Earlier this year we started a little mini-series on avoiding burnout thanks to feedback we are hearing as part of ACDA’s Advocacy and Collaboration Standing Committee. The goal of these episodes is to provide our members and listeners with tools to avoid and overcome burnout - one of the leading causes to folks leaving our fabulous career.

Part one, we talked about how to guard your time throughout different stages of your career. We continue that conversation in this episode, part two of two, where you’ll hear from Dr. Stephanie Robertson. We talk about the many tools and resources you can employ to manage your mental health - can’t wait to see which technique or tool you end up using to power through the fall!

Stephanie Robertson, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of the Child Center for Wellbeing at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. She has worked in public schools, non-profit institutions, and higher education for over fifteen years, with a focus on the wellbeing and healthy development of children. She researches the impact of invisible disabilities and student access to education at secondary and post-secondary levels. Her husband, Troy Robertson, PhD, is the Director of Choirs at Tarleton. He conducts Tarleton’s five choral ensembles, teaches conducting and choral methods, and supervises clinical teachers. He is also a composer whose works are published with Hinshaw Music, Santa Barbara Music Press, Colla Voce, and Music Spoke. They make their home in Stephenville with their ten-year-old son, Winton.

Let’s explore exactly what goes into developing a new Broadway music with producer (and Tony voter) Cristina Maria Vivenzio!

If you haven’t heard, there’s a new book musical hitting the Broadway mainstream mid March and we can’t wait! The preview tracks have been epic! In this episode we talk all things from the classic novel, The Outsiders and how it’s being adapted to what’s destined for an award winning musical!

Cristina Marie Vivenzio (Producer) is currently the Vice President of Production and Development at The Araca Group and a Co-Producer on their Broadway musical, The Outsiders. Prior to her time at The Araca Group, Cristina worked at the producing office, National Artists Management Company, during the opening of their Tony Award-winning production of Pippin before joining the theatre owner, Jujamcyn Theaters, as the Executive Department Director working directly with all senior leadership and the Creative Operations Department. While at Jujamcyn, she was the Production Coordinator for the annual August Wilson Monologue Competition, a nation-wide high school event that culminates on the Broadway stage and filmed for Netflix in the documentary, Giving Voice. Cristina is also credited as an Associate Producer on the Netflix capture of the Broadway show, Diana The Musical, filmed during the height of the pandemic while maintaining strict Covid production protocols. Cristina is a proud alumni of the Broadway League’s Rising Stars Fellowship, the Commercial Theater Institutes Producing Intensive and the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond’s Community Organizing Workshop. Cristina is a graduate of New York University, Tisch School of the Arts.

Currently serving as Chief of Staff at the Clayton Christensen Institute for Disruptive Innovation, Ruth previously spent nearly two decades in the arts sector as an opera singer, choral director, and music educator.

Drawing on 23 years of experience in the cultural and nonprofit sectors, including six years’ immersion in innovation frameworks, Ruth helps arts organizations rethink audience development and arts marketing through a customer-centric lens.

Her perspective as a relevance strategist has been shaped by her unique journey: growing up in blue-collar Maine, convincing teenagers to love choral music, training and performing as an opera singer, engaging with donors and opera patrons, and supporting the research of a Harvard Business School professor.

This diverse range of experience provides Ruth with a distinctly empathetic and inclusive viewpoint, enabling her to connect with and advocate for a wide range of stakeholders in the arts industry.

Let’s talk choir culture! Consultant, author, and educator Allison Russo has dedicated her career to creating more ethical and effective arts learning spaces. She has a BM from Ithaca College and an MM from Boston University, both in Music Education. As an elementary band teacher and non-profit arts leader, Allison has designed and delivered music programming to thousands of students and teachers. She has presented at state and regional conferences, colleges, and public schools on topics including ethical classroom culture, trauma-informed care, and gender equity in jazz education.

Allison founded The Critical Good, an arts education consultancy in 2021, where she facilitates the creation of ground-up and equity-focused strategic plans for the arts departments of schools and nonprofits. She is also a graduate course facilitator for the Longy School of Music at Bard College, a collaborator with consulting firm WolfBrown, and freelance grant writer. She envisions a world where arts education is boundless, universally accessible, and joyful for all.

Meet Erik Jacobs, a choir director at Willard Middle School in Aldie, VA where he co-directs the Wildcat Chorus program which has over 400 singers in six different choirs. Prior to his current position, Jacobs was the choir director at J. Michael Lunsford Middle School in South Riding, VA. Both schools have been designated Blue Ribbon Schools of Musical Excellence consecutively by the Virginia Music Educator’s Association. Before his work in Loudoun County, Jacobs began his choral teaching career in Prince William County. Prior to becoming a choral music educator, Jacobs was an active touring musician, releasing two albums and touring with two of his own music projects: the Po’Boys Brass Band and ROC City Stompers.

Episode 166: Episode 166 - Kevin Boushel: Championing Irish Choral Music (and more!) Jul 11, 2023

Kevin Boushel is a conductor and music educator based in Dublin, Ireland. He is the Chamber Choir Director and a Government of Ireland Scholar at Dublin City University where he is pursuing a PhD under the supervision of Dr Barbara Dignam. In 2022 he was appointed Associate Conductor of the University College Dublin School of Music where he works with the UCD Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic Choir. Kevin has delivered music programmes to students of all ages and abilities, from kindergarten to adult education. As a conductor, he has worked with collegiate ensembles, workplace choirs, community choirs, children’s groups, and semi-professional ensembles. He has presented his research at the national conferences of the American Choral Directors' Association, the Society for Music Theory, and the Society for Musicology in Ireland. Kevin is also a fluent Irish-language speaker and language rights activist. He served on the executive board of the Gaelic League in Ireland, and hosted a weekend show on choral music on Dublin's Irish-language radio station.

In this episode we talk about Irish choral music and culture, multi-culuralism, muli-lingualism, coalition-building, and even anti-racist action. Lots to learn, hear, and implement. Can’t wait to hear what you think!

Let’s talk about successful teaching strategies for choir, starting with teaching rhythm (especially compound meter), running through solfège (especially minor scales), and other practical teaching tricks and tips from veteran teacher and author, Eric Wilkinson!

Eric Wilkinson is the director of the Wando High School Choir in Charleston, South Carolina, and is co-author of "Habits of a Successful Choir Director" as well as “Habits of a Successful Choral Musician” both published by GIA Publications. Wilkinson's choirs performed at the ACDA Southern Division Convention in 2014 and they have also performed solo concerts in Carnegie Hall, St. Peter's Basilica, the Washington National Cathedral, and Pearl Harbor. Under his direction, the Wando Choirs have premiered new choral works by Ēriks Ešenvalds, Michael John Trotta, and David Brunner. Mr. Wilkinson is a nationally Board Certified Teacher and was awarded the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award in 2007.

What do space, the International Space Station, rockets, and recorders have in common? You’re about to find out as this episode features music and STEAM education pioneer, Laurie Orth. While we talk about how space and music education collided in her world, we also explore how you too can “get it together,” learn new things, and ultimately do cool things, such as how Mrs. Orth brings together the contrasting disciplines of space exploration and music.

Laurie Orth is passionate about creating a pipeline for young people into STEAM through music. She is an independent contractor at the Jessye Norman School of the Arts in Augusta, Georgia. In 2019, she published Rocket Recorder, an innovative music workbook that introduces space content to young people. Rocket Recorder is certified by the Space Foundation’s Space Certification for Education™ program. She has presented her space-themed music curriculum for professional development to educators internationally. Ms. Orth serves as a Space Station Ambassador for the International Space Station National Lab, is a Space Foundation Teacher Liaison, and she volunteers with the Air & Space Forces Association. She was selected as a social media influencer by NASA. She is the soprano section leader for the Chancel Choir and the Junior Choir Director at St. John United Methodist Church in Augusta, GA. She sings professionally and is a member of the Georgia Music Educators Association and the National Association for Music Educators.

In this conversation, we talk about positively impacting the lives of people who have developmental disabilities (children, teens, and adults), Alzheimer's/Dementia, and drug/alcohol addiction through individual and group music sessions/lessons/performances with Founder/CEO of Key of Awesome Music, Jim Gaven. He has been in the human services field for the past 12 years creating and implementing a comprehensive music program for those with developmental disabilities (children, teens, and adults), Alzheimer's/Dementia, drug/alcohol addiction through individual and group music sessions/lessons/performances.

Armed with the goal of helping others, singer/songwriter, publisher, and author Jim Gaven’s mission is to use the power of music to make you think of a good time in your life, make you feel good about yourself, and most of all, put a smile on your face. Quoted as saying, ‘I want to inspire you to do great things as I have been inspired. The fact that you can create something out of nothing and have it last forever is amazing to me.’ This is a true testament to the everlasting impact we can all have on each other, and Jim hopes to bring that kind of attitude to the forefront through his musical endeavors.

He is a husband and father, and has won Employee of the Year at the Arc Mercer as well as Song of the Year (Kindred Awards) and received a Gold Record for his work in writing personalized songs for children who have terminal illnesses.

Meet loop pedal violist, composer, and educator Kathryn Patricia Cobbler. Hailing from Canada’s Capital region, Cobbler has crafted a singular niche in improvisation and classical performance. She obsesses over creating uniquely arresting soundscapes, whether in solo recitals, composing for theatre, performing at art installations, and more.

For Cobbler, “performing music is painting with sound.” Her goal, especially in her variety of interactive concerts and workshops, is to “inspire audiences to be able to dive into their own life stories and explore the realm of creativity.”

In this episode, we talk about the role of the Arts in the classroom, how experiencing music as a class/school/community spaces helps to grow empathy and community connection, tips for working on your improvisatory skills, and ultimately how to craftily use the lens of storytelling in your space.

Vocal pedagogy - the study of the art (and science) of voice teaching - can sound a bit intimidating, but not in this episode! Get your note-taking tools ready - this episode is jammed full of tips, tools, ideas, techniques, and terminology that you can immediately implement with your singers (and use to educate your community and build value). Using these ideas, you will help your singers find their most confident, capable, and technically sound expression of their vocal instrument - and have a lot of fun in the process.

Meet our guest, Vietnamese-American conductor Francis Cathlina, D.M.A. Dr. Cathlina serves as Director of Choral Activities at the University of Memphis. He guides a comprehensive Choral Program of five ensembles through administrative leadership and vision; he leads the doctoral and master’s choral conducting program and mentors undergraduate students, and he conducts the University Singers (flagship SATB choir) and Mazi (SSAA choir). Dr. Cathlina’s work with choral ensembles has garnered national recognition at the university and high school levels. His scholarship surrounding vocal pedagogy has been published in ACDA’s Choral Journal. Dr. Cathlina holds a D.M.A. in choral conducting with a vocal pedagogy cognate from the University of North Texas, an M.M. in choral conducting from Michigan State University, and a B.M.E. from Baylor University. Prior to his doctoral studies, he enjoyed a diverse career as a public school teacher in Texas.

Maybe you're a pre-service teacher interested in knowing what it's like to transition from student teaching or college life into your first job. Meet 1st-year teacher, Kyle Feather who is allowing us to chronicle his adventures in year one. Mr. Feather serves as the assistant director of choirs at Denton High School in Denton, Texas. He is a recent graduate of the University of North Texas, majoring in Music Education and Vocal Performance. In addition to his time spent teaching Kyle works as a musical theater director as a part of the music ministry of TheChurchKC, conducts the adult choir at Faith United Presbyterian Church, and sings in pro-choirs across the DFW metroplex and around Kansas City. His personal mission and why for teaching is “To engage minds, open eyes, and lift spirits through the power of music.”

Whether you’re a young musician thinking about careers in music, an educator looking to enhance your space with music therapy, a potential candidate for the benefits of music therapy, or just interested in listening to an inspiring story, this episode features Kourtney Tigner, the board-certified music therapist for Hospice Savannah. Kourtney received her master's degree in music with an emphasis in music therapy from Texas Woman's University (2019) and her bachelor's degree in music from the University of Montevallo (2014). She is currently pursuing the certificate of Hospice and Palliative Care Music Therapy (HPMT) from the Center for Music Therapy in End of Life Care. Kourtney finds her passion in providing comfort and compassion to those facing end-of-life issues and their families through music.

In this episode, we talk about her journey to music therapy, defining the job, what it looks like, and how everyone can benefit from this field.

James Berry currently works as the Director of Fine Arts at Hilton Head Christian Academy. Originally from Portland, Maine, and a graduate from Gordon College and Boise State University, Mr. Berry has 15+ years of music education experience and is the co-founder and camp director of the Hilton Head Jazz Camp, which attracts a world-class 20 full-time faculty and 110 aspiring jazz students from across the country every July.

Jasmine Edwards (she/her/hers) is a creative arts therapy coordinator working as a music therapist within a pediatric medical setting in New York City. Jasmine holds a Bachelor of Music in music therapy from Florida State University and a Master of Arts in music therapy from New York University. She has experience working in private practice, outpatient, school-based, and medical settings, and is trained in NICU-MT, First Sounds: Rhythm, Breath, Lullaby, and Austin Vocal Psychotherapy. Jasmine has a vested interest in integrating the tenets of cultural humility into music therapy clinical practice and pedagogy. She also has served as an adjunct faculty member at Howard University, New York University, Nazareth College, and Montclair State University.

In this episode, we cover Ms Edward’s story into Music Therapy along with the importance of being a creative arts therapist, considerations of a Black therapist, and her research area of cultural humility in clinic practice and pedagogy.

A live recording from the ACDA National Retreat for Children’s and Youth Community Choir Directors - this past weekend in Tuscan, AZ. Alex Gartner and I presented our first session with concepts directly from our upcoming book. The session was called: Communicating Your Value: Car Sales, Choirs, and Everything in Between.

Every octavo is different, yet as music specialists, we have the tools we need to teach each song with ease - we know all the tricks to teach musical concepts and create a beautiful sound. Yet, when it comes to building support for these same choirs, sometimes our bag of tricks doesn’t run as deep. Because most of our degrees are in music, donning a business-like mindset in order to build support for our organizations can feel daunting. In this session, we step out of the classroom and into the community with confidence by exploring how to communicate your organization’s value to attract new supporters.
