molokai, home to one of the most remote peninsulas in the world. For over a century, thousands of people suffering from ma'i ho'oka'awale, or the “separating sickness” were ripped from their families and forced to the Kalaupapa peninsula, doomed to spend their lives in exile. The dark history of this National Park Historic Site is lightened by the resilience of the native Hawaiian people, their enduring spirit and their efforts to protect and preserve this sacred place.

49: Island of Death. New River Gorge National Park. Dec 20, 2021
In this week's episode we head to New River Gorge National Park, the newest National Park in America. At face value, this new and beautiful park is full of fun activities and beautiful landscapes. But, if you dive deeper and really take a look at the smaller, less known areas, there are very dark stories that reside here. On an island called Red Ash Island, a place many visitors just pass right by without a second thought, lies a graveyard of over 200 people and their stories. This week we're taking a bigger look at old forgotten ruins and traveling way back in history to learn about what they once were.

45: The Dingo Did It. Ulru Kata-Tjuta National Park Nov 22, 2021
“A dingoes got my baby!”. You may have heard this phrase in a parody in pop culture over the years. But do you know the tragic true story behind it?
!Warning! This story contains content relating to the death of an infant.
Forty-one years ago, the Chamberlain family went on Holiday to the Australian outback. But on their second night, their idyllic getaway turned to tragedy when their young child was taken in the night from their tent. What ensued was a modern-day Australian witch hunt, one in which a mother was vilified – and painted by the media as a monster who was desperate to cover up a horrendous crime. For thirty years Lindy Chamberlain and her family stood firmly in their account of what happened on August 17th, 1980, maintaining their innocence for thirty years – maintaining that their hands were clean … because the dingo did it.

44: Escaping the Flames. Idaho Panhandle National Forests. Nov 15, 2021
In the summer of 1910, the United States saw the worst fire in history. It burned over 3 million acres of the Rocky Mountain ranges and it killed over 80 people. Join us as we uncover how these days unfolded and the chaos that ensued before organizations like smokejumpers and hotshot crews were created.
In this episode we follow Ed Pulaski, an assistant ranger for the U.S forest service, as he tries to save his fellow firefighters when they get caught in the midst of the flames. He will go to any means necessary to get them out alive, even if that meant turning a gun on his own crew.

43: Reclaiming The Rock. Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Nov 08, 2021
Alcatraz Island is synonymous with prison. Almost every book, TV show and movie portrays this rocky island in San Francisco Bay as a place where big name gangsters like Al Capone or Alvin Karpis were locked away. But what you may not know is that this same location renowned for violence and incarceration also served as a beacon of peace and symbol of regaining freedom. After hundreds of years of people avoiding it and risking bullets in their backs to escape it, there was time that people risked it all to gain access to the island, and who repeatedly returned despite being forcibly removed. This week we welcome Native Heritage Month by learning about The Occupation of Alcatraz.

In this segment, we will be having conversations with people who are involved with the NPS. Rangers, paramedics, historians, those who work in conservation, etc. As we have gotten deeper into research for the show, our love and appreciation for those who dedicate their time, expertise and passion to the park system as grown deeper as well.
For our first guest, we spoke with Kevin Grange. He is a wilderness first responder who has spent seasons in Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Yosemite. His newest book Wild Rescues gives an in depth and intimate look into some of the calls he has responded to within the parks, and does an amazing job of underlining his love and appreciation of these wild places.

Places in our world that you can unknowingly walk straight into, and never return from.
This week we visit Yosemite National Park’s Tenaya Canyon, where an alleged curse is to blame for deaths and mishaps, Vermont’s Green Mountain National Forest where a string of disappearances left locals dumb founded, and to Alaska’s final frontier – to the triangle responsible for over 16,000 lost souls.

38: The Woman, The Myth, The Legend. Six Rivers National Forest. Oct 11, 2021
When someone mentions “Bigfoot”, a mental image pops into your mind, and we can take a pretty good guess on which one it is. A large, dark ape walking on two legs, head turned and arms swinging mid stride. You think of this particular snapshot because it’s everywhere. This iconic image is donned on apparel, signs, magazine covers and more. But do you know where it came from?
This week we travel to northern California and into Six Rivers National Forest to learn how this immortalized image was captured, what happened in the aftermath, and how it changed the world of cryptozoology. Listen along as we debate the likelihood of this infamous creature existing, or not. Is it hiding out in the wildest corners of the world? Or does it exist only in the imagination of believers? We will give you the information from both sides of the Bigfoot fence, but it’s up to you to decide … do you believe?

33: Presumed Dead. Kings Canyon National Park. Sep 06, 2021
Have you ever wondered what it was like to witness your own death? Your friends, siblings, parents – even your wife – have moved on. Accepted you as dead. There may have not been a body – but you went missing, deep in the Sierra Nevadas. But what if you survived? After weeks on end, alone and on the brink of starvation – you make it, returning home as a hero. Only to find the world you left behind is much different. Then, the same arms that welcomed you home as a hero push you away, and question your entire story. This nightmare was very real for Lieutenant David Steeves, who went missing in Kings Canyon National Park, returned from the grave and had his miraculous story of survival doubted – for the rest of his life.

This week we are abroad... again! With so many National Parks around the world, we can’t help but venture to far off lands. Someone else who had that urge, was Cody Roman Dial. The son of a National Geographic explorer and field biologist, Cody (who preferred to go by his middle name, Roman) followed right in his father’s footsteps. His own travels brought him all over the world, on extraordinary adventures most of us could only dream of. His final adventure brought him to Costa Rica, where he walked into the jungle for the last time. Come along with us as we learn about Roman’s life, disappearance, and the lengths his family went to find out what happened to their son.

To celebrate National Indigenous History Month, we take a step back in history as Danielle flips back the pages of time and brings us to a dark chapter in US history. National Parks, some of our favorite places in the world, were once home to thousands of Native Peoples. Today we are familiar with why National Parks were created – to protect land and resources from development, and "for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", but do we really know how they were created? The lands we benefit from and enjoy today came at the expense of others, others who lived and worshiped on those same lands for millennia. Lands that were stolen.
