July 21st: Diana Miller Killed (2006)

As parents, we know that at some point or another, we are going to have to bail our children out of some kind of trouble. For most, it’s something simple like a speeding ticket, or a much needed loan after poor spending. But, for some, like the Millers, their bailouts were for things like drugs, $7,000 worth of problems, and caring for her when a car accident left her disabled and back home. But they did it, because they loved her. And, on July 21st 2006, Diana Miller would bail her daughter out one last time and this time, it would cost her her life.

Gun control is a hot, and touchy, subject in our current climate. But, one thing I think everyone can agree on is that, if you do own a firearm, it should be properly stored and safe from children. On July 20th 2005 a 14 year old boy got a hold of his mom’s gun and a 9 year old friend would pay the consequences.

July 18th: Bandali Debs Born (1953)

When a criminal is sentenced for a crime, in some locations, their DNA is entered into the system. This is a valuable tool that can link them to unsolved crimes that, otherwise, they may never have been connected to. On July 18th 1953 a man was born who killed 2 Australian police officers. And, because his DNA was put into the system, he was able to be convicted for a totally unrelated crime, bringing closure to loved ones.

The Golden State Killer case put DNA and genetics in the spotlight not too long ago. This very new idea that, with companies like GEDMatch and the DNA Doe Project, we can find the identities of both killer and victim through a family tree of genetics. But, before there was the Golden State Killer case, there was the case of the Sheep Flats Jane Doe, whose body was found on June 17th 1982.

July 16th: Charles Ray Hatcher Born (1929)

An assailant’s mental health should always be considered during sentencing. It’s a sad fact that, in some cases, a person cannot control their actions and these mental illnesses can have deadly consequences. But, what about the people who take advantage of this consideration? On July 16th 1929 a man was born who would spend most of his life in and out of both prisons and mental facilities. Facilities that could not agree on if he was faking it, or if he truly was as mentally ill as he was claiming to be.
