If you were making a film and one of your characters was a petulant manbaby who was obsessed with rules, spent half of the film in a costume store pretending to be Gandalf and could only become aroused by enforcing the rules of the local homeowners' association, you'd imagine that character would be the villain, right?

Well, welcome to the Hallmark Channel's Haul Out the Halloween, where not only is this character, Jared, not the villain, he is also the romantic lead and deuteragonist, alongside his wife Emily. Emily and Jared live on Evergreen Lane, known as the most festive street in America, on account of how they go all in on Christmas decorations every year. But while they love Christmas, Halloween is banned because Emily got scared by a scarecrow once 25 years ago, and then her grandma died of unrelated causes several weeks later. But with the arrival of new spooky neighbours, played by Marnie and Kalabar Jr. from Halloweentown, the residents of Evergreen Lane decide that it might be ok to put up some plastic pumpkins this year, and still manage to turn it into a stressful ordeal because these people can't do anything right. Anyway, listen on for one of the most baffling films we've ever watched on this podcast, and enjoy!

Girl vs. Monster Oct 13, 2025

It's spooky season folks, and we're hitting the ground running with 2012's Girl vs. Monster, an ooky, spooky, rip roaring romp about a girl who fights a lot of things that you could certainly describe as monsters if you were absolutely positive there would be no follow up questions.

The girl in question is Skylar, a regular teen with a medical lack of fear who in a fit of pique one Halloween decides to destroy all her parents' scientific equipment, and by extension their life's work. But unbeknownst to Skylar, it turns out her parents are actually monster hunters, and by destroying their equipment Skylar has unleashed all manner of evil spirits onto the town, as well as restored Skylar's sense of fear at the worst possible time. Will Skylar be able to conquer her fears and face the monsters? Will the Halloween party at the old McQuarry Mansion still go ahead? And does anyone want to buy some slightly used orbs? If the Disney Channel approached you and asked you to write a movie about mascots, but you didn't know anything about mascots, you would probably do one of two things:

1) Go away and learn about mascots, then write the movie.

2) Say "sorry, I don't know anything about mascots, I cannot write this movie".

However, there is a secret third option, and that is to write the movie anyway, despite not knowing what a mascot is, or what one does, or how people would react to it.

And friends, that's the option that we have to assume led to 2009's Hatching Pete, in which a boy named Pete inspires a basketball team, lifts the hearts of an entire town, and gets away with grand theft auto by doing normal mascotting in a normal way. But will people still love Pete when he isn't in a chicken suit? Can the Brewster Roosters finally win a game if there is a chicken breakdancing in their peripheral vision? Principal Takes a Holiday Sep 15, 2025

John Scaduto has a problem. If he can get through the school term without getting in trouble, he stands to get a $10,000 check from his grandma. Unfortunately, he has already set into motion an epic prank that will maim his headmaster and earn him up to one demerit on his permanent record. Max Keeble's Big Move Jun 09, 2025

Max Keeble has a lot of problems. His school's colourful bullies are out for his blood. An evil ice cream man wants to kill both him and skateboarding icon Tony Hawk. Imagine the situation: the Walt Disney company wants to turn your life story into a movie! It's a dream come true. That is, until the movie comes out, and you realise it's a crushingly boring series of basketball games and for some reason they've decided to name it "Double Teamed". You'd be livid.

Still, I suppose it has to feature some basketball, as Double Teamed tells the real life story of Heather and Heidi Burge, twin sisters and pioneers of the WNBA. But their rise to the top wasn't always smooth, if this film is to be believed, and they had to deal with among other things, not liking basketball, evil teammates, and since this is a DCOM, the world's worst dad.

Being a princess is hard work. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is a Disney ride in which you get in an elevator that flings you up and down for about a minute. As you can probably tell from that description, it's rich with narrative potential, which is why we have 1997's Tower of Terror movie starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst, the movie we're talking about today.

Guttenberg plays the improbably named Buzzy Crocker, a fraudulent journalist who is presented with the opportunity of a lifetime: head to the derelict Hollywood Tower Hotel to solve the mysterious disappearance of five people from the elevator on Halloween night, 1939. Will Buzzy be able to get to the bottom of what happened? Is the hotel haunted? And will his sister finally relent and let him take photos of his niece in an abandoned building? Listen and find out!

The film tells the story of Frances Bacon McCausland, a gifted teen who starts to be blamed for mysterious, mischievous happenings all over town. At first she suspects the improbably named Larry Houdini, a strange boy that only she can see, but it soon becomes clear that darker, more Boogeyman-related forces are at work, and Frances must team up with Larry to save her brother, and the town itself. Imagine being an only child when suddenly, your parents have quints, and your previously peaceful home life is shattered by five wild and wacky babies! That certainly sounds like a premise rich in comic potential, doesn't it?

Well too bad, this is a DCOM, so instead we get Quints (2000), a movie that barely features the quints of the title, but instead focuses on their older sister Jamie Grover (Kimberly J. Brown), who is neither wacky, nor a baby. How will Jamie cope with no longer being the centre of her parents' world? Is getting into George Washington Science Magnet School truly where her heart lies? Can we actually see the quints, though, please? The answers to these questions, and more, await!

The Luck of the Irish Mar 05, 2023

It's not clear at which point Kyle Johnson, protagonist of The Luck of the Irish (2001), is killed and the rest of the film is just the product of his neurons firing one last time, but it must be pretty early on because this is probably the most unhinged DCOM Andy and Luke have tackled so far.

The movie tells the age-old story of a basketball-loving boy who discovers he hails from a family of leprechauns and - uh oh - begins transforming into a leprechaun when his lucky coin is stolen. Andy and Luke grapple hopelessly with the most baffling DCOM plot yet, but not as hopelessly as this movie grapples with accents, or weighty themes such as heritage and the immigrant experience.
