Episode 176 - Showcase Theory: Card Stock Selection, Display, and Case Layout Mar 20, 2022
    Show notes

In the past we've discussed what kind of stock we bring to various Magic Fests, Pre-Releases, and other local events where we had cases but didn't dive into the whys behind this. Combined with an increase on both number of, and access to more "variety" events in TCG-Con, more localized Sci-Fi and Fantasy shows, and now everyone has access to events that require you to branch out and cover more games and verticals at your booth to make sure you capture as wide an audience as possible. We discuss the practices we follow when making selections about stock for events that are mainly Magic to TCG-Con, to Anime Shows and large scale events like PAX to help get you ready and ensure you have the best stock possible.

Episode 175 - Alta Fox - Deep Diving the Proposal pt. 2 Mar 14, 2022
    Show notes

In week two of the deep dive into the Alta Fox proposal, we look at the purchases for products and IPs that Hasbro has made, allocation of WotC funds and resource for non-WotC IP related products and one of the more subtle but damming elements; how the board is paid out and handles their stock. We cover the following pages this week: 58-63, 64, 71, 74, 76-79, 83 https://www.altafoxcapital.com/ https://freethewizards.com/ https://freethewizards.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Alta-Fox-HAS-Presentation-Final.pdf https://investor.hasbro.com/static-files/8dc080cb-70e3-4a4d-b351-658e9bafe783 https://freethewizards.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Alta-Fox-QA-Letter-vF.pdf

Episode 174 - Alta Fox - Deep Diving the Proposal pt. 1 Mar 07, 2022
    Show notes

Last week we discussed, from the vendor perspective what we thought about the Alta Fox announcement and how it might impact Hasbro, WotC, and Magic the Gathering on the whole. Were their ideas flawed or were they grounded? In our first deep dive episode we take a deep dive into the PDF (linked below) that covers the entirety of the proposal. We discuss the data, ideas, comparisons, and quotes and what they mean to Hasbro moving forward. We cover the following pages this week: 9, 13, 14, 21, 22, 31, 37, 41, and 51-53. https://www.altafoxcapital.com/ https://freethewizards.com/ https://freethewizards.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Alta-Fox-HAS-Presentation-Final.pdf https://investor.hasbro.com/static-files/8dc080cb-70e3-4a4d-b351-658e9bafe783

Episode 173 - Alta Fox - Free the Wizards Discussion: A High Level Overview Feb 28, 2022
    Show notes

In the last few weeks, Alta Fox has come forth as majority shareholder in Hasbro to ask for foundational changes within the organization. Looking to add their hand picked members to the Hasbro board, Alto Fox is seeking to increase their returns. Below that, however, is an astounding amount of data discussing the overall mishandling of brands, including Wizards of the Coast and calls to action to attempt to "right the ship" and let WotC just be WotC. And as vendors, we cast a critical eye at their announcement and proposal as even if they are unsuccessful, their presentation and data can't be ignored. This means that there could be a call by shareholders for Hasbro to open up, let WotC run free, and greatly impact the game and vendor landscape. https://www.altafoxcapital.com/ https://freethewizards.com/ https://freethewizards.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Alta-Fox-HAS-Presentation-Final.pdf

Episode 172 - Kamigawa Two: Cyberpunk Boogaloo, A Financial Trend Review Feb 21, 2022
    Show notes

As we did with Kaldheim, we take a look at the full spoiler for Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty for cards that we think have room to grow, are priced properly, or are currently priced well above what we expect. Utilizing our combined knowledge and experience, we make parallels to cards and effects we seen before to draw our conclusion and Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty offered up a lot of interesting cards but in the end we boiled it down to three each.

Episode 171 - How Coverage Changed Finance Feb 14, 2022
    Show notes

For almost as long as we've been able to play Magic the Gathering, we've had coverage in one form or another. Be it print, video playback, or live streams, we've been able to digest information about the game almost from day one. We discuss what we feel are the "eras" in coverage that mark how we interacted with high level play and set financial "standards", the coverage outlets, and the financial landscape at the time. Join us this week as we take a trip down memory lane and discuss Magic the Gathering coverage and its link to the financial side of the game from day one forward. PT 1997 aired on ESPN2 in 2010: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/magic-espn2-years-ago-2010-12-07 Full list of MtG events that aired on ESPN: https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/ESPN

Episode 170 - The Fall of the Foreign Singles Market Feb 07, 2022
    Show notes

In the "stone age" of Magic OP, foreign cards and foreign foils could command a premium over their local equivalent. The reason behind this, generally boiled down to accessibility and scarcity driving demand. As production ramps up across the globe, new supplemental products are released, box toppers, and intra-set art variations there are a lot of competing options for the coveted spot of "best version". So what knocked foreign cards off the pedestal?

Episode 169 - How the Recent PayPal Changes Impact MtG Finance Jan 31, 2022
    Show notes

In November 2021, PayPal announced that changes in to the upcoming U.S. tax reporting requirements, "could impact the information PayPal shares with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) about transactions made using PayPal and Venmo for the sale of goods and services." As open marketplaces like Facebook rely on PayPal as a "backbone" for payments, this has immediate impact for vendors of all sizes and thus means that there is an additional layer of diligence that now needs to be taken by those looking to sell directly to players and collectors. We discuss this impact, what a 1099 form means, how to handle the upcoming changes, and what steps you can take to mitigate your 1099 taxation. https://newsroom.paypal-corp.com/2021-11-04-New-US-Tax-Reporting-Requirements-Your-Questions-Answered

Episode 168 - Will Alchemy Impact Standard and Standard Card Sales? Jan 24, 2022
    Show notes

With Alchemy taking center stage on Arena, pulling content creators and players alike, what kind of impact will this have on the Standard format on the whole? We break this conversation down into two sections after some discussion as we believe that there are a number of ways in which Alchemy and Standard could be at odds and we wanted to discuss both the play aspect as well as the financial aspect. Who thinks that Alchemy will pull focus from Standard and eventually kill it and who believes that Standard prices won't budge an inch? Find out on this episode.

    Episode 167 - What if We Ran Hasbro pt2 Jan 17, 2022
    Show notes

Taking a cue from, "The Bronx Pinstripes Show" we are going to role play what each of us would do if we were in charge of the organization. It could be anything from personnel to marketing to supply chain and beyond, but we run the show. Broken out into two parts as to force ourselves to stay focused on the task at hand and not get too far off topic, we will be discussing in turn our ideas on necessary changes and improvements. It was a tall ask sitting silently and letting one another discuss without chiming in but we managed to get there with this brand new segment. This week we discuss organizational level changes.
