Welcome to The Daily Inch. While I’m away researching Murder Mile, here’s a little treat to keep you entertained over the next three weeks. Fifteen little stories which are fun, rambly, informative, but not essential to listen to. Each story had been written and presented in a tongue-in-cheek way and are not for the easily offended. Murder Mile returns on Thursday 3rd of November 2022, but until then, there’s this.

#188 - The Bearded Man - Part Two (Paddington, London, UK) Oct 06, 2022
    Show notes

This is Part Two of Two of The Bearded Man.

At 12:45am on Saturday 14th January 1956, Ruby a local sex-worker was dropped off at this spot by her husband and pimp called Ernest. In his own words, “it was the last time I saw her alive”, as when he returned to their flat at 32 Westbourne Terrace, Ruby had been hatchetted to death in their bed.

As the police’s prime suspect, Ernest would lay the blame for her murder on a mysterious man he had neither seen, met and had only heard about from his dead wife in passing. Unable to provide a single shred of evidence that this suspect even existed, his only description was that he was ‘a bearded man’. But was this the truth, a lie, or a shaky alibi?

    • Date: Saturday 14th January 1956 at 12:45am (last seen alive)
    • Location: Flat 7, 32 Westbourne Terrace. Paddington, London, W2
    • Victims: 1 (Rosina Bolton/Pattinson, known as Ruby)
    • Culprits: 1 (Leonard Vincent Atter? Ernest Bolton?)

#187 - The Bearded Man - Part One (Paddington, London, UK) Sep 29, 2022
    Show notes

This is Part One of Two of The Bearded Man.

12:45am on Saturday 14th January 1956, at the junction of Hertford Street and Park Lane in Mayfair, 34-year-old sex-worker Robina Bolton known as Ruby was last seen alive. The next morning she was found murdered in Flat 7 at 32 Westbourne Terrace, a flat she shared with her husband Ernest.

Ernest would claim he last saw Ruby alive as she entered a taxi with an unidentified man. Seven hours later, he would stumble across the body of his wife having been brutally murdered in her bed.

As her pimp who was flat broke, the only other person with a key to the flat and a laughable alibi that she was due to meet a man no-one had seen who he knew only as ‘the bearded man’, as the Police’s chief suspect, Ernest was questioned on suspicion of her murder. But was this the truth, or a lie?

Friday 31st July 1863. Wealthy merchant Frederick Chappell owned a small flat in a townhouse on the Marylebone Road. On the second floor, he secretly ensconced 24-year-old Emily Mitchell. Once his maid, now his pregnant mistress, she lived the life of a lady… but she could never be treated as his wife, as she was not of the right class. With the baby, due to be born in secret, even though its conception was as much his fault as it was hers, living in a world dominated by men, the impending child would be seen as her sin… not his… and therefore death would come to Salisbury mansions.

In the summer of 1958, the occupant of Room 622 in the Strand Palace Hotel was Bernard Smith; a kind and decent man who was quiet and respectable. Running a successful furniture business in New York, he doted on his two sisters, his niece and he would do anything for them, and likewise for him.

With his health declining, having discussed his retirement with his sisters, Bernard had sold up, left America and moved to the UK to be nearer his family – it is what families do, they support one another.

At 12:15pm on Tuesday 3rd June 1958, Lila Gilman (Bernard’s sister) was in Room 622 helping him with a simple task. Last seen entering his room, moments later, he would brutally beat his sister to death.
