    Modern Minorities

MODERN MINORITIES is about minority voices for ALL OUR majority ears. That’s right, solving racism with a podcast. Since 2019, we’ve been uncovering the stories, perspectives, and often unspoken truths about how all of us uniquely experience the world. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, the color of your skin, or who you love – this is a show about all of you, for all of us. Created by Raman Sehgal and Sharon Lee Thony, with lots of love and support from our many FrieMMds of the Pod – himom@modmypod.com

Matt Story hosts the podcast ‘What’s Your Story’ - where leaders of color talk about their experiences blazing new trails and share their secret origins. LULU GE Wants (You) to Talk to Your Parents Sep 02, 2020
    Show notes

Lulu Ge, is the Co-Founder & CEO of Elix, a wellness company focusing on Chinese medicine for women’s health - prior to which she’s worn some pretty big business hats across some of the world’s most beloved brands. Now based in NYC, Lulu holds a host of diverse degrees from the Wharton School, Columbia University, and UC San Diego - so it goes without saying that Lulu knows a thing or two about a thing or three.

In this continually escalating era of quarantine and social justice - Lulu was sheltering in-place with TWO sets of Asian parents. So naturally the conversation quickly turned to the conversations on race many of us find ourselves having across generations in our own families. Only by recognizing the place of privilege many of us sit in - because of the hardships our parents’ immigrant generation endured - can we even begin to have a discussion on the moment we are all coming to grips with...

FRANCISCO RAMOS Doesn’t Need an (American) Accent Aug 24, 2020
    Show notes

Francisco Ramos is an LA-based, nationally known, Venezuelan-born comic. We had a lot of fun comparing notes on the power of accents, relationships out of our race, and life in the suburbs (he moved to Maryland when was was 12). You’ve seen Francisco on the "Gentefied" (Netflix) and Shameless (Showtime), as well as on Last Comic Standing (top 10 finalist), Comedy Central (@midnight), Jimmy Kimmel Live. You’ve even HEARD Francisco in the animated film “Rio” (he was Marmoset), and Cartoon Network’s "Victor and Valentino." His HBO standup special “Entre Nos” is a must-watch, as are his numerous sketches in Lorne Michael’s “Mas Mejor.” But it’s not all jokes with Francisco - even though he doesn’t take himself too seriously...

KIM THAI Thinks You Need Some (Ganesh) Space Aug 17, 2020
    Show notes

Kim Thai is the founder of ganeshspace - which creates safe spaces for challenging conversations around our individual and collective wellbeing. She’s also an Emmy-award winning producer (TED, MTV, VH1) and writer (Fortune, USA Today, the AP)...but we mostly talked about where to find the best Vietnamese food (it’s not in Murray Hill). Born and raised in Houston, Kim’s the proud daughter of Vietnamese War refugees. In a ranging conversation about the push and pull of culture, acceptance, and love - we all agreed that the best food usually comes from the home.

MODERN Minorities - New Name, Same Conversations

“Model Minorities” is a provocative term - often used to create a wedge between racial groups. After all, if one minority is a model, what does that say about the others? This podcast is meant to be about conversations on work and life, told thru the lens of race and gender. As two Asian American hosts, we thought “Model Minorities” - while of negative origins - was a name we could take back, and turn on it’s head.

We were wrong. After some heavy conversations - with guests, friends, and strangers - it’s time for a new name.

We uncover the stories, perspectives and often unspoken truths about how people uniquely experience the world. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, the color of your skin, or who you love - we are no one’s Model Minority - but we are all MODERN Minorities

    Show notes

Melissa Haughton is a storyteller of Jamaican descent living in Toronto - where she also happens to work for the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Company). Yep, even Canada has Black people, and it ain’t all roses and maple leaves up there. Whether Melissa’s on or off the clock, you can’t deny the sense of wonder and curiosity she brings to shows like “So What Are You” (cultural heritage and identity - self produced), or “Hard to Stomach” (food insecurity across Ontario - CBC). Through a conversation about lunch tables, hair color, and hot sauce - we learn a lot more about the nebulousness of Canadian identity.
