A marriage should, at its core, be for love and companionship. At least, that’s what one would hope. On December 31st 1913 a woman died after spending time in prison for the crimes she committed against the men she convinced to marry her. Marriages that, likely, weren’t for love but for the massive insurance policies she was able to cash out on. And, those weren’t her only victims.

The argument of whether someone is competent to stand trial is one that, in some cases, has an outcome that is surprising to those involved. On December 30th 1994 a man committed a heinous crime that landed him in a courtroom who spent time debating his level of competency. A man who, if you believed the defense, had a long history of mental illness that led to a diagnosis or, if you believed the prosecution, knew exactly what he did when he pulled the trigger and absolutely knew right from wrong.
