    Finding the groove in the life with Otis Williams Oct 11, 2021

    Musician Otis Williams joins us on the podcast today! Otis Williams is a professional drummer born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He started playing at the tender age of 2 and began playing every Sunday at his local church at 9. Along his musical journey as a teenager, he was given opportunities to play drums on various local gospel recordings. He became one of Toronto's premier gospel session drummers working with local recording artists such as Brian Hamilton & Divine Worship, Sharon Riley & Faith Chorale, Londa Larmond, Toronto Mass Choir, Dave Brown, Eddie Bullen, Divine Brown, Kardinal Offishall, and more. Otis was also afforded the opportunity to perform with International gospel artists such as Donnie McClurkin, Martha Munizzi, Kim Burrell, Tasha Cobbs, Travis Greene, Israel Houghton, and Elevation Worship. He has also toured with Canadian pop artist Francesco Yates as musical director and drummer for Justin Timberlake's "Man of the Woods" tour. The guys connect with Otis over the internet and chat about his unique entry into music and how he could carve out a career that led him to Elevation—a great conversation with a fantastic gentleman.

    Musical Therapy Revisited with SarahRose Black Sep 20, 2021

    Our friend of the show, Dr. SarahRose Black, came into the studio again to continue the discussion of musical therapy from episode 17! SarahRose holds a Master of Arts in Music Education and a Master of Music Therapy. She recently completed her doctorate at the University of Toronto, where she conducted the first study on music therapy in the context of medical assistance in dying. Dr. SarahRose Black is also an accredited music therapist and registered psychotherapist specializing in palliative care and psychosocial oncology at both the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Kensington Hospice here in Toronto. Not to mention she is also a great pianist, vocalist, and violinist! In this episode we chat about how we use music as therapy unintentionally, Dr. SarahRose explains some of the ways she incorporates music into her therapy and she also shares some updates since the last time we chatted.

Since 2003, Jared has built an incredibly successful e-learning business that focuses on teaching drums through its social learning community called Drumeo. Born in Toronto to Greek parents, Pavlo has made a name for himself by offering a musical amalgam he calls “Mediterranean music” – a blend of Greek, flamenco, Latin, and even Balkan flavours, wrapped in contemporary pop. His music has taken him all around the world; along the way, he’s performed for royalty like Prince Charles and worked or toured with artists such as Jon Secada, Olivia Newton-John, and The Tenors. In this conversation, Pavlo shares his early beginnings in Toronto’s Greek community, the secret to his success, and how he’s dared to do what he loves and the drive to do it well.

She is best known for her role in the film Young American Gangstas, and she was a backup vocalist with Stevie Wonder. More recently, Dejah has committed to using her talents for healing by becoming a spiritual counselor and teacher through music medicine. She has founded KIRTI PREET KAUR, which offers guidance and counseling in a safe space for healing through diverse modalities such as Kundalini yoga, meditation, and much more.     In a continuation of episode 13, we sit down with the founder of the Canadian Synesthesia Association Greg Jarvis. Greg is a Toronto-born musician and composer best know for his work leading the rock group the Flowers of Hell. He's also worked at major labels in the early 1990's such as BMG in Toronto, Prague, and Moscow, and later for Universal in London. He is currently a professor at Durham College's Media, Art, & Design School where he teaches about music history and the music industry.
