Podcast 514: AMA Hall of Famer Bubba Shobert Mar 20, 2023

This week on our motorcycle podcast we are talking about cooking food. With our bikes. No, really. Our moto is Live to Ride, Ride to Eat, so what better way to do this than to cook the food while you ride. We've come up with a list of bikes and dishes that we think are good matches. are you willing to try any? Next up we are joined by champion racer Bubba Shobert. He's a three-time A.M.A. Grand National Champion from 1985 to 1987 and was AMA Superbike Champion in 1988 while riding for American Honda. In 1989 Shobert moved up to the Grand Prix world championship riding for Honda. Unfortunately, Shobert's Grand Prix career was cut short at the third race of the season, where he was involved in a terrible crash with Kevin Magee on the cool off lap after the race, wherein Shobert drove into the back of Magee's motorcycle. Magee had stopped his motorcycle in the middle of the track and was performing a rear-wheel "burnout". Eddie Lawson narrowly missed hitting Magee's bike after he and Shobert had just finished congratulating each other moments earlier and were not looking forward. Shobert suffered severe head injuries but was able to make a full recovery after months of rehabilitation. He never raced again, taking instead roles as manager in some teams of AMA Grand National dirt track . With Liza, Stumpy John, Miss Emma and Bagel. They are both veterans of the Iron Butt rallies and long distance riding, but that wasn't hard enough. They wanted the ultimate long distance riding challenge; visiting all of the United States in alphabetical order. Think about that. Here's just the first 5 in order: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California. And because Ian was on a tourist visa from Australia, they would only have a few months to complete it. With months of planning and preparation, what could go wrong? How about emergency surgery, hitting a kangaroo whilst on the first half of the trip in Australia, cracking a frame in half and lightning storms to name a few. They share their stories and tricks to keeping their older bikes running like tops, and how they managed to not give up. First up, there is a bill being pushed in Connecticut that says if you ride a motorcycle without a helmet and crash, then you automatically become an organ donor regardless of your wishes, religion or family. This can't be real, but in fact it is. Next up we talk about the electric motorcycles and e-bikes that have crossed the line and are faster than some of our smaller bikes, but fall through the cracks when it comes to licensing, registration and insurance. What is the solution? Then we talk about the announcement that California wants to ban chrome plating. What does this mean for the cruiser community? Who will it save and who will it hurt?
