From the 'penny tax' to the license plate tax, you'd think South Carolina's roads would be paved with gold by now. Join us as we welcome Lou Nespeca, who astutely elucidates that the 'penny tax' isn't just a penny, but 1% of your transaction, estimated to generate a vast $485 million over six years. Yet, our roads remain in a state of disrepair. It's high time we scrutinize where these funds are going, and why there's such a glaring gap between money collected, and work done on our roads.
The plot thickens as we blow the lid off the misused $25 road fee, originally meant for road repairs, but instead, ended up replacing funds from the general fund with no extra money going towards road paving. Lou also shines a light on the 12-cent increase on gasoline, instantaneously collected, but six and a half years down the line, resources for the necessary work are mysteriously missing. This episode is a deep-dive into the transparency, or lack thereof, of tax collection and its subsequent utilization in South Carolina.
