In today’s technological society, it is not uncommon for both criminals and victims to have social media accounts. Many victims who were active on social media made posts right up to the time they disappeared or were murdered. Today’s cases involve missing persons who posted on social media right before their disappearance or death. These posts have become potential crucial evidence in their cases, as they provide insight into their state of mind and actions prior to their disappearance.

Modern technology plays a large role in solving today's crimes. GPS devices can aide in searching for missing people. Cellphone records and phone pings can help pinpoint a missing person's last location or help identify a murder suspect. However, technology can also add a layer of eeriness to certain cases, especially those cases that remain unsolved. Today we will discuss unsolved mysteries in which phone calls were made or received--either to 911 or from a person close to the mystery. They have led to more confusion than answers in most cases.

Unfortunately, there are a number of cases in which a woman is murdered by a partner while pregnant with their child. Many of these murders are believed to be motivated by the man’s lack of desire to be a father. Murdered while pregnant. This week on Mysteriously Listed.

38,000 missing person reports are made to Australian police each year. Three in five of those reports relate to a young person under the age of 18. Whilst most come home, there are still many families still waiting for their return. Those likely to go missing, with a rate six times higher then the general population, are youth aged between the ages of 13 and 17. For further information of missing persons in Australia, please visit The National Missing Persons Coordination facebook page or missingpersons.gov.au.

It is always frightening when a person vanishes. And law enforcement always look at the circumstances surrounding the disappearance in their investigation. There are quite a few cases where someone disappears while under the influence. Heck. It sparked a whole urban legend in the Smiley Face Killer. Alcohol slows downs the brain, leading to not only to the body’s delayed responses but also more risky behaviours. A dangerous combination. A person who goes missing under the influence of alcohol makes them more vulnerable to potential predators and less aware of potential surrounding dangers. Despite all of this, many of these cases do not always get the attention they deserve because of the stigma of addiction and the idea that the person may be just out partying.

Each year about 35000 people are reported missing in Australia. That’s one person every 15 minutes. More then 95% are located within a week. But some like the cases we discussed the next two episodes. They remain missing for decades. 14 women vanished in the Hunter region of New South Wales in the late 1970s and 1980s. Several of these women were believed to have been murdered by Ivan Milat, the Backpacker Killer. He is still considered a prime suspect in many of the cases we will discuss the next two episodes because they fit his MO and he worked in the area at the time. We may never know since Milat died in 2019 taking his secrets with him to his grave.
