    The taste of music (synesthesia) Oct 16, 2023

    We discussed the perceptual phenomenon known as synesthesia. Synesthesia is a neurological condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway (ie. hearing) leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway (such as vision). Sometimes, this takes the form of hearing music and simultaneously sensing the sound as swirls or patterns of colour. In this episode, we chat with two musicians, Brigit O'Regan and Blake Hamilton, who are both synesthetes (A person who reports a lifelong history of synesthesia) to learn more about this fascinating subject.     Canadian musician, songwriter, producer, AND dentist Alan Shiner joined us for today's episode. Alan Shiner has collaborated onstage and in the studio with legendary musicians like Mariah Carey, Drake, Ne-Yo, Baby Face, The Pointer Sisters, Boz Scaggs, Anne Murray, Harry Belafonte, and even George Burns & The Smothers Brothers in Toronto, New York, Nashville, London, Miami, and Los Angeles. For over four decades, he has written and performed keyboards on numerous Top 40 tunes. Alan is the founder and CEO of TOYHOUSE MEDIA CREATIONS. He has written several iconic jingles for companies like "967-11-11" (Pizza Pizza), "Everyone Loves Marineland," "African Lion Safari," "Sleep Country Canada," "Sunwing.CA," "Signature Vacations," "Sleeman's," and "Coca-Cola." In this episode, Alan shares with us his early beginnings with his band, THE NOVA SOUNDS, how some of the iconic jingles came to pass, and many more incredible stories.

    Our guests for today's episode are Dr. SarahRose Black and Dr. Andrew Ascenzo. Dr. SarahRose is a certified music therapist and registered Psychotherapist at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Kensington Health (Hospice) in Toronto, Ontario, currently specializing in music-centered psychotherapy in cancer care with palliative, hematology, general acute inpatient populations, and long-term care. Dr. Andrew is a cellist, conductor, teacher, composer, and musical director. He has designed a new concert genre along with Dr. SarahRose, combining live performance with narratives of the power of music in health and well-being. Their current project, "Pulse: Stories from the Frontlines of Music and Medicine," will occur at 918 Bathurst on September 14th, 2023, at 7:30 pm. Today, we connect with Dr SarahRose and discover what great things she has been up to since our last conversation.     We are excited to speak with singer-songwriter and author Tara Shannon in today's episode. Tara's journey defied expectations when she returned to the music scene as a woman in her forties and immediately established a following locally, nationally, and globally. She splits her time between Nashville and Ottawa with the goal to empower and inspire the other musicians on the label she founded, Willow Sound Records. In her music business education with The Syndicut, another entity she founded to help educate music creators and encourage them to see themselves as entrepreneurs. Her experiences in teaching workshops inspired her to write the book titled, "You and the Music Business, A Self-Care Guide to Finding Balance and Joy in Today’s Music Industry" to empower other independent artists who find themselves on a similar path.
