Story 93: It’s Always Sunny in Alfheim (w/ Elliot from The Demigod Pod) Oct 22, 2024

Show notes

“That’s quite the glow up.”
It’s a brand new guest! Elliot (any) from The Demigod Pod joins the show to expound on their observations about the gnomes in Medusa’s garden. What better time to do so than in an episode about dwarves and elves in Norse mythology?
Other topics include tricky homophones, some sweet dwarven crafts, casual homicide, the differences (if any) between dwarves and dark elves, Alfheim being uncomfortably Antebellum, pondering the art of turning eyes into jewels, whether Medusa could permanently petrify a dwarf, and more Lord of the Rings/Hobbit inspirations than you can shake a cursed ring at.

Story 90: Freyja is Pretty! She Has Cats! w/ Kelsey Dody Aug 13, 2024

Show notes

“You know what she could have been? A goddamn valkyrie!”
Special guest Kelsey Dody “escapes” from Bunker 9 to join the show on the main feed to discuss the divine twins! No, the other divine twins: Freyr and Freyja!
Other topics include the struggle to pronounce symbols not used in American English, Freyr being down so bad he rejects traditional social decorum, another Rick Riordan OC (Do Not Steal), the conflicting identity of Freyr/Surt’s sword, the crime of Magnus being denied a teacup boar, and Rick Riordan’s baffling decision to base his Freyja off a smear campaign written by 14th-century Christian priests.
Spoilers for SMITE, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, God of War (2018), Marvel Comics, and Valheim
Content Warning: This episode contains mentions of and conversations about death, sex, incest, coercion, colonization, and misogyny.

Story 89: The Case of the Disappearing Vanir Jul 30, 2024

Show notes

“We can’t use this kind of metal in our weapons!”
Even the Norse scholars accuse Snorri of making things up! In this episode, Darien (she/her) and DJ (he/him) ask if that is the case when it comes to the Vanir and their home, Vanaheimr.
Other topics include the strange timeline of Nine from the 9 Worlds, whether or not Snorri made up the idea of Vanaheimr, an excellent observation from Carter over at Seaweed Brain Podcast, Thor throwing the harshest, most needless burn at a poetic dwarf, how the Aesir HATE gold, whether or not Snorri made up the idea of the Vanir, a depressing reflection on how an immeasurable number of ancient beliefs were intentionally wiped from human memory, theorizing what the Folkvangr warriors were doing during Ragnarok, a surprisingly amicable Norse divorce, and questioning why all the Norse wikis seem to prefer an incest storyline for no apparent reason.
Content Warning: This episode contains mentions of and conversations about death, murder, impalement, religious zealotry, colonization, incest, and eye injuries.

Story 88: Surt’s Flaming Raging Poisoning(?) Sword of Doom Jul 18, 2024

Show notes

“He’s just Father from Codename: Kids Next Door!”
Darien (she/her) and DJ (he/him) present the perfect episode for a mid-summer heatwave: Muspelheim, land of lava and fire.
Other topics include the narrative choice to not include the book one villain in book three, origins of the universe, another examination into why stating that “Snorri made it up” fails to grasp the nuisance of oral traditions and evolving cultural mythologies, the importance of choosing translations with care, Surt’s impeccable fashion sense, a poetic description for the thing that ruins branches, and Surt’s theoretical Icelandic volcano demon origins.
Spoilers for Codename: Kids Next Door, SMITE, God of War (2018), Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Thor Dark World, Thor Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends
Content Warning: This episode contains mentions of and conversations about death, maiming, implied animal euthanasia, the afterlife, and murder.

Story 87: Baldr’s MistleFOE Jul 02, 2024

Show notes

“Loki is—I’m assuming—an insecure, jealous dick.”
This week, Darien (she/her) and DJ (he/him) discuss how Baldr, the greatest guy ever, kicked the bucket because Loki just couldn’t deal with not being the center of attention for five minutes.
Other topics include finally being able to read comments from Spotify listeners, Baldr being the god of ????, Loki being a insecure, jealous dick, the oversimplification of stating that Snorri “made it up,” legal ramifications regarding the age of mistletoe, addressing “Norse Jesus” allegations, and an unexpected but passionate defense of Padmé Amidala in the face of “died from a broken heart” slander.
Spoilers for God of War (2018), Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Baldur’s Gate, Witches of East End, and Marvel Comics lore

Story 86: We Go to Hel Jun 18, 2024

Show notes

“Snorri’s out here gatekeeping the real Norse mythology.”
Time to take a journey to Hel, which isn't too far from Midgard! That's fortunate since the dead have to arrange their own transportation.

Other topics include actually having the soul of the protagonist's mother before trying to make a deal, Darien leaving the recording not once but twice, directions to Hel, extrapolating cultural meaning from the differences in how souls arrive in the afterlife, Snorri doing his own thing (again), the conflicting requirements for a soul being sent to Hel, how Hel and Hades became Hell, and whether or not the Norse people actual had a goddess with the same name as their icy afterlife.
Spoilers for Thor: Dark World, SMITE, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, Thor: Ragnarok, Angela Queen of Hel, Journey into Mystery, Marvel: What If…?, Doom Eternal, Warrior Cats, and Adventure Time: Together Again
Content Warning: This episode contains mentions of and conversations about death, the afterlife, murder, and suicide
