________________
Let's talk about DEI! As a Black leader working in a diversity, equity, and inclusion role in higher education I find myself in a consistent posture of pushing up against the walls of status quo and structural whiteness. Utilizing the works found in this book further assists leaders like me in understanding the ways institutional policies and practices continue marginalization. This book is a resource, and since DEI has taken on a new energy, I think it is important to share some resources with you that I find to be informative and illuminating.

Racial Innocence x Tanya Hernandez

•
Genre: Education
Published: 23 August 2022 (Beacon Press)
Length: 216 pages; 4hours 5 mins

•
•
Synopsis
Racial Innocence will challenge what you thought about racism and bias and demonstrate that it’s possible for a historically marginalized group to experience discrimination and also be discriminatory. Racism is deeply complex, and law professor and comparative race relations expert Tanya Katerí Hernández exposes “the Latino racial innocence cloak” that often veils Latino complicity in racism. As Latinos are the second-largest ethnic group in the US, this revelation is critical to dismantling systemic racism. Basing her work on interviews, discrimination case files, and civil rights law, Hernández reveals Latino anti-Black bias in the workplace, the housing market, schools, places of recreation, the criminal justice system, and Latino families.

Bet On Black x Eboni K. Williams
Genre: Memoir/ Self-Help
Published: 31 January 2023
Length: 256 pages; 6 hours 7mins
Synopsis
Journalist, attorney, and star of Bravo's The Real Housewives of New York reshape the cultural landscape of achievement by showing why Black unity is crucial to individual and collective success.
Eboni K. Williams knew that an important part of her mission as a media personality would be to unabashedly place Blackness on a pedestal. Williams has long known that Blackness is a rich, expansive place that centers on resilience, excellence, beauty, panache, and brilliance. But these notions of Blackness have long been distorted by American racism, where for generations Black folks have been expected to live a subordinate, second-class existence in the country they call home.

Finding Me x Viola Davis

Genre: Autobiography

Length: 291 pages; 9 hours
•

•
Synopsis
Finding Me: A Memoir (2022) is a New York Times bestselling memoir by actor Viola Davis, encapsulating her journey of growing up in poverty in Rhode Island and overcoming the trauma of her circumstances to find global success and fame. Davis is a celebrated actor with numerous awards and accolades to her name. At the time her memoir was published, she was the only African American to have won the Triple Crown of Acting: a Tony, an Emmy, and an Oscar. Through the retelling of her own experiences and the insights she has drawn from them, Davis touches upon themes of the interrelation between poverty, race, and trauma; the long and arduous process of coming to terms with one’s identity in the face of marginalization and discrimination; and the heavy hand that luck, chance, and privilege play in the glitzy world of Hollywood.
